Some cork influence on the nose with cedar qualities. Still, dark fruit is coming through. Graphite, mushrooms, soy sauce. Mouthwatering umami flavors. Makes me anxious to they some younger vintages i have on hand.

Good to open and enjoy now. Slipping away but still robust. Not the greatest vintage but this wine still had acid, depth, fruit, tannin. If you don’t like old Wine, pass on this. But if you do, there’s a lot to enjoy.

Dried out, tired, and slightly oxidized, an off bottle, for sure. A shame because the '84 Monticello is drinking splendidly right now. On another note, this possessed the most sediment I have ever seen in a bottle.

Memorial Day barbecue at my home with friends Not the same as the last bottle which surprised me at 31 years but this was still a great wine. Notable dusty fruit which was very restrained. Melancholy and balanced. Long lingering flavors of dark berries and graphite.

Let me start by saying that I love older wine. This one did not disappoint. It had a dark ruby color, and the most sediment I have seen in a wine as the bottle finished. The aromas were pure blackberry with a brandy-like twist to it. The wine had a velvety mouth-feel with a melancholy flavor. Sooooooo Smooth. The next day the wine got better and was more intense in flavor of course that is when I found the nearly …

A surprisingly fresh nose of bright red fruit with notes of macerated tomato and soy sauce. The palate is more pure, with vibrant blackberry and red cherry, this is a underripe style with good acidity.

Generously provided to our tasting group by D.B., this wine was tasted in double-blind fashion. Unfortunately, this particular bottle had no fruit and was clearly in severe decline.

1984 Napa Cabs/Blends (Mpls, MN) : Medium dark red color. PNP, decanted and drank 1 glass over 2 hours. The nose starts off with stewed red fruits, which gradually fades more into the background while a strong soy character emerges with some balsamic caramel, and later a very prominent celery note. The palate is still fairly nice with tart red fruit, tart cherry, citrus, soy, and balsamic, medium finish. Past peak, but enjoyable and interesting nonetheless. Palate exceeds the nose.

Opened to follow two 1970 Bordeauxs, this wine was a pleasant surprise. I didn't expect much from it, assuming it was likely gone by now. Black currant, dark cherries, plums, black licorice, cinnamon and leather on the nose. There is some fruit left on the palate, but quite tangy. Tannins are faded and the finish is short, but not a bad bottle of wine.

Allowed to breathe in glass for 30 minutes before tasting. Clear deep dark garnet red color. Nice bouquet of creme de cassis, blackberry liqueur, oak, bourbon, vanilla, graphite and cloves. Similar on the palate, full body with noticeable alcohol, medium finish.

Drank this bottle a few weeks ago. I was not expecting much from it, but was pleasantly surprised by the fruit that showed through - cassis, blackberry, dark cherry and some stewed fruit. Tart cherry and black fruit on the palate. If you have it, drink it up now.

Deep ruby color, long slow legs on the glass indicate a nice rich mouthfeel. I was very pleasantly surprised that this wine was nowhere near over the hill. Double decanted and drunk over 4 hours it evolved favorable throughout until none was left. The nose had cedar and more red fruit than black but some of both. It had chocolate and coffee and went fantastically well with grilled loin lamb chops with rosemary, really accentuating the lamb flavor. Unfortunately also …

What a difference a year (or two) makes. Twi years ago this was still showing a good nost with bing cherry and cigar box on the nose. I remember it opening nicely into a classic aged California 100% cab. Just dead now. Nice, if light, cherry color belies a dead soldier.

Welcoming Phil Franks to the OC (Phil Franks, Huntington Beach, CA) : Strong classic Cal Cab notes of cassis and cedar. Not much complexity but a ton of acidity without being tart. In a great place now if you like traditional classic Cabernet. A terrific wine to serve with dinner.

A little vegetal. Slight bricking and overall lightly colored. Nose and flavors are slightly muted now. Wasn't bad but wasn't great either.

With MPL and BLR at Singer & Foy survey of '84 cabs. Really opaque. Thick, rich. I'm not sure I like this. Smells stemmy. On the palate, it is much better. Very rich and concentrated. Earthy fruit. Controversial nose. Flavor was better. Should save this one. 5-6-16-7: 84/100.
