Ott, Stein Gruner Veltliner Erste Lage, Wagram

Bought from Flatiron Wines in NYC. I’ve never had a Gruner Veltliner and so did not know what to expect. The first glass was rather muted, with some mild grassy notes and perhaps melon on the nose. The wine opened up way more after a few days in the bottle (had sprayed Argon to keep it from oxidizing too much). The remaining glasses had notes of sweet fennel, grass, soft hay, and yellow apple. Soft stone fruits, maybe apricot, white peppercorn, flint. Oddly dry and low acidity and a touch flat on the attack, texture is oily, but makes you salivate in the finish. Air really gives the wine more of a pleasant body. Finish is medium with a soft touch of white peppercorn and butter. Interesting wine, not sure I find it very inviting to take more sips. Shows overall complexities but would like to see more in the mid-palette. 89pts

Excellent dry gewurtz - limited acidity -- nicely balanced

again floral, red apples, yellow fruits. med body, lots of finesse. phenolic backbone bringing a savoury finish, minerals, long finish.

fat palate, but smoky, reductive. cream, toast. long finish.

Chamomille, green herbs, lemon-lime

Prob wait a few years - very good Gruner with some yellow curry.
