Domaine de la Vougeraie, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Les Mazoyeres

Bright red cherry and wild strawberry aromas rise from the glass, layered with forest-floor undergrowth and a touch of rustic leather from a hint of Brettanomyces. On the palate, brisk acidity and a pronounced mineral streak frame herb-spiced flavors, while persistent, slightly gripping tannins lend structure and youthful energy. Though the barnyard edge may divide purists, I find it adds an intriguing earthy counterpoint to the wine’s poised finish and aging potential.

Needed a few hours of air to open up and develop more complex nose and flavors. Noticeably Grand Cru caliber wine. Silky smooth. Had a really nice soy/brown sugar like sweetness that developed on the nose. Very enjoyable wine overall.

Some meaty reduction blows off with air. It has ripe dark fruits and a sweet creamy core. There are mossy/undergrowth things and some leather. It is nicely balanced and has good drive.

From Coravin by the glass list. Expressive nose of torrefaction, dark fruit, earthy aromas and oak. Lush palate with polished tannins. Modern, but in a good way.

4/6, excellent cork. Medium garnet core, pale garnet rim. Quite sweet dark fruit profile, soil, spice, touch of sesame seed. Medium/full bodied, rich and dark fruited, tannins a touch sandy but attractive, vibrant acidity, decent length finish. Now and for at least another 5 years, but difficult to see much in the way of upside.

The Grand Crus of Chambertin with Jasper Morris MW (Zoom!) : Tannins much different to straight Charmes - it's slightly cooler than its neighbour, as there's a col (that also cools Latricieres above), so the wines tend to be crunchier. This wine made from 50% whole bunch, and really old vines (1901). Very dark colour, and lots of power, with spice and dark flavours like chocolate, but there's still lift and freshness. Tasted blind. Nose of smoke, earthy notes with red and dark fruit. Complex, very complete palate and wine this is. It did however turn a touch oxidative after a few hours in the glass, so I would not decant this.

Weekly tasting group RWP #329; 5 flights of 3 wines (@ RW) : The bouquet shows red and dark berries, herbs and rustic flavors. On the palate juicy red and dark berries, beautiful acidity and oak. The wine develops for the better substantially in the glass. 91++

Medium garnet, on the dark colored side for a Burg. Expessive nose, very old vines and it shows. Aromas of more dark than red fruit with some subtle gamy, funky notes jump out of the glass and also leather, cranberry, toast. Wow. Multiple complex layers, in many ways more interesting than many Le Chambertin. Forest fruits, clear clean flavours. They superb structure, for what is a extremely powerful, classic burgundy. My only regretis that maybe I opened the bottle to early: five more to go.... Very like Echezeaux?

Good cork. Deep garnet core, pale garnet rim. Smoky, slightly closed nose at first. opening as it warms to sweeten and show more purity, mainly damson, black cherry, notes of vanilla and liquorice. Medium/full bodied on the palate, damsons, black cherry, touch of liquorice, quite generous but with perceptible, underlying firm tannins which become increasingly grainy on the medium/good length finish. A touch burly and inelegant, although better than the previous bottle.

Weekly tasting group #184; Pinot Noir Every flight a French, German and New World wine beside each other (@ RW) : Beautiful and expressive bouquet with earth, smoke, autumn forest and some pleasant barnyard. The same impressions come back on the palate, some herbs and spices an minerals as well, beautiful acidity and still sticky tannin. Beautiful and complex wine. Early maturity now. 91+ for tonight.

DRC Tasting Group (Cafe Veloce) : Tasted blind. Reduced. A bit more fruit than the 1996 Lamarche, but still a darker, denser wine. Rich, round body and fine tannins with great balance. Well integrated.

Ray Walker visits London (Chez Bruce, Wandsworth, London) : Fabulous start with a fine exotic red fruit and earth nose, frsh and tannic on the palate, but it tightened up considerably in the glass

Abundantly familiar with "barnyardy", I've never experienced it at this level - with immediate and distinct cow manure scents. Fortunately that blew off rather quickly; turning more towards the floral and roasted vegetables. Good mid-level acidity with a soft finish. A food wine, no doubt. It went perfectly with both our slow-roasted truffled chicken and lamb shank.

A bit tougher than the bottle we had last month, though the flavour profile of earth and red fruits was similar, the flavour was more restrained, which made the tannins more obvious - still damn good though.

1/6. Pale/medium garnet core, medium pale ruby rim. Rich, earthy, liqourice nose, plenty of oak still in evidence, some smoky red cherry fruit. Medium/full bodied on the palate, rich, intense and powerful, liquorice, smoky red cherries, crisp acidity contrasts well and finish is quite long but tannins are still very firm and this is very oak dominated at present. Similar to the 2000 a week earlier, but denser, with more bite and grip, this is still compelling with its earth, sap and red fruits, the oak nicely integrated - exciting wine. Similar to last note. This is a modern style wine, but is attractive. Purple, dense and heavy for a burg (at least for those who favor a more traditional style). No formal note. Tasted at Lay & Wheeler Burgundy tasting. Open, expressive nose, ripe, perfumed black fruits, earthy, spice and truffle notes starting to show. Black cherry and plum fruit on the palate, decent depth and purity, some chewy tannin on a good length, well balanced finish, surprisingly accesible now but will definitely improve. My WOTN, put in an order for 6!

AOC: A bit dull, med. light bod, a hint metallic IMHO, w/very subtle dried fruit--some said the t’s were too dry, and the wine a tad thin. Not GC status in my opinion, but nice, solid, a hint tart.
