Battenfeld Spanier, Spatburgunder Holzfass, Rheinhessen

I love this variety of Pinot that others might find too restrained or indirect. But you know how we all love those secondary and tertiary flavors that add mystery, intrigue, to a wine as it matures—well that’s all here from the start and it just gets more profound from there. So graceful, linear but generous in its own way. This is a spatburgunder made with conviction.

Drank at Meyer’s in Frankfurt. From memory a solid pinot with earthy notes and a smooth medium finish. Surprisingly young with good fruit. Paired well with my veal.
