Double decanted by Ken before tonight's tasting.....graphite, rich, perfumed, incense laden fruit. Resolved tannins and quite balanced at this age. Just a great wine, very confusing to the group. Herbal but not green.....Cab Franc-ish but not really. A very nice malbec and MY personal 2nd WOTN tied with the Calon....what I especially liked about it is at this age and stage is it wasn't a big pow(!), in your face green stemmy malbec. It has all the elements, but in …

Double decanted several hours prior to drinking. This showed big upfront deep ripe mulberry (blue and red) fruits in a hedonistic way that was quite good. Yet this came across somewhat one dimensional with little nuance or interesting spices. Holding fine, but suggest drinking up.

Deep purple color. Big chocolate, oak and dark fruits. Higher alcohol levels giving it a hit of heat. Some tart black cherry, nuttiness and ash in this dense wine. Reminds us more of a big CA Cabernet. The wine starts to show more dried fruits and become more flabby as it sits in the glass, so best to PNP and drink up. p.s. homemade Spanish style chicken soup and charcuterie board

Not a fan of malbec but old malbec brings me back to bordeaux in style. Very complex

Dark fruits and currant followed by a velevty texture with integrated, rich tannins and beautiful flavors including cassis and vanilla oak. Very inviting, unctuous wine - excited to see that this is still singing. Catena zapata is quite the power house. p.s. homemade pozole with mexican street corn...heaven

This wine still drinking well in 2019. PnP, great nose, good fruit with balanced tannins. Could probably go another 3+ years.

A testament to the quality when the basic blended Malbec ages so well and exceeds all expectations. Punches way above it's modest release price -crazy quality here for the $

Full throttled. THIS is S American Malbec. Purple and thick black fruit notes. Muddy. Compared to the other two SVD malbecs that I had from this year, I think this one outdid the others quite easily. Yet I feel that, even at 13 years post vintage this one is still developing and could probably go another five to seven years without really even thinking about it. Completely blown away.

Opened two bottles with a group last night. Absolutely fantastic with grilled New York steaks and rigatoni. It is at its peak and I do not think it will get better. The flavors and mouth feel were delicious.

Amazing Double decanted. fragrant dark berry aroma with a smooth almost blueberry on palate but silkiness of a merlot. Color and density make it seem like a 4 year old so you could hold this longer. Did not taste heavy or alcoholic but a couple of glasses nade me dleepy and gave a head ache

One of the best Malbecs I ever tasted. Big, bold, dark blackberry fruit with notes of leather, cassis and dark chocolate. Smooth tannins seamlessly integrate into the fruit...creating a smooth finish after a two hour decant...which you absolutely must do. Think this wine has even more time to develop in the bottle...a great tasting wine, particularly with beef.

Fine, restrained nose with dark fruits predominant. Good deep colour and expressive nose when it opened. Lovely, typical Malbec with a great balance of rich, sweet fruit, spice, gentle acidity and tannin. Elegant, quite meaty, and long. Went very well with roast beef, tasted side by side with a much younger Vistalba Corte C 2013 which was a very drinkable, good wine but not quite in this league. A fine wine, as expected from Catena Zapata. Still plenty of life …

Splash decanted and drank 2 hours later. Beautiful dark fruit and surprisingly medium body. I was expecting a much more extracted tannic wine. Some vanilla spice with mild acidity and smooth tannins. This opened in the glass over the next hour and showed more complexity than my last bottle 3 years ago. Love it!

I opened another bottle a couple of months ago that, while ok, had shown signs of being slightly over the hill. However this was fresh as a daisy. After an hour it was beginning to sing with currants and tobacco flavours. Yum...

To look at this wine is quite opaque which I usually regard as a bad sign, but it has a beautiful nose, and blackberries, currants and a bit of BBQ meat on the palate. Very enjoyable and probably drinking at its peak.

Popped and poured at a BYO restaurant. Excellent nose, smokey berry fruit flavors explosion. Palate is full bodied, dense blackberry fruit trying to reveal itself but muted and on the tannic side. Had the waiter decant the bottle and it opened up slightly after about an hour but we had already finished most of the bottle by then! This needs another 5 years or more to show its true colors and it's got the stuffing to last much longer. Definitely …

Very ripe and needed significant time to bloom. Paired with spicy sausage and red sauce penne. Stood up well to those strong flavors. Aroma very broad and lingering. Should have drunk a bit sooner, but still tasty. Required a lot of filtering but still not overly dry in the mouth.

Exeptionally dark purple red colour - black to the rim. Big, bold and overwhelming nose with loads of fruit, licorice, chocolate, violets and other flowers, nuts and spicy oak. Cassis, sweet cherries/cherry licqour. Powerful spicy, earthy, very fruit driven taste with sweet undertones, but surprislingly well structured and firm in the base. Enormus lengt and consentration. In for the long haul.

Wow what a great wine. Much better than the 05 alta malbec at this stage. Lush and deep with soft tannins and very slight loam on the finish. This is very good now and will be even better in a few years.

Very primary nose that is a little nutty with some buttermilk on the edge. A little smokyness coming through. Creamy black currant palate with loads of liquorice. Great backbone with huge tannins and a piercing acidity. Plenty of oak influence with plenty of cool fruit. Excellent young wine.

Opaque black center with a thin purple rim. Very intense blackcurrant liqueur and licorice on the nose. Totally primary at this point with lots of concentration and intensity flavors of dark ripe cherry, blackcurrant and licorice. On the long finish there is a lot of roasted oak and creamy, yet bitter mocha. Very powerful tannins. A powerhouse of a wine that somehow manages to find a balancing point of its own. Interesting.

Last bottle in the store ... we couldn't decide who would get it, so we opened it up and split the cost. Dark, dark purple in color. Almost a sweet floral (violet?) characted on the nose. The acid and tannins are well-hidden behing rich plum and blueberry. Did I say dark? Did I say rich? A delicious wine.
