A rather disappointing bottle. More cloudy and lighter in color than the 93 Brulee drank side by side. Slightly metallic while still giving some red fruit / pleasure. The highs of engel are certainly worth chasing, but this bottle was not remarkable.

Opened at V&HH. P&P and enjoyed. Small glass sample, but classic Engel - red fruited, playful, pure though I don't think this will last too long. Always a pleasure to try, but would recommend drinking up.

A man's char kway teow and Leroy : Deep and concentrated bouquet showing off sarsaperilla, raisins, licorice, cardamom, incense smoke and angelica root. Palate is stunningly fresh with stand-out concentration and purity of fruit yet with layers and delineation between fruit and minerality. There is a wide spread of reviews here, and I don't know if this is bottle to bottle variation or just different tastes. In any case, I may have been lucky - my only bottle and it was wonderful. Rich and deep with dark fruits, forest notes and a flavor that lingered long after you swallowed. Clos Vougeot can be so variable that it was great to have one this good.

The 2001 Rene Engel Clos Vougeot is close to full maturity, showing a rich profile of meaty fruits and nuanced Grand Cru core. My guess was 1997 Echezeaux. However, knowing the upside of a good bottle of Rene Engel, I know this was a slightly underwhelming Engel, it didn’t show the ethereal nose of a good bottle of Engel would. Fully mature with cooler vintage berries note. Maturing. 1997/ 1996? Echezeaux / Vosne Romanee? (89/100)

Very glad to have a chance to taste another wine from this great producer. This was full and rich but slightly closed in on itself. Textbook clos vougeot with an added punch of fruit and concentration.

Very pure red fruits, strong mineral/iron (quite nuits in character). Good length finishing with lightly mentholated tannins. Pale red to the rim, very light and aromatic flavours. This doesn't quite hit grand cru quality for me - the components aren't integrated enough. No secondaries yet. I think could improve over 3-5 years potentially getting more interesting but very pretty now.

Granato carico e cupo, appena aperto a casa era un bellissimo granato limpidissimo, il viaggio gli ha fatto male. Naso profuma di fruttini rossi quasi canditi, fragoline di bosco, ribes rossi, lamponi, terra bianca dopo una giornata di acqua, cola, liquerizia e menta, bocca buona , fresca, equilibrata, croccante, con una chiusura tra il frutta e liquerizia.

Fine, complex nose with peppery and floral aromas, herbs and red berries - a bit masculine. On the palate fine structured with similar aromas but not as spectular as the nose promised. A bit of unharmonic acid. The finish is perfect and lasted forever. A very nice interpretation of a Clos de Vougeot.

Nose red fruit, earth, spice, a bit sweet; lovely complex smells you would encounter when walking through a forest in autumn. Taste is mouth filling, complex, with the tones in the nose combined with a slightly bitter acidity that is very appealing. Taste developes further on with excellent length. This wine has opened up beautifully.
