Jean-Marc Seleque, Quintette Chardonnay Extra Brut, Champagne

Seleque Quintette is another old favorite BdB, hits all the usual BdB notes that I write about albeit with less tensile strength than perhaps the Agrapart from a few days prior. I should probably put in another bid soon as I’m almost out of this case.

A typical Blanc de Blancs aromatic profile on the nose. The palate is medium- to light-bodied, showing clear minerality and good balance.

Golden hue. Bright acidity, pear, pineapple, sour green apple, white nutty fruits, yeast, highly refreshing and mouthwatering

Pomme verte, un peu dull.

Grand Cru Selections Tasting (Eventi Hotel - New York NY) : Walkaround tasting with producers. 2021 base with reserve. Rich and bright, slightly more oxidative character than I prefer but so well made with exciting fruit.

La Fête du Champagne Grand Tasting (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY) : Walkaround tasting with producers. Array of fresh and baked apple with good richness and hints of toasted baguette. 2021 base.

If it isn't obvious - five parcels of chardonnay from the estate. And Jean Marc's favorite. Old parcels and he thinks his best. Salty and chalkiness but with texture and fruit. Base is '21, and then some reserve wines to it. 20% of reserve wine - but not the same reserve, apparently this is an actual Solera from 2012, renewed by 1/3 every year, which to him brings more depth and power to it. La Fête du Champagne Grand Tasting (RPM Seafood - Chicago IL) : Walkaround tasting with producers. 2021 base plus 20% solera back to 2012. Apple and bruised apple with array of spices, all brightly textured with very good length. So bright.

Dsg 12/2022. Selection of 100% Chardonnay plots. Nose of lemon peel and iodine. Having drunk the 2018 in 2023, I really liked the purity of this wine combined with great maturity that brought comfort and depth. I still see the same style, but with more roundness; it's a charming and savory Blanc de Blancs where the citrus fruit is relayed by great salinity. Seleque Quintette again an excellent BdB and showing very well now. A match for stuff that ppl sell at $150-200 for a lot cheaper (I guess the local seller does sell it in that price range though).

For $70, this performed exceptionally well, besting a number of higher-tiered Champs. Solid equilibrium of acidity, flavor intensity, and energy. Lemon, pear, and melon flavors present with medium complexity but captivating harmony. Finishes both focused and fun. Great with spicy dishes. This was disgorged in 9/23 from a 2020 base. The nose is fresh and poised with balanced tones of red apples, nectarines, peaches, baking spices, pears, toast, biscuits, nougat, vanilla beans, and some spring florals. There is good depth and seamlessness with a deft balance. The Medium bodied feel is balanced and poised with mouthwatering, high acidity that has lovely persistence. (Mostly) Burgundy Dinner with Friends (Asador Bastian - Chicago IL) : Spring flowers and crisp apple and lemon with very good weight. Clearly Extra Brut in its taut brightness, which really allowed the fruit to shine and didn't dominate. Very enjoyable now.

Uncorked Champagne (New Bahru) : Base 2020 with reserve wines dating back to 2012, very mineral, layered, super acidity.

Seleque has been the one grower that has really impressed me out of the run of duds of late. Solessence was a great entry level with loads of character and this Quintette similarly is a high quality BdB with all the right characteristics including a good seam of salinity and - which is what I increasingly look for - generosity despite the low dosage.

Opens with bread yeast and citrus notes, great definition. Some pears. Not as complex as I like.

White nashi pear nose. Again extra brut but with a strong lees-y character (richness on the palate and brioche on the nose) and the chalky texture that some esteemed commentators look for in Burgundy. Good angular cut of acid. Very vinous; it reminded me quite a lot of the Larmandier Bernier VVdL in style, albeit with only 70-80% of the intensity. I think will get much better if allowed to sit in bottle for a few more years.

Disgorged 3/20 Lovely fresh Chardonnay driven nose with pear and citrus fruit, chalk, brioche, and some fresh green herbs. Midweighted with a fine bead, terrific cut and an excellent balance of intensity delivered with a graceful hand. Drinking in a great spot right now. Outstanding.

Pastry cream, vanilla, almond cookies, (alpine) cheese rind, ripe quince and key lime on the nose. Intensity of aromas is high. The palate is fruitier, showing flavors of ripe yellow apple, ripe quince, toasted almonds, toasted chestnuts and brioche. Medium + intensity of flavors and a 35 second long finish that takes on an almost oxidative quality. Medium + body with great medium + acid. Medium + mousse. Lot 2019 Disg Oct 22 Dosage 4gr/L Blended with 20%solera Full bodied and rich. Creamy , with hints of fennel. Not a rough edge.

Fresh, BdB notes, clean, mineral with a dash of juicy tart white fruits (peach, pear, apple); Bright and fun yet serious. Love this with starters. 日本人パーテー

Starfruit, pineapple, vanilla and a clear oxidative profile. Lovely acidity and nice aftertaste... Great expressive flavors and a wine that I really enjoyed!
