Leaf Day - Fill level to just above shoulder. Cork stuck to side of bottle and disintegrated despite my best efforts. Had to eventually push bottom portion of cork into bottle. Fortunately the remnants were small enough that when I rinsed the bottle they could be removed. Double decanted off a small amount of sediment. Second bottle of this in just over a year and it just keeps humming along with surprising grip & structure. Needed about an hr decant to really strut it's dark fruit and beautiful layering and secondary flavors. Classic old Rioja and impressive performance from the "regular" bottle.

What a great surprise to discover a small stash of this in the cellar. Just superb, mature but with plenty dark fruit left, beautifully balanced and soft. A classic. I don't see further improvement but this should hold out well for the next few years.

Just beautiful mature Rioja here, with well integrated wood and spice, and abundant acidity. Juicy, vibrant cherry fruit; round and succulent, with a long and clean finish. Sad to see this last bottle gone. This purchase has turned out to be one of the best I've made, with every bottle being a delight. Drink now and over the next few years.

Opened this 3L bottle at friends' birthday party with ~50 guests. The "wine people" at the party were fairly enthralled. Beautiful deep purple color; leather and cherries on the nose; plush, velvety mouthfeel, with more leather, tobacco, and Luden's Wild Cherry cough drops, plus a welcome hint of Brett; long, balanced finish, with the velvet lingering. I have had really good luck with holding the 2001 vintage from various producers. My luck ran out a little with this one. It has definitely already peaked and is on the way down. That's not to say it isn't still enjoyable, because it is a very good wine. The fruit is plush and smooth, but it lacks acidity and is very short on finish. Enjoy with some dark chocolate, perhaps. Decanted for an hour before serving, this was really singing tonight and the best bottle yet. The aromatics and flavor profile are similar to our last bottle in Feb 2012, but the secondary characteristics are more prominent and everything seems much fuller now. Medium purple. Drinking very smooth and fruity for an eleven year old wine. Tannins are softened/gone, but plenty of fruit remains. My wife commented "This is a big wine!" Moderate acidity and a little bitterness on the finish - should work well with the tortilla soup for dinner. The cork would not pull on this bottle, and disintegrated with further efforts, therefore this was filtered and decanted.

Medium red to purple color showing signs of bricking at the edges, nose has a hint of fruitiness. This wine was surprisingly vibrant, even at this advanced age, and was still drinking well. Pleasant pluminess and other dark fruits, decent acidity to balance the fruit, very soft tannins all making for a still-nice drinking wine. Don't wait much longer to drink this one
