Black truffle, dirt, dust, tobacco, ash, ground nutmeg, ground cinnamon and mushrooms atop macerated red cherries on the nose. Almost completely tertiary; but thankfully free of the "soy sauce" aroma that I get on old Barolo that are over the hill. Medium + intensity of aromas. The palate is a lot better, though, of course, still very tertiary. It shows flavors of mushrooms, frankincense, cloves, nutmeg, blood and dust atop surprisingly ripe sour cherries and ripe raspberries. I mean, I …

Best bottle yet. Full of life at age 56 with Deepish color and body. Nose has classic Nebbiolo elements of leather, celery seed and rose. Palate impresses with mature fruit and still finely proportioned acidity. Again, there is a depth to the palate that works beautifully with the light/medium bodied weight. Impressive. (93)

Unfortunately this was my last 2008. Got better every time I opened one. Really needed the years in bottle. Ripe fruit, tannins perfectly integrated, bit of tar. Very classic.

One-hour decant through a screened and aerating funnel. Very fine sediment in the screen. Nose was mute during decant. Wine was clear; garnet bowl lightening to cranberry with a thin amber rim encircled by a thinner clear halo. After resting, nose was a joy to behold: leather, flowers, dark fruit and sandalwood. In the mouth: very smooth; very balanced and very elegant featuring dark fruits, baklava and garrigue. Extremely long finish of the same. Just dandy!

Still drinking beautifully with proper prep. I stood up in cellar for 3 weeks, then gently opened it with a Durand, carefully decanted it using flashlight to check sediment and leaving the bottom 1.5 inches or so, rinsed the bottle, decanted for 3 hours, back in bottle and then to restaurant. Color was beautiful and clear crimson, nose was fantastic. All the qualities of great aged Barolo.

A little past its glory days, this wine still had good presence. Subtle hints of fruit…like a ghost who hadn’t crossed over to the other side . Still strong body and overall structure… my bottle had a small note of VA.

Took an hour or so to blow off the mustiness. Notes of tar, black cherries, mushroom. The color was dark red with no bricking at all. Reconditioned? Anyway, solid showing.

This drinks great now, good acidity, tannins well integrated, forest floor, menthol notes, needs the bottle ageing.

Austin Auction BYOB Treasures: Rare Wines and Table Theft (Austin, TX) : Tasted at our table during the Austin Rare & Fine Wine Auction and Gala. Mostly scores because there was a ton of socializing and literally no time to write down detailed notes! This was a bit past peak but still very nice. Old Barolo nose and taste. Some fruit left. What a pleasure to try! Brad - heavypourwine.com

Barolo night at Oso : A proper treat courtesy of Pavel. Historic bottle and rarity. The nose has crazy VA and smells oxidized but the palate is holding it together somehow.

Exactly what a well aged Barolo should be--earthy yet floral, spicy and full of nuanced aromas and flavors. Great showing and this wine will probably hold up for another decade.

It is rare to enjoy a mature Barolo at its peak, this was one of those memorable experiences. Cork broke - poured through aerator. Medium garnet with brown hue, translucent and viscous @14% abv. Aromas of baked plum, fine leather,, prunes, lavash and wood notes. Dry, medium fresh(!) acidity, medium-medium(+) tannin which are fully integrated and of a surreal souplesse, medium alcohol and medium(*) body. Savory flavors continued on the palate with baked black fruit, licorice, umami, caramel. Intense yet …

Brought to an Italian wine tasting where PNP was the only option. Knew ahead of time that this was a coin flip but and at the very least would be interesting to try. Ah-so got the cork out in one piece and once the initial funk blew off, we were rewarded with a surprisingly robust amount of fruit. Absolutely delicious and tasted like it could go many many more years. Super fun to try.

Excellent condition cork. A bit harsh on PNP. 1.5 hours with the bottle open before pouring. Balanced and elegant for the age. Still showing fruit (though mostly stewed fruit). Charity Wine Tasting benefitting Brigid Collins Family Support Center : This was better than the 1970 Rioja GR, but still still a bit too faded. Decanted for about 7 hours. Translucent tawny with a little garnet color remaining. Mostly tertiary with some sweet fruit. Tannins nearly completely resolved, although one could find a trace of drying on the back of the teeth. A little cinnamon, cranberry, truffle. When paired with tagliolini with fresh perigord winter truffles, Parmigiano Reggiano and more …

Coming out of a deep sleep, this wine took over an hour of aeration to deliver the expected aromas of tar, roses and dried cherries. Masculine in style and serious, with a tannic backbone and ample acidty to pair well with beautiful Italian fare of beet and walnut salad, cacio y pepe pasta with poached egg, and seared rack of lamb with spinach/hazelnut saute. Will hold up for several more years, IMO.

I guessed right bank, with its Cherry notes, red fruits, but felt herbaceous and green too. Tannins not perfectly rounded. When told its a Italian, I thought Super Tuscan! Somehow I was only correct with the vintage, 2010, but alas that was about it... this one is a not so typical Barolo! Thanks to Doc SKT for his de rigueur pour in plain Livita bottles, it was a fun night with my partner in crime deciphering 3 Italians. We only …

Exciting experience to taste 65 years old Barolo which has lost its fruitiness, but is still enjoyable, impressive juice. Hazy, medium brick garnet colour, tawny hue. Medium shy aroma of old cupboard and cellar, rotten leaves, tree bark, liquorice and smoky hints. Medium body, rustic and elegant with smooth and lean texture, medium round acidity, flat tannins and bitterish finish.

Medium(-)-medium ruby, translucent, vibrant. Complex nose of red fruit, violets, dried wood and tar. Dry, medium-medium(+) acidity, supple medium(+) tannins, medium alcohol and medium(+) body. Palate, black cherry, red berry, with tobacco, licorice and leather notes emerging on the back palate. Great length, with lingering evolving palate and uplifting crunchy finish. Rock solid structure yet elegant and fresh. This evolvd in a delicious very food-friendly wine. Early in its drinking window. Amazing! Cellaring pays off, 2 bottles left.

I opened this for a dear friend who has served me more memorable bottles of Italian wine than anyone deserves to drink. Had no idea what to expect. An amber/ruby color suggested some life remaining. Loved the nose which showed truffle, mushroom, raw leather and mature fruit. The palate is holding up well. Certainly dominated by tertiary notes but alive no doubt. This was pretty fun for a 50+ year old wine. (92)

Pot pouree, tar, beef stock, woodsmoke, and roasted herbs on the nose. Dried strawberry, fresh raspberry, pomegranate on the attack, adding dark chocolate, dark roast coffee on the finish. Maybe like black grape skin, not the flesh. A salinity on the tip of the tongue. Still some tannin. My good friend provides the aged Italian reds and this is his best yet.

Stood up for seven days. Two hour slow oxidation followed by a two hour decent. Medium ruby fading to a pale garnet outer edge. A stunningly aromatic nose of melted tar, beef consommé, mushrooms, prunes, thyme, dried roses and violets. The palate is remarkably fresh and alive with dried red berries, cranberries, and boysenberry backed up by deeper more savoury notes of cracked vintage leather, espresso soaked prunes, and melted tar. A beautifully mature and layered Barolo with impressive length.

Light garnet with brick red shades. Clear. Aromas of iodine, raisins, almost port like nose. On the palate, fruit has faded as one might expect for a 50 year old bottle. While past its prime and well downhill on a gentle downslope, the condition of the wine is still good. On the palate, notes of soya sauce with dried prunes and some acidity. Tertiary flavors not that prominent. Intellectually interesting.

Slow oxygenation method for 5 hours to remove the musky smell. Tints of dried red fruits, mushroom, smoke, cedar. The wine is close to dead and miracle happens after 3-4 hours of oxygen. 1971 suppose to be an extraordinary vintage, probably it's due to the variation of the bottle.
