Served this slightly chilled (12'C?). Gorgeously fresh and pure dark fruit. Succulent, juicy, still primary... Tannines and alcohol beautifully blended into the dense and vicous core. Only a slight hint of spice, chocolate and licorice now. Sweetness and freshness in excellent balance. It even feels more fresh than sweet at the moment. Certainly not too heavy or intense. Deep amber color. Intense aromas of dried plums, apricots, raisins, figs, orange peel, honey, vanilla, cedar. Medium+ acidity, medium sweet, good balance. Taste of raisins, apricots, orange, gingerbread, clove, walnut.

Deep, copper colour - very good. Nose: very oxidative style - nutty with dried fruits - apricot, mango, risins, figs and orange peel. Some coffee and candied fruits. Acidity is medium. Wallnuts and hazelnuts, loads of dried fruits; nuts from alcohol. Long finish with coffee aromas. There is also a freshier fruity note of overripe apples and soft pear and dried papaya. Rich, sweet (111 g RS), seductive. Beautiful wine.

750 days lapse. Not much change. A bit more relaxed and diminished. Sensations of crumbled black fruit ink, slate/graphite, edged tannins, plum jam. ________ 12/21/2025 open eight days now, sensational after charcoal grilled porterhouse. Treat these unfiltered ports as solo desserts, with salt-fat cheeses (blue).

Tasted as part of WSET D5 exam prep. This wine was outstanding--a terrific example of the style. It has plenty of concentration and complexity, with all kinds of interesting aromas (caramel, spices, smoke, dried roses, walnut, raisins, orange peel, etc.). I would love to taste this again.

(Notiz initial vergessen, daher kurz.) 2023 auf die Flasche gezogen. Erstaunlich hellfarbig. In der Nase getrocknetes helles und dunkles Steinobst, viele komplexe nussige Töne und noch einiges mehr, das hatte sehr viel Komplexität. Am Gaumen sehr gute Säurestruktur, das hatte viel Biss und Zug. Auch hier sehr komplexes Aromenbild. Lang, anhaltend, viel Nachdruck. Klasse.

Old bottle, a bit oxidized. Cloudy and dark amber in the glass. Delicious golden raisins, figs, toffee, cognac and candied nuts. None of the “communion wine” taste as in some other ports. Opened for 3 days so far. Getting better and more intense in all the right ways with each passing day, a dessert in its own right.

Rich and full bodied, roasted walnuts, caramel pudding. Balancing high acidity, lots of toasty complexity with good length.

Chateau Palmer 1955- 2020 tasted blind : Lots of alcoholic heat on the palate. Aromatics are intense and complex with dried fruit, rum pot, xmas spices, very nice complexity but you have to cope with the rich, alcoholic palate.

2003 vintage

White plum, galce cherries, burnt orange, caramel, toasted walnut, amaro, black tea. So much finesse and concentration. The bitter notes balance the sweetness incredibly. Super long, herbaceous finish, very amaro like. Lively acidity keeping things fresh. This is very much so a wine that symbolizes an iron fist with a velvet glove. Incredibly powerful, but so elegant as well. Had it with chocolate mousse, but I preferred it by itself.

This was a bit rough and gloopy for my tastes. Perfectly decent port, just rather inelegant. Lots of caramel Christmas fruit, but not a huge amount of acidity or verve to support. This came highly recommended (and cost a pretty penny) from the cellars at Niepoort themselves, so perhaps I'm way off here? 87-88

2003 vintage

Opened after Thanksgiving dinner, alongside desserts. In the glass, seems misty somewhat, amber in color. Nutty flavor, hints of caramel, not too sweet. Less silky than other comparable tawny ports, easy to drink.

By the glass. Bitter almonds on the nose followed by memories of panetonne of candied oranges. A wine simply evocative. The palate is rich and balanced with a aftertaste of fruit Christmas pudding (!). I would have liked more depth. Still surprising for a winery that does not work very well in Spain. Por copas. Purchased for $67. Opened for Tawny Tuesday Turns Two. Very restrained nose of pipe tobacco and toffee. Very muted, almost disappointing. Different story on the palate with wonderfully lovely acidity with candied orange and citrus notes. Lots of the vanilla pipe tobacco and toffee really blend nicely with the acidity. Medium length finish.

Consistent with previous note, but less brownish, less oxidated in style (¨a little more Ruby¨), more liquor cherries, but equally good balance of sweetness, moderate (but not absent) acidity and alcohol.

1985 bottling (!) so 1975 vintage or so. Very sweet but with lots of fruit and caramel. Wonderful.

Lovely darker orange color, caramel and raisin on the nose. Taste of dried peach and raisin, caramel on the palate. Initially medium burn that blows over with a little time, retains some spices, generally balanced and mouthwatering.

Intense ripe black fruits, black raspberry, blackcurrant, plum, and prune, plus chocolate, baking spice, and a touch of green herb. The finish is quite long, tannins for real, with loads of strong black tea, like a strong cup of English builder’s tea. This is one for the Syrah fans, and myself, I like it more and more with each sip. Keep this one in mind for Christmas dinner.

Purchased for $50 and opened for #tawnytuesday. Burnt amber tawny in color with garnet hues. Lovely nose of toffee, vanilla stone fruit. On the palate, lots of the same with the stone fruit morphing into peach and nectarines. Almost hints of peach tea. I love the play between the vanilla and stone fruit. The mouthfeel is luxurious, almost like a cashmere sweater. So soft and elegant. Yet the acidity is still vibrant and lip-smacking. There's a sight bitter orange note …

There's an odd damp earth note in the aromas and on the finish which is off-putting, but otherwise this is very impressive. The Madeira comparison is fair, there's a great deal of acidity, and plenty of intensity. Loads of red fruit, bracing, spicy and creamy. Very complex and moreish. I do wonder if there's a hint of cork taint, but it hasn't gotten worse with air; I look forward to trying another bottle (probably from a different bottling) to see …

Elegant and refined but also a bit boring. Lacks personality and depth. Alcohol seems to dominate a bit to much. Huge disappointment.

I was a bit disappointed with this. Was hoping for lots of dark berries and ruby character, but I was hit with an overwhelming note of camphor in the nose, which (admittedly) is a personal pet hate of mine. My friend actually quite enjoys it, so he gets to finish the bottle.

Fortified Evening with the TWS North London Group (Must & Lees, Warren Street) : Brown-toned orange, dark amber perhaps. Nose remiscent of a school stationary cupboard, pencil eraser an amazingly accurate suggestion from Peter, and I also come up with those squeezy bottles of school paint. We have now reached this stage of the evening.... Almost like a Madeira on the palate, delicious and will go on forever probably.

Unfiltered (so crucial*) from Vinha da Pisca, and Vale do Pinhão e Ferrão, vineyards in the Cima Corgo. This bottle was purchased recently from the shelf at Honeybee/La Colmena on Bagley. NOSE: brooding and bright; popcorn; boot leather scented of mint; active churning crumbles of black fruit pulp , graphite, curry, and strawberry tar. Second port for me. The first time it crashed and burned (tawny), This time it was delicious! Decanted for an hour+. Nose was not very fruity, alcohol, spices, raisins, prune and blackberries. Palate was lucious and sweet, but balanced. Not as liqueur-ish as expected, surprisingly refreshing. The bottle was emptied before we knew it.....Had it with charcuterie, allround very nice match, but exceptional match with dark chocolate , gingerbread biscuits, and crackers with the local brown cheese G35!

Tasted for #tawnytuesday. My first Niepoort Port and what a memorable experience. It first starts with the color. It's almost like a rainbow, the way the color fades from ruby red to garnet to tawny to light orange on the rim. On the nose, delicious notes of caramel, butterscotch, stone fruit and tea.
