Dark gold color, like black mangrove honey. Dry tight cork that split horizontally when opened. Full bodied, viscous, not quite enough acidity left to balance the sweetness. Still, the lychee juiciness is appealing, for a glass or two, maybe paired with a first dessert using fresh lychees and a light, flaky pastry crust. Better when served nearly cold, it seems lighter, easier to drink.

Boston Wine + Poker, Salem, Mass.: Tasted blind. This is a huge, heavyweight. Intense flavors of lychee and peppermint. It clearly has some age (though there is no indication that it is 27 years old). The assembled hooligans had no problem identifying this as a Zind-Humbrecht Grand Cru gewürztraminer.

This has last far longer than most traminers. What once must have been an exotic, intense kaleidescope of flavors, has evolved into a medium bodied beauty of subtlety and grace. This is pretty and subtle after a half hour in the glass while retaining the tropical exoticism that is the quintessence of this grape. Wow really pretty- question is how much longer.

Rhone gathering - 08 Rayas, 85 and 89 La Las (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown) : Very fresh example. Sweet yellow fruits, lychee, mineral and smoke. Excellent concentration. Once again the finish clips due to high alcohol. Overall, this is a nice mature ZH Gewurztraminer.

Night with the boyz at Capella (Capella) : I really liked this, honey, passion fruit fairly dark and evolved. It doesn't have the acidic backbone to keep it alive for that much longer but it's still pretty damn good.

Unquestionably Mature : Oily, low acid, quite dry, with pronounced nectarine, almond, and flower scents. Exotic, still a lovely wine.

A small gathering at Mark's duck house - Grange, A shot in the dark, Rousseau, Yquem and more. (Marks duck house, Falls Church, Va) : Godden color which is typical for ZHs. Smoke, tea, ripe dry yellow peach, orange rind, a hint of lychee and mineral. Excellent concentration, sweet ripe dense fruit and burnt caramel. Despite good intensity in mature ZH Gewurztraminers, I typically find the finish to be short and bitter perhaps due to high alcohol. This will last …

Such an amazing deep gold color setting the stage for a great nose of pineapple, lychee, honeysuckle. Medium to full body, with much suppressed acidity and a light minerality. Could have kept drinking this for ever...

Beautiful golden color. If I could rate this on the nose alone, it's a 100---absolutely beautiful aromas of tropical fruits and flowers. Sadly, it didn't quite live up to the nose on taste. Perhaps a bit past its prime, acidity and alcohol stood out ahead of the fruit. Lots of honey, apricot, and tropical fruits. I'm not going to score this, because I can't bridge the gap between the nose and the palate.

the recent notes below describe this well....lots of fun with lobster and crab...the suggested drinking window had me worried - this has some good years left but no reason to wait to drink my last bottle

Amazing deep burnished gold. Thick, almost oily appearance. Very concentrated, lots of immediate lychee fruit. Still plenty of fine acidity too. Minerals, other fruits, honeyed flowers. Great length. Fruit and flowers probably downplayed now compared to others earlier notes but still a fascinating wine. Big too, huge tears and plenty body.

Better than the last bottle. MAN that's good. Lychee and plenty of bite! Acidic, balanced, perfumed.... so tasty!

Somewhat dry, with characteristic lychee flavors. Not quite as good as the '97 Goldert, but lovely nonetheless.

First Tuesday Wine Group Annual Dinner. Wow, was this rich and exotic! Waves of tropical fruit and spice on the nose. Deep, penetrating gewurz on the palate. Long, persistent finish. Incredibly dense and concentrated, but perhaps a bit hot and out of balance. I was drinking this one without food, however; some nice spicy Asian food would probably bring out the best in this wine. I think this should probably be drunk over the next couple years.
