Domaine Dublere, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

This was a good example to me of “burgundy” so was happy how it showed with a couple of friends who don’t drink much of the stuff. Fully resolved and silky on the palate. Heavy on the sous bois aromas and good length and balance to the deep red fruits. I’ve always found Dublere to be in the pretty good camp. No duds and nothing exciting.

First Wednesday Wine Club (Napoli in Bocca, Haberfield) : "Served Blind. Medium minus intensity aromas are perfumed, showing red berry, sweet spice, smidge of earth. Simple nose. Medium plus intensity acidity, juicy, tight tannins are quite silky textured, red berry fruit, slight sweet spice, a little simple but travels long and is balanced. Nice. Burgundy, 10-15years old from a cooler vintage, possible Chassagne? 1er cru level."

This is drinking beautifully tonight shortly after opening with an abundance of rich, penetrating, earthy, tarry, dark red fruit, almost with the intensity of strawberry fruit roll ups. There’s lots of sous bois, some Asian spice notes and perhaps floral undertones. The deep and intense fruit is juxtaposed delightfully with the fairly delicate, elegant mouthfeel. What a charmer!!

Getting more interesting as it ages. Very soft for a Chambertin, fruit very bright and still primary.

Served double blind at a dinner; this led people to guess all sorts of thins. It's very bright on the nose, almost exuberant, and there's a bit of a warm vintage feeling to it with a touch of extraction. However, also some earth on the palate, and this is drinking well. A 2009 Roty village that was opened non-blind right after suddenly seemed similar! A very nice wine and good for the price. Dublere are rarely profound, but often delicious.

This bottle has particularly unpleasant prune notes that dominate on the palate. I know this parcel of Charmes Chambertin passed to another notable vigneron in '10. As per evaluations of that wine over those years, it continues to be problematic.

As usual, this is a delightful Charmes with soft, delicate, penetrating red fruit with abundant earthy, sous bois notes and perhaps some very subtle hints of tar. This was drinking really well almost immediately after opening.

Pnp. Color is an ruby orange. Nose is like being slapped across the face with a decomposing tree branch from the forest floor, a full spectrum of umami scents with mushrooms, decomposing leaves, moss, and cedar predominately, with a topnote of something herbal reminiscent of rosemary or pine with pinches of nutmeg and cinnamon. Ripe berry aromas and flavors with some sweet spice and braised meat. More mature than I would ever expect from 2009 Grand Cru. I will drink my remaining bottles in the next 5 years, which is very early for Grand Cru in this vintage.

Once again, this is delightful and drinking very well. Tonight, this was a soft, round feminine Charmes displaying good depth and complexity to the pretty red fruit, earth, Asian spice(especially star anise) and sous bois notes. The tannins on the longish finish are soft and still abit chalky. Quite delicious.

The Godfather Turns Sixty: Go Big or Go Home - Rousseau, Margaux, Lynch, a Trio '02 Champagnes and More! (La Belle Vie, Mpls) : Dark red color. PNP, 70ml pour over 2hr plus. Just a bit reduced initially, but blows off and shows nice red currants, sour cherry. Tart and sour red fruits, some earthy notes on the palate, firm but approachable tannins and a bit of sauvage quality. 91+pts.

This is really excellent tonight with penetrating dark red fruit, earth, sous bois, baking spice, a subtle tarry nuance and very soft tannins on the long, long finish. Not a power house, but impeccably balanced and nuanced. Delicious and drinking beautifully with 2 or 3 hours of air.

Nose was awesome, right after opening. Took a couple hours for the wine to settle down and give some of the nose on the palate. Very elegant Charmes, not a powerhouse by any means. Probably a couple years short of prime time, but very drinkable now.

This was drinking beautifully tonight after 3 or so hours of air with an expressive nose of intense red fruit, earth, sous bois, some Asian spice and asphalt, all of which carried seamlessly through to the palate with rich, penetrating flavors and a long satisfying finish. This is very much a wine of finesse that's ready to go right now but also tastes like it has a long life ahead of it.

Le Serbet/ Becky Wasserman's 35th Anniversary Celebration (Château de Sully - Southern Burgundy) : Red and black berry flavors and aromas with some sauvage hints. Moderate intensity, but very good balance and textures. Good now.

Pinots with Warso : Drinking beautifully after a couple of hours of double decanting. Of tonight's wines this had the lightest mouthfeel but the most depth and complexity. Bright red fruit, sous bois, earth and a minerally spine. Delicious.

This is drinking beautifully tonight after about 2 hours of double decanting. Bright, clean red fruit with admirable depth and length. The earth and sous bois notes have picked up some subtle tarry undertones that lend some interesting nuance. All in all, this is quite nice, and while it does have a youthful feel, it seems to be completely open for business.

Flickinger "Significant Cellar" Tasting...the New Releases (Chicago, IL) : Lots of fresh red berry aromas, some spice hints along with a touch of animale. Very forward and fresh, and drinking very nicely now given modest tannins and power.

This was drinking beautifully after about two hours of double decanting. The nose was expressive with red fruit and earthy and floral notes. On the palate are flavors of rich red fruit with sous bois undertones in a softer Charmes style. There's excellent, if not quite impressive, depth and complexity going on here with a long, mouth coating finish. This is quite delicious tonight.

Seriously open for business. Medium garnet in colour, but with beautiful clarity and as expressive a nose as one could wish for in a Grand Cru: Strawberries, raspberries and redcurrants with a lick of bramble and the beginnings of that leather/undergrowth aroma of secondary characteristics.
