F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Ried Kellerberg

Riesling and Pinot Noir Lunch (Sun Wah - Chicago IL) : Double blind at Riesling/ Pinot Noir lunch. Rich and unctuous with floral charm. Bright and intensely fresh for its age with very good depth and length. Wonderful now, this will easily drink well for another decade+.

A “wow” wine in many respects. Golden yellow with amber touches. Incredible fragrance immediately apparent, but the herbal and earth tones underneath are equally exhilarating. Beautifully integrated into a seamless wine at its peak.

Dinner at Greenwood (Greenwood, Highland Park, IL) : Nose: The nose is showing maturity with a bit of honey but there is still excellent balance with crushed rocks, pears, peaches, apples, nectarines, saline, and yellow flowers. Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with crisp, high acidity. There is a lot of refinement and maturity to the feel while the acidity provides a nice spine. My last bottle of what has been a magnificent introduction to quality Austrian wines. I don't think I'd have wanted to keep much longer - don't think it was as good as last years. What stands out is the length and acidity. It just goes on. White and yellow fruits on the nose and start of palate. Honeyed in colour and on nose. Prefer it to Australian Rieslings.

I see from my old tasting notes that I said I loved this wine.. And yes I do! Rich nose, pineapple lychee tropical. Honey. But then such acidity to go with it on the palate. It's better than any Aussie Riesling I've had this year. And still going strong - Jancis had a 2015 drinking window, I say this will go fine until 2016+ easily

Eleventh Annual White Truffle Dinner (Chez Weber - Chicago IL) : Intense and ripe apple, pear and some baked apple with good spice and structure. Everything combines into an elegant package. Good now.

Good, if still lacking some integration at this point. Pink grapefruit, stony minerals and mild kerosene are the defining flavors. Medium bodied weight. Drunk with crab salad in an avocado half, the acidity and tartness proved to be a good complement to the food.

Very enjoyable, but was probably would have been more enjoyable a few years ago. Much more mellow than the FX Pichler I've come to love, with rose water, nutty hints, slight twinge of sweetness, oxidative notes, and missing the normal, big crispness (although nicely rounded out by some acid on the finish). Otherwise enjoyable... and so smooth. Very long finish. Really enjoyed the last glass! I do love the golden color these Rieslings have!

I last had this about 5 years ago, and time has really changed the wine. It's more burnished, less bright, and while ultimately showing interesting, evolved character, it is not as engaging a drink as it was in its youth. Gone is the electricity, to be replaced by serenity. It's still very good to drink, but just not what I was looking for from this wine. Should have drunk it up when I had the chance.

Lovely, white fruits, but still marked acidity. Had a 2005 Grosset Polish Hill a few night later and was fantastic to compare them. Drinking well now.

Fantastic wine. A little kerosene on the nose. Slightly sweet, but with a backbone of acidity there. Slight lychee on the nose. Had with Mussel broth.

Frankly I wasn't too impressed. Not too big fortunately (13.5%), slightly sweet, well-balanced but without the definition, precision and depth you might hope for in this outstanding vintage.

Leuchtendes grüngelb; sehr breite Nase mit Zitrusnoten, Melone, Kamille, Äpfeln; am Gaumen initial mit ordentlichem Pfefferl und grünen Anklängen, könnte fast als GV durchgehen; später frische Frucht, gepaart mit hintergründigen mineralischen Noten; langer Abgang; voller Weinmit viel Schmelz!

Drank alongside the '07 - this has the same power and richness but with a very different flavour profile, greener and almost Gruner-like with bright lime, grapefruit, aloe and some green bean notes instead of the ripe white fruited-ness of the '07. Keeps developing and evolving with air, gaining a sense of creaminess on the back end as the fruit, mineral and herbal elements merge together with time, although there's a little warmth on the finish that sticks out.

Really bright wine. Loads of acid with great flavors of granny smith apples, lime peal and oyster shell. Long and rich on the finish. Went great with a picked herring dish.

Austrian Riesling Tasting (Jeff Fisher's Apartment) : Austrian Riesling Tasting at Fisher's: More perfumed than most of the field. Sweeter, rounder fruit, but still ending with tangy acidity. Group thought this wine evolved into an almost Traminer-like aromatic.
