Blind Dinner at Browntrout (Chicago, IL) : Served blind. Slightly more restrained than the Bedrock I had beside it. But that's not saying much. This, too, screams young new world syrah. Overripe, big, alcoholic, and oaky. No thanks.

Blind Dinner at Browntrout (Browntrout - Chicago, IL) : Served blind. Definitely had the signature of a powerful new world syrah. Lots of power and density on the nose and palate, but it's just hard for me to like without acidity. This didn't have much, and therefore, I found it a bit cloying.

Sadly, no notes were taken but this was a beautiful bottle of wine. Great aromatics on the nose, big rush of flavor on the palate, nice silky texture, and some beautiful acidity on the finish. Seemed pretty open, but I would be in no hurry to drink these as they should have many, many more good years ahead.

My heavens was this nice. Dense ruby. Very expressive nose of liqueur-like black fruits, flowers with some spicey nuance. Very rich but lively across the palate. The wine has great fruit rich density without losing any energy. This is clearly a california syrah. I wonder if it will get much better. I look forward to following it.

This bottle just improves with each tasting. Wonderfully nuanced, very deep syrah. It is really tight at opening, so a good two hour decant would be well rewarded. Great tannic backbone and wonderfully spicy, almost leathery syrah in the mid palate with a very long finish.

Rough and rugged coastal syrah, full of expressive black pepper and saddle leather, and wonderful dark berry flavor. But it carries all of this bramble with amazing aplomb, and once you get past the wonderfully complex nose (green peppercorn, licorice and blackberries) you'll be thankful the rugged tannins are still in place. It's got a long long time to go before it becomes a senior citizen.

A wonderfully dark and wild wine, with rough, almost prickly tannins, a mix of spices straight from an herbs du provence bottle, rich yet tangy blackberries and wild mushrooms. It really fills out the mouth with its exuberance and is young but already starting to show a long-term potential of thought-provoking charms. Hold off for another 18-24 months to let those tannins soften. 92+ at a minimum.
