Another disappointing bottle. Still with some acidity and freshness beneath a rather strange cloud of leesy / nutty characteristics. Undoubtedly not shwoing its best. These Morey era wines can be transcendental or total duds - does not seem to be much in between. Also a Corney U.K. bottle FWIW

The 2004 horizontal with MS (Pall Mall) : Not pre-moxed but showing tired and advanced for sure. Rich bouquet with hazelnuts, caramel, mango and cardamon. Palate quite rich but already showing weary and fading. Good acid profile on this one though, probably would have gone well with an oily fish or a seafood dish with some beurre blanc.

01637, Corney OCB, incredibly youthful. Sesame reduction, popcorn, gunflint, pale white fruit, light pyrazine which after blowing off reveals such life and energy. Best of old Leflaive even better in this vintage. 93-94

01647, Corney OCB, decanted to remove dry cork. Rich yellow fruit, light sesame, classic old styler with striking spiciness and impact for the appellation. 92

This continues to be an uninspiring wine. Nice enough nose, poor on the palate.

No pox, nice nose, good but unimpressive.

Ripe and fully mature at this point. Marzipan, fresh butter, bruised apples, and pear on the nose. Its broad and rich on the palate. Powerful, rich and dense, overall pretty baroque. It's well balanced in a rich and dense style with less lift than I would prefer. That said, this is serious, structured, rich and powerful wine on the down slope of peak for me. No reason to wait.

A suave smooth and buttery rich bottle that was a magnificent choice for home made crab cakes. I am shocked at the richness and full body the wine shows. I would imagine most have drunk their stash, sadly this is my last and a beautiful expression of burgundy. Drink now.

Bottle in excellent condition. A bit dark in color, this showed some attractive complexity for 15 minutes, then it fell apart completely. Not particularly oxidized, this just seemed over the hill. Not scored.

Maybe the best Clavoillon I’ve had. Really lovely. Great zip to this, with mineral flintiness, and showing some midpalate depth. I’d say punching above it’s usual reputation today. Perfect with lobster pasta.

Fully mature. Lots of upfront gun powder "leflaive flintiness" Underneath is a medium yellow full bodied but lean wine with a good start and a weaker finish - almost moving towards being oxidized at the end. Not the best example of this wine but at least it's not dead.

At last a 2004 Leflaive that is neither hopelessly premoxed or tasting of a fire in tyre factory ! The colour is a correct green-gold and the nose while showing some reduction and matchstick character has plenty of apple, white peach, honey and mineral to grab your attention. The palate is medium weight with good drive and balance leading to a fine finish. Left overnight in the fridge the reductive character became somewhat more prominent but still within reasonable boundaries …

Popped and poured. Pale yellow color and not a hint of oxidation. Phew. The nose reeks of smoke and oak but I find it quite pleasant. The palate is open and ready to go. I find the wine quite linear and stony with faint hints of fruit. I enjoyed this a lot but also wish that it cost a lot less.

2016 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium - Kelly, Alan and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/3/2016-11/12/2016 (Villa D’este, Lake Como, Piedmont, Milan and Frankfurt) : Just fact that this is not premoxed deserves a recognition. May be because Raphael is in the room but the first note is Sulphur/Coche flint. Fresh nose displaying citrus, lemon oil, burnt sugar and sesame. Very good concentration, citrus driven palate impression, bright acidity and medium mineral, and a medium finish with sesame and flint as the end …

Well, this should be consumed relatively soon was my first thought.. From the bottle it seemed over the hill... But voila--- an hour later the wine really smoothed out, gained some complexity and smoothed out on the finish.

Gloves off ! This wine had correct colour and some discernible fruit character that might have approached 91-93 if the wine making had been of professional standard. That matchstick character is too often a euphemism for the results of too much SO2 and sloppy wine making - this wine was all mercaptan and DMS. Give me many other good young makers anyway ! If you dodge the premox and the sulphur you might have a bottle that resembles the great …
