Clear, deep garnet with slight rim browning. Cassis, black cherry, chocolate. Low acids, low tannins. White pepper. Short, balanced finish. Past its prime a bit.

Great nose, great taste. You don’t want to swallow. Blueberry, silky tannins, full body, very long finish. Awesome

In a blind line up of cdp, cote rotie, it is standing out as a clear new world wine. Fruit forward, a little on the sweeter side, relatively balance. Wine is good on its own but falls short of the top cdp.

Double-decanted 1 hr before party, and it was ready to party. Luscious nose, soft tannins, tasty. Will try 2013 next...

Think the TN from pa1966stang is spot-on in their assessment of this Syrah from Joseph Phelps. This is clearly a cool-climate wine (94% Syrah and 6% Viognier from the Larry Hyde & Sons Vineyard in Carneros), and as such it's not a jammy mess and has plenty of acidity to support the flavor and add life. But it's lacking something to make it special. Dark fruit (plum and blackberry jam), graphite and a hint of leather on the palate. Smooth …

dark fruit with a waft of leather. A little bit of spice, but missing the meat fat/blood notes that some syrah has. Interestingly, this wasn't a bombastic fruit laden bomb that I always assume CA wines are. Probably more my fault than the wines. There is enough acid to keep things interesting and the tannins are starting to recede. The wine felt adolescent, not young but surely not even close to peak and downfall. Sadly this was my last bottle …

Purple inky color, harsh perfumes, bold, a bit tannic still, may had benefit from a longer decant, we only had 30 min and then drank over one hour. The palate is nice, notes of American oak which I'm not sure if it's really present. Good finish, good value!

PnP, a lot of fruits on the nose, like a candied cherry or cherry confection, some hint of chocolate, some flowery note. On the palate, high acidity with good tannin structure. Seems like a young wine still. Reminds me of Domaine de Pegau CdP, but not as interesting. Still very good effort here.

As I have previously written I am the chief cook and bottlewasher in the house so I take the liberty of coravining a glass of wine every night while preoping dinner. The wine for this past week was this bottle. It was consistant but Monday I pulled the cork and just let it sit overnight and what a difference it made. The nose is dark fruit wiht a hint of spice. THe palate was dark berries, tree bark, spice and …

Big wine - complex - slow ox for 4 hours, decanted but still needs some time - I'd say 2-3 years. Tremendous Syrah

Enjoyable wine with essence of pencil lead, licorice and petroleum. Smooth tannins and balanced acidity. A little light for a Syrah and the finish was regrettably short.

No formal notes, but this was quite good. Very different and cooler climate style than the 2010 Alban Reva served right after.

Deep dark purple. Very rich, oaky and decadent. Musty, earthy and licorice. Good length and depth. I like a more bold and complex Syrah but this is very, very good.

About two hour before leaving for The Coto Country Club for our first non-homecooked meal on Thanksgiving in a really long time, I searched the almost complete wine inventory for a nice Syrah. My first reaction was discovering how many nice bottles of Syrah we had. I chose the newly arrived 2010 Joseph Phelps Syrah. I opened and took a sip. Great color, almost a deep violet. Viscosity was silky but not chewy. Can’t say much else upon the quick …
