Pours amber with intense aromatics of smoked peat, campho, toffee, shoe leather, caramelized apricot puree and smashed pecan. Silky on the tongue with a nice smoky lingering finish with a touch of spicy ginger. A delicate beast of a dram.

The original smoke powerhouse Still the most visceral response I've ever had to any spirit--the big campfire and bacon nose grabbed me right away and instantly convinced me 20+ years ago that I not only loved scotch, but had found one I could instantly cite if anyone asked whether I had a particular favorite. It's probably still my all-time favorite whisky. The smoke hits from arm's length, if not from across the room. The alcohol is quite subdued in comparison …

Delicious! Plenty of flavor without a strong alcohol kick.

Nose - bonfire, ocean air, seaweed. Palate - intense peat smoke, oily mouthfeel, anchovy, iodine, barley, pepper, ginger, faintly sweet. Finish - pepper, pipe tobacco.

I am writing this enjoying my last dram of a whole bottle I consumed over the past few months. My overall assessment remains the same as in my TN from 2016 below although the nose isn't so far ahead of the palate anymore. The notes contained in it would be the same regarding the nose, except for he addition of "halva" and a stressing of the iodine. But the intensity of it is not as I remember it, and so …

Nose: Wood chips, orange citrus, iodine, vanilla cream, almost an oily petrol kind of note. Palate: Peat and iodine, baking spices, almonds, charcoal. Fairly light and balanced.

Nose: Campfire smokiness, rice wine, apple, chlorine. Palate: Peaty, spiced fruit, ginger, compost, iodine. Finish: coals, graphite, peanut.

Highly refined. Great peat expression. Incredibly subtle and complex. Not too sweet. Reliable as always, and worth the price. The artificial coloring is unfortunate though (looks like a decades-old speyside).

Always reliable peatty but not overly so go to whisky. Old favourite.

Smells like iodine, peat and swamp. Just disgusting. Didnt bother drinking it, probably would have killed me

Happy World Whiskey Day. A classic and favorite for us. Light brownish yellow. Lovely peat on the nose with some tree fruit and tobacco. Well rounded and full bodied. Medium plus finish.

Happy World Whiskey Day. Very light in appearance with a hint of yellow. Baked fruits on the nose with a light toastiness and a bit of apricot. A bit of honey on the palate with a smooth medium finish.

W.A.N.K. (DP's place, Leichardt) : Seaside spray, iodine, smoked fishsimilar flavours in the mouth to the nose but a little lost after the cask strength whisky's that preceded it. Still very good though.

Amazing, tantalizing, a peaty done right. If not up and ready for this one, I find it best to follow a lighter Scotch, after your buds are broken in, make this the last few for the night. Normally straight up with a drop or 3 of water to help open, but this one I sometimes add an ice-cube, opens nicer and with a little chill really makes it smoother on the throat without taking anything away from the taste, take …

W.A.N.K. (Gary's place, Rosebery) : Sweet and savoury with smoked fish, seaweed, rich, slight touches of vanilla and nuts - I think this has been finished in sherry cask. I've not had this for a while and it stands up well in this line up despite being standard strength.

NOSE: smoke, new car smell leather and tar, peat and sea water, mulch and herbs PALETTE: smooth and smoky, leather hearth and pencil shavings, clean and refined, cedar and peat are strong but extremely well balanced! Very very very good Islay! Like a perfectly balanced barbecue chicken and brisket dinner with all the accoutrements on a mild summer night. FINISH: smoke and more peat follow through, but oh so smooth and savory. A little cinnamon on the aftertaste, but smooth, …

Nice, peaty. On the sweet side.
Taster #1075 · Jan 25, 2018
Peat water, bonfire, creamy fudge, iodine, burnt orange peel. Viscus, sweet but not quite honey, metalic note, bitter toffee, strangely short & light for a Lagavulin. Nose is better than mouth but still enjoyable.
Taster #2116 · Jan 13, 2018
green copper colour cakey notes, fruity with some smoke on the nose Smooth, sweet fruity notes, seems a bit underpowered Not quite as I remember it

From a purchased sample: Nose: Rich, golden, and decadent. Dense and complex. Most obviously sticky sweet (heavy molasses, honey, and oily toffee), without being over the top. The sherry influence gives off subtle tobacco and echoes of fruit. The peat emerges and recedes. At times it's like kippers and the most perfect sardines (canned and freshly smoked). Very slight sulfur, though, admittedly, I'm not sensitive to it. I don't want to put down my glass. Everything evolves and changes. The …

Wildly smokey and seashore misty nose which immediately has me thinking of a campfire on the the beach at night, with burning sage brush and fruits on top of the fire!. Very strong and needs some water to round it out, and becomes more fruity with more water.

Immensely powerful and almost forbidding; not as peaty, saline or raw as an equivalent Ardbeg but no less deep, a very pure and (almost) subtle and floral rendition of the Islay theme, an iron fist in an (almost) velvet glove; excellent length with very limited heat (considering). I very much prefer it to the somewhat commercial 16 YO and double matured versions.

(whiskies w Werns) 57.5% Light grassy green in the glass, with an INCREDIBLE nose of iodine disinfectant along with a rich explosion of seaweed, wood, tobacco smoke, soft peat, heather florals and lingering white flowers. Sweet, oily and viscous on the taste, showing yet more white flowers, old wood, anise seed and ginseng sweetness and mild salt-spray. Beautifully balanced, focused and complex and elegant. Mindblowing. Even more impressive upon watering, growing richer, blooming with yet more white flowers and light …

Recognizeable Lagavulin as the bottle is popped, but exceptional more refined. Absolutely a must-smell-twice bottle opening. Can this be true at only 21 yo? Enjoyed in official Glencairn Whisky Glass. Nose is again recognized as Lagavulin, an invite to test out perfection. Exceptional compared to the 16 yo, and perhaps even more open and sweet than the 25 yo (!). Meets you with well-known peated character, but also with lots of detailed stories along. Strongest story tells you that angels …
