This is drinking beautifully now with the ripeness receded replaced by classic St. Emilion notes of dark chocolate, black earth and sweet tobacco. Medium-bodied and layered with a fine mouthfeel and a smooth finish with complex notes of charcoal minerals and limestone chalk. This is how a good St. Emilion should age!

I am not sure what to think of this one. I had a bottle of this 3-4 years ago and it was a delicious, opulent, baroque wine. This bottle was monolithic and brooding I would have taken a good Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux over this any time. Dumb phase?

Bordeaux trip with friends, Jan-Feb 2025; 1/30/2025-2/2/2025 (Bordeaux, St.Emilion) : Tasted blind. Dark impression. After a short decant the wine seemed to hide its beauty. Dark berries, espresso, tannins present. It improved with every sip, good balance between fruit and acidity, very smooth tannins. Will improve with age but very good already! 93+

Exploring Chateau Batailley (Burwood) : Deep ruby going towards garnet, red around the edges. Barnyard skunk, black fruits, pencil shavings, menthol, cedar. The body is so plush and smooth, tannins very slightly drying, finish is medium towards short. More red fruit on the palate, the barnyard skunk is in the background, pencil shavings, cedar, some alcohol warmth, a very little bit bitter. Interesting, I do like it.

Coravin fun - Chateau Batailley/Cellatracker in the flesh with ninetails (My place, Burwood) : From Coravin. Slight fruit tea and black tea, brambles, plums, touch of brett, a little red berry, slight herbaceous notes, smidge of alcohol warmth, fruit has a 'compote on the way to jam' quality, sweet baking spice, polished. Nice nose. Juicy, fleshy, fresh, surprisingly so given the slightly encroaching alcohol warmth, dark fruits less delineated but showing black over red here, super persistent tannins are coarse …

Beautiful dark fruit bordering on the edge of over-ripeness but staying on the right side of the line, complicated by chestnut purée, dry aged beef, and cèpe. Really a delight.

Another beautiful example from the fantastic 1998 vintage on the right bank. This was stood upright for several days (although there ended up being minimal sediment at the end). It was a very fresh bottle, with red and dark fruits, pomegranate and boysenberry. It's in a lovely spot in its development, but possesses some tertiary interest with all the warmth and richness of the vintage. Generous and satiny, this was a killer bottle.

Hedonistic Wines! (Jason's House) : Prep: From a magnum - Decanted for 3 hours prior to the event and consumed throughout the evening. Tasting Note: This was my first experience with this wine (from any vintage) and I was pleasantly surprised! California is known more for their fruit and Bordeaux is known more for their balance (acidity and tannins), but this wine had both! Purity of fruit and great structure! I have read that this wine is more "modern style" …

Five hour decant. Deep dark ruby color. Rich nose of charred pecan pie and blackberry. Smooth, dry palate. Full tannins on the longish finish. This is much better than my notes suggest. I had been drinking for three or four hours straight at this point. This was another beauty from Jason’s (MN Wine Junkie) cellar.

Tasted blind. I thought it was a left bank. Initially was all about pencil lead and burnt rubber. After more than two hours on a decanter it became completely balanced. Heady nose of ripe blackcurrant and plum compote, dried thyme. Very elegant on the palate, super fine tannins and mild acidity, very silky, sweet finish of sour red cherries.

Stupendous wine. Intensity on a different level. Dark dark fruits, mocha, cedar (new oak but not obtrusive), sweet fruits, so long that you can taste it for hours. Certainly one of the best wines I’ve tasted in a long time . But not in any way over top. WOW

Nose shows plenty of classic Bordeaux character. Tobacco, pencil shavings, dried red and black fruit, cigar box, dried leaves and flowers. Silky entry, med body, med acid, med tannin. Well balanced and a pleasure to drink. A touch of espresso on the finish. Still an awesome wine that is perfectly ready to drink. It should hang on for at least another 10 years.

Bordeaux for Napa lovers, but far better than Napa. I've commented three other times on this wine so will simply say it's luscious, complex, provocative, and profound. It'll surely age well and benefit from tertiary flavors. Yet it's fully enjoyable now and, frankly, a great value at this stage. The only California Bordeaux blends I'd pick over this are Ridge MB and Dunn HM, and both need 20+ years in good vintages. This extracted beast performed on release. Normally not …

Admittedly, we are drinking this early but Kyle said that I should ignore the ready to drink report. We opened it because the 16 Napa cab we popped first was way off. It drank like an 18. Just not ready. So, this is barnyard and leather; freshly oiled leather; perfume. The palate is mid weight and the tannin lifts to the upper palate. It’s definitely not ready but it has so much potential. The nose will become mesmerizing. It’s on …

Fabulous. It was wonderful in primary colours but now it is secondary it is in a serious magisterial mode. Slightly dusty, almost Pessac Leognan style. Deep and complex. Glorious example of a great right bank vintage. I leave it to others to describe it, I just bathe in the mixture of tastes and smells. Goes on for ever. Wow! (Will keep for years). Blind I would have either said Petrus or Vieux Chateau Certan. Very Pomerol plateau type of wine, right at the start, with a plush black berry cedar and leather inflected nose, followed by an all black fruited mouthfeel with an extremely inviting and luscious texture, the wine is generously open with excelent depth of flavors, tanins are very fine and polished, it is obvious there is great mastery at play here, as the phenolic maturity, the level of extraction, the …

Tasted blind. Dark red with orange rim. Blackcurrant, stewed strawberry, crushed petals, cigar, cedar and pencil shaving. Perfume and elegant. Hint of cool climate. Balanced, good structure, and well made. Long finish. I thought it was a grand cru claret from Margaux. I was surprised it was from Right Bank. Prime to drink now, and can cellar for another decade easily.

Quite solid, fully integrated. Not backwards like some 98 right banks still are. I would say possibly on the downslope at this point. Some good spices but nothing that blew me away given the vintage. I think TR might be an earlier drinking wine in general based on other experiences anyways.

A remarkably good bottle (cork, fill, etc) and wine. This had everything. A little coiled initially, an hour in the decanter had it ready to roll. All the best facets of 98, with ample ripeness and concentration. The Merlot component (80% from what I can glean) really shines today, with all sorts of plum and berry fruit remaining, alongside a well developed tertiary spectrum. Balanced acidity and resolved tannic structure have this lovely specimen ready to deliver some pleasure. An …

Some wines one has to try. The top shoulder level, fully wet work that fell in the bottle on the first touch of the corkscrew. Interesting tasting and talk with the enthusiastic Francois Mitjavile, the owner at Chateau Tertre Roteboeuf. What makes his wines truly special, is the fine grained tannins and the phenolic maturation. The wines feel light and drinkable quite early. The 2017 has aromas of blackberry, plum, cherry, cedar, coffee, chocolate and earthy notes. Very elegant and long.

Last tasted 2 years ago, it is consistent in its delivery. It is unusually forward for a 1995 wine and is fully mature only needing an hour in the decanter. The nose is deeply fruited with ripe red cherry and blackberry and is the wine's best feature. The palate is displaying secondary notes and is well balanced with good depth. As the fruit has faded the finish has suffered with over tannic notes exposed.

In the category of hedonistic Bordeaux blends enjoyed young, this wine tops my flavor chart, ahead of New World contenders. Why? I think it's the deep, raw oxblood flavor. What does oxblood taste like? No clue, honestly. In dress shoes, oxblood is a darker shade of red with more brown than purple. I imagine the equivalent here, where oxblood is deeper and darker in flavor than raw beef/blood. Perhaps more like bone marrow. The rich, bloody flavor of TR is …
