like new cork - waxy no seepage; dark red with a little browning. When it opened up it showed surprisingly youthful red, cassis fruit with graphite, good lift. Well integrated tannins. Good texture. Long finish. Plenty of life left

Past it's prime, the '98 SLV still has a nice bouquet, but the soft tannins that makes this wine so wonderful while it's still young feel an it feeble when it is a bit older.

Drank at Rezaz with Erica and Vicki, 3/31/12. Some liquor. Decanted because cork broke. Continue to evolve in the decanter. Very pleasurable. VG+

No formal notes. A nice bottle of wine but wasn't all that memorable.

Red plum, red currants, mint, worn leather, with a loamy edge. This is freshtasting, with tart red cherries, red plum, and framed by notes of tobacco. As the tannins have melted away, and the fruit appears to be of middling intensity, I would drink up.

IMHO, still the most under-rated vintage of the last 15...maybe 20 years!..this wine was proof-positive! Though in all fairness, this is a benchmark wine. Still, I'd have to believe that this experience exemplifies what can be achieved by a producer that 'has it wired'. Another stalwart winery that I've, somewhat unbelievably, had little experience with; even dating back to my earliest wine-days in the mid-80's (perhaps because I was in college and there's never been an inexpensive Stag's Leap!). A pleasant bouquet with pepper and eucalyptus. Surprisingly together for a 12 year old 1998 Cab (not a good year to age). The most noticeable characteristic is a brown sugar reduction on the mid palette and nice structure on the finish. I would pass on the price today, however.

Pretty disappointed with this bottle. Nice nose made me expect a lot. However after some fruit up front, it completely disappeared at the back end. Decanted for 6 hours and it just never improved.

Dinner with wife, paired well with the food (sausage and lentil cassoulet), drank 1/2 the bottle after dinner and found it was much better paired. Medium body, nose of cooked fruit and menthol, finish of about 12-15 seconds. The medicinal aroma faded not long after decanting, found the fruit to taste jammy/plummy and the tannins to be smooth and well integrated. Look forward to the next bottle with a nice roast beef or lamb.

Very good cab. Very smooth and well balanced. Medium bodied, lightly dry, slightly sweet, sat well in the mouth. Finish 10-20 seconds, legs ran fast. Tannins now well integrated. Friend who drank said this went right into his nasal passage. Cork stained very dark, almost purple, like a jumilla or syrah. Purple in the glass. Some small crystals and wine several threw chunks of sediment in the last dregs. Drank at the right time, would not age further. Will explore …

Mineral (heme?), mushroom, and tea leaves. Some tobacco and licorice. Dark plum. Almst non-existant acidity. Smooth tannins. This wine is at its peak.

Great Day with Stag's Leap Wine Cellar (Napa CA) : Previous tasting notes are quite critical, sample I enjoyed had been decanted 6 hours before I tried it. There was some subtle stemminess/menthol overtone upfront but this seems to be blowing off. Suggest decanting this one for sure

Dinner at Our Place : Deep ruby color tending to garnet at the rim. Nose of leather, jammy red berries, green pepper and perhaps a touch of cooked fruit (plums?). Definitely a vegetal or stalky element there. I have no idea of the storage condition of this wine; it may have been slightly heat-damaged in its past. On the palate it is quite sweet and fruity with a touch of licorice. Not as high acid as I would have expected. …

a Friday at Doug's (Doug's) : i would have guessed loir blind - the nose is all green pepper with some leather peeking out. light body, here is shows that its not loir - the acidity is not there. a bit of a weird wine, herb dominated although there is some red fruit here..plums? stalkiness very obvious, eucalyptus/medicinal note? interesting wine...would drink again for fun but $100 for this? are you kidding? :)
