Allowed to breathe in glass 1 hour. Clear deep garnet-blood red color. Bouquet of stewed red fruits and their liqueurs; green tobacco, saddle soap, beef biltong, red miso, stony soil. Medium-full body, seamless, balanced, lingering finish. Improved with air, held up fine under vacuum stopper for 4 days in refrigerator.

13% alcohol. Tasted blind. Somewhat evolved and slightly translucent rusty maroon color. Quite big and heady nose with classic Rioja aromas of wizened figs, some leather saddle, light vanilla tones, a little bit of cherry marmalade, a hint of pouch tobacco, an evolved touch of meaty character and a whiff of dill. The wine is dry, dense and firm on the palate with a medium body and somewhat concentrated flavors of dried figs, vanilla, some sour cherry bitterness, a little …

Wonderful nose of old wood, tobacco and limestone. Very tertiary as others have noted. Definitely at or near peak. Very balanced on the palate. Medium + finish. Delicious and a steal for $35.

Nicely aged Rioja. Plenty of punch and funk on the nose, but a bit understated on the palate.

Allowed to breathe in glass 1 hour. Clear deep garnet-blood red color. Classic bouquet of mixed dark fruits and their liqueurs; cedar chips, cigar humidor, spiced mincemeat, leather, stony soil, hints of balsamic and black olives. Similar on the palate, medium-full body, excellent balance, seamless, mellow. Improved with air, showed best on day 1 and 2, becoming a bit rusty by day 4.

What a surprise this was. Tertiary, and awesome. Did not expect it to be as good as it was. A steal at $35. Glad I have 2 more. I dont see this wine improving further. My cork crumbled too, will use the ah so next time.

Cork crumbled, but wine was fantastic. Young and vibrant nose of berry, cherry, cedar, violet. Integrated tannins with just enough acid to clear the palate

With the Christmas dinner - turkey and all the trimmings. Decanted for about 4 hours. Powerful vegital/farmyard nose, little bottle age with deep garnet to the edge. Powerful fruits and elegant but still firm tannins. Long and luscious finish. Lovely wine, plenty of time left.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #102; Rioja (By CvR) : Mature bouquet with espresso, oak and some pleasant barnyard flavors. On the palate dried fruits, some chocolate, coffee and caramel. Soft acidity and tannin as well as beautiful oak. Mature and still very much alive and pleasurable. Drink now or within 2 years is probably the wisest thing to do.

My bottle showed no signs of bricking and was a beautiful garnet red. The nose was definitely the high point on this wine with a combination of berry, plum, and wood. It showed its age as the night went on as it lost a little of its flavor a couple of hours in. Glad I chose not to decant but simply to leave open and allow to breath in the glass. Really enjoyed it - wish I had another couple …

Tastes alongside a Faustino 2001 GR, and man were they worlds apart! The Faustino was still unbelievably youthful, fruit forward, boisterous, and zippy for a 14 year old wine. The marques was showing all the signs of good aged red, exhibiting secondary flavors of earth, stone, crimini mushroom, prune juice, fermenting compost...a fascinating comparison of years.

long years didn't do a ton for this one, but still a very good wine. Some aged cherry and red fruit. Plenty of acid, tannins have mellowed and oak is integrated. Nice core of leather and earth beside the fruit. This one has nowhere left to go, so if you're holding onto any, you might as well start to pop those corks.

Was poured this blind and I completely whiffed. My first thought was 'Super Tuscan', then Right Bank Bordeaux, then back to Tuscany, then to Calabria, then to Emilia Romagna Sangiovese, and then back to Tuscany. Elements to this wine reminded me of wines from all these regions. The reason I did not think of Rioja is because of the excellent but not over the top acid, the relatively subdued oak treatment by Rioja standards, and the overall balance. There is …

Some visible sediment to the otherwise clear dark brick colored wine that fades closer to the rim and shows orange/brown hues. Moderate intensity and bright/hazy reflections. Viscosity is medium. The nose with a touch of air time is fairly medium to delicate in intensity. Scents of forest floor, dried cherry, dried currant, cigar box, dried flowers and light black tea notes. On the palate moderate acidity plays in front of the low level tannins of this medium bodied wine. Flavors …

Much better than the previous bottle. I had planned to let this rest a while, but it made the most sense with the pork roast dish I'd prepared. It's a good thing, too, because this medium-bodied effort was on point tonight, with a showing modestly past its price-point. Firmly structured, and very fresh. Not the most complex wine, but solidly composed and a very good companion to food. 13,0% abv, recommended

This wine could be in the every day red rotation. Darker in color, bordeaux-ish yet light enough in taste, fruit to not overwhelm most foods. Nose is pleasant, good mix of wood/earth and light berry, cherry. Taste is consistent with this, low acid and easy to enjoy.

PnP, served non-blind across two nights. Traditional color, no sign of age. Reductive, loads and loads of dried mushroom, autumn leaves, barn stall, freshly turned earth, etc., but little sign of the fruit. Tart, acidic and not very interesting, let alone satisfying on night 1, night two, somewhat better. Medium bodied, not a lot of fruit here - still, a good food wine. Not much that's Grand about this Gran Reserva. I have one left that I'll let age indefinitely …

It was perfect timing for this wine, both bottles. At peak, and I think they should be drinked now. It took like an hour to open up and start developing those woody, floral aromas in full. Fresh, the exact balance between wood and wild berries. The level of acidity was perfect, and was a great companion for a very long dinner with very good friends.

Enjoyed over two nights with consistency. Spiced American oak on the nose with a prominent herbal character. Good dose of fruit but clean and lean with the acidity seeming to stand up a bit better now than it did two years back. Late, medium tannin. Nice length but not real interesting on the palate right now. Hard to say if this will get better or not but it certainly isn't going to go belly up anytime soon. You would hope …

Wow, wow and wow... Still so amazed by this wine. For something I paid less than $15 for so long ago, it has held up incredibly well. Glad I have a few more in the cellar. I have always liked this wine, a fantastic value, it has always been a dark, rich full bodied wine with soft tannins and great flavour. Decanted for 2 1/2 hours. Ruby red color. Floral nose of violets, roses, and sandalwood. Light with flavors of dark berries and cherries. An aromatic spice, cinnamon and pepper. Medium granular tannins that are well rounded and balanced with the acidity. Warm finish that lingers. The complexity of the wine increased with cheese and olives. The wine was paired with a rosemary red-wine leg of lamb as the main course. This wine is peaked - enjoy it now!
