Cedric Bouchard, Roses de Jeanne Cote de Val Vilaine

In the beginning it showed the kind of maturing aromas that are at first a bit hemmed in by its long stay in the bottle. It quickly opened up to a wonderful and surprisingly fresh wine that went well with all the dishes of Mielcke & Hurtigkarl's seven course menu, except for the ones with a fair amount of chili.

Inflorescence la Parcelle B04/D11. Ready from the get go. Elegant, stone fruit. Later more tropical and supremely balanced. Lighter than current renditions.

Phenomenal and likely the best RdJ I have ever had. Caught this at a great time in its life. Should hold for a while. Full of life and exuberant. Absolutely delicious right now. The texture and length is fantastic.

Inflorescence La Parcelle B04 / D11. Floral, elegant, ripe peaches. Persistent finish. Excellent though lighter than current ones. Great with lobster raviole in bisque sauce.

Pall Mall 67, Singapore. Red berries, very fine mousse. Lychee. Less obviously peppery than previous releases of this. A very clean property my Japanese guests observed. Very sapid. The Val de Vilaine is always very consistent if not the most consistent in the range.

The one with DG's birthday and the best suckling pig in SG (IT Paragon) : Lovely start to the dinner. Nicely rounded out (I got to dinner late) by the time I arrived with bouquet and palate showing apples, nashi pear and almonds. Solid pedigree here with good concentration and density with good acidic giving this the lift it needs. Drinking superbly!

Dibbs' birthday part 2 : Brought as an aperitif. Initially a little lean and acidic, but put on weight beautifully with air and at a warmer temperature. Very pretty, precise orchard fruit with a round texture, seamless and at peak. My cost for this was under S$100...

Very fine mouse. Rounded soft caressing palate. Quite dense and concentrated. I'm not a huge champagne fan but this stood out.

Lovely nose with a lot of fruit, citrus, minerals, spices, toast, and some riper notes of stone fruit. Nice acidity on the palate with more minerals, orange, brioche, and lemon flavors. Long finish. Excellent bottle of Champagne! Complex and interesting, it lingers on the palate.

Mirabelle, cherry, poached pear - young, of course, and lean at first though fattening up a little with air. Still, pretty steely. Nice wine, but there are a lot of things I'd rather drink at the price.

Charleston Offlineorama IX; 10/16/2024-10/19/2024 (Various locations) : Funny that Michael C and I took a sniff, looked at each other and said in unison, “Coche.” Once the match goes away, there is a teasing hint of sweet, which never emerges, but leads you to great spices and sneaky white peaches. Finish is long; acids are pure.

Absolutely stunning Cédric Bouchard and probably one of the best I’ve ever had. Straddles the perfect middle ground of having tremendous energy and rounded tertiary complexity. It’s like biting into a meticulously crafted caramel lemon tart, the bottle was passed around and vapourized in a flash.

Allemand v Chave Los Angeles edition : Served from magnum. Absolutely shocked how youthful it is out of magnum compared to 750ml. Super bright acidity and high-toned yellow fruit with citrus zest, none of the apple notes I'm typically accustomed to. Much more energy and bubbles than out of 750 as well, just streams new and primary. It was a delicious wine don't get me wrong, but it's totally different out of mag than 750.

SLDS July 2023 : Light golden color. Flavors of pineapple and pear. Sweet palate with a mineral backbone. Great fruit purity but does lean a bit sweet for my taste. A touch more acid would be lovely.

Return to Willamette; 7/2/2023-7/8/2023 (Portland & Willamette) : Wonderful start to the dinner and so fun to get to drink one of these. Much fewer of them around these days. The genius of the wine is it really does feel like wine. Best served not too cold. And benefits from air and time in the glass. A bit of the herbal and more nuanced in style. Drinks well.

This was a great changeup from the Cote de Bechalin. This shows a bit more tension and spring-like qualities with white peaches, pears, red apples, strawberries, red flowers, acacia flowers, mineral notes, toast, vanilla, saline, jasmine, and biscuits. It’s good, but came across way younger and a bit prematurely aged. Chalky, red fruited, and mineral with just a hint of salinity. Quite precise, but again, coming across more delicate and youthful.

My last bottle from a case (remember when you could get a case?) and probably the worst of the bunch. Of course possible that it was an "off" bottle, but it just seemed tired; the midpalate intensity wasn't there and it came across just a tiny bit flabby. Some have suggested that these wines are best in their first few years, and perhaps that's right. It's a shame because a bottle two years ago was singing.

Label says wine is 2010, disgorged in 2017. A bit rough on opening but these wines always need significant air. Lovely red fruits and perfect balance, quiet but great energy and persistence. Was best three hours open when the nose was a basket of wild strawberries with cream. There’s no chalk or salt here, it’s a different and to me, very quiet minerality.

Drank this a few days after Val Vilaine ‘17. This tasted like a colder vintage for sure. Lots of chalky minerals to this, red skinned apples. Not the same level of ripeness, concentration or acidity as in 17 VV. A little bit more finesse here though. Really easy to drink.

Drank on New Years in Miami with davey, Reese, mike, nay, and stone crab. I don’t really know anything about champagne so bought this to see if there was anything revelatory, but didn’t get there. It was quite nice—not too sweet, opened up to some more interesting notes—but for me, champagne is still champagne. Will keep looking for something that changes that for me!

Even with a little bit of age, this is still very primary and I think that's what it's meant to be. The light peach colors lead you right towards what's in the glass. Purely blanc de noirs, with raspberry and strawberry notes... on top of a giant slab of chalk. Very good bubbly, especially good rich palate with plums, a bit of apple, very tart minerals long finish. A bit of pucker. Nose has just a hint of brioche to add to the lemony savory notes. Good balance and length. Beautiful craft that shows Bouchard’s ability to get so much out of his fruit even in this his ‘low end.’

Super well balanced wine. Had a nice creamy texture to it. Some sweetnes from the fruit and nice acidity to balance things out. Went surprisingly well with relatively fat ribeye steaks.

One of my last remaining bottles from a case, I wonder if I squandered the earlier ones. I think this showed the best of any of my bottles, as it seemed so well integrated. It has an unexpected lightness for a pinot noir--at least on palate entry--but closed with red fruits and tons of minerality. So fresh and clean. Invigorating.

Extremely appetizing nose. Delicate yet Rich, Pinot fruit. A touch of Cinnamon. Palate delivers as impressively as nose, which I find rare. Good gulpability.

DG 04/2018 Very floral, with jasmine, lavender and dried roses, eucalyptus, camomile, white pepper, melon, watermelon, cranberries, wet rocks, gunpowder. Juicy texture and refreshing acidity, very easy to drink and to love. 91pt

Disgorged 2014. This was fragrant and soft and complex and just very lovely, handling an array of dishes with ease.
