Domaine des Lambrays, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Le Cailleret

Well aged burgundy with notes of honey suckle, cooked peach, ripe apple, toast. High acidity.

I was expecting this to be completely oxidized - and it wasn't! Actually was drinkable, but not special.

This wine showed a certain style, was drinkable, but too old.

Fat. Long. There is mineral. From magnum. Others hated. I thought okay.

Clos des Lambrays-Fifteen Vintages (2011 to 1919) at 2014 La Paulee; 3/13/2014-3/15/2014 (Various Locations, San Francisco) : Magnum. Medium yellow. A blast of honey upfront. Rich, creamy, mouth filling and long. Golden Delicious apple, caramel, spice and lees-a very satisfying, complex array of flavors. Grand Cru texture and length with saving acidity arriving late, although I'd have to say the acidity is only average. Wonderful if you lean toward rich, broad white Burgundy with less precision. Not premoxed, hurray! Aromas of pear, apple, white flowers, minerals and baking spice. Gorgeously balanced with plenty of elegance and finesse along with good concentration and depth on the mid-palate showing ripe apple and white stone fruit with a little bit of oak spice. Perhaps lacking a little in complexity. Long, balanced minerally finish. A great example that shows the breed of this vineyard.

Medium straw yellow. Fresh, intense nose with tropical fruit and citrus, some creamy oak - no problems with this bottle. Medium/full bodied on the palate, grapefruit, citrus, mouthwatering acidity, some creamy and spicy oak on a sustained, lingering finish. Excellent if perhaps not wholly typical.

Dull, deep golden colour. Completely advanced aromatics, no life left in this at all. Totally shot.

Medium straw/gold. Distinctly more evolved on the nose too with ripe pear, hints of fallen apple even. Reasonable life and freshness on the palate, with some tropical and citrus fruit, and citrus and creamy oak on the finish, but this has definitely evolved prematurely. Only 85-86 on this showing.

Medium straw, slightly worrying gold tints. However no hint of oxidation on on the nose, with fresh ripe, almost tropical fruit, citrus, hint of creamy oak and nutty and mineral notes. Indeed this has really come together well with the oak now nicely integrated. The palate shows good complexity on the mid-palate and outstanding laser-like acidity which carries a long slightly creamy, minerally finish. Really outstanding and drinking very well.

Medium straw yellow, gold tints. Rich, quite oaky nose, underlying ripe fruit, cut through with attractive minerality. Ripe, almost tropical fruit on the initial attack, obvious oak but better integration than when last tasted, no huge depth but a persistent finish with attractive mineraility, some citrus and thrilling acidity. A little too much oak for me but quite classy even so, with lovely contrast between rich oak and fruit on one hand and acidity and mineraility on the other. Perhaps …

Medium yellow, with golden tints. Medium + intense nose, still quite youthful and dominated by creamy oak and minerals, but there is underlying complexity with traces of pears, honey and lime. Good weight on the palate and excellent crisp balancing acidity. Good depth here too with lots of creamy oak and stony minerals on the mid-palate, trademark steely minerals emerging before lingering notes of pears and cream at the end of a long, well balanced finish. Tasted side by side with the 2000 Lambrays Caillerets in a restaurant in Burgundy. I preferred the '96 - by a landslide. The '96 is pure and precise, with a good spine of acid, yet ample fruit to balance it out. In short, this is yard stick Puligny from a great vineyard and vintage. Tasted side by side with the '96. Despite high expectations (and my excitement to see it on the restaurant's list!), the '00 came across as almost new world in style, and a bit overdone, IMO. Kind of fat / flabby. Tropical (pineapple) fruit. IMO, does not have the balance or acid structure to improve with age. The '96, which was made in a totally different style (see TN), was much more to my taste.
