Il Borro, Polissena Sangiovese, Toscana

A lovely sangiovese here. Plenty of red berry fruit flavours just before full ripeness.That means quite alot of acidity and even some tartness, often the hallmark of the grape variety. Floral notes enrich the experience, futher enhanced by earthiness. Tasting this explains why in blind tastings the experts often find it difficult to distinguish between sangiovese and nebbiolo as it has the colour, the acidity, blood orange note and tannins of the northern italian variety. No mistake: a great sangiovese.

Opaque purple brown. Aroma of anise, smoky oak, leather and faint dark cherry. Palate entry with silky tannin, strong hawthorn and licorice. Mid-palate of juicy dark cherry, clove and cinnamon. Short finish of earthy, musty oak. Soften tannin after last tasting 6 years ago, but still way too alcoholic sweet (14.5%), and too big body. One dimensional and unbalanced.

Nose of strong fruit (blackberry, raspberry) with a touch of balsamic vinegar. Mouthfeel is medium-to-full-bodied, with strong acid and tannin. Shows strong flavours of dark fruit (blackberry, blackcurrant) and green herbs (parsley, oregano).

Color: Pale brown with brick-brown rim. Aroma: Hawthorn fruit, wild strawberry, alcoholic hot, eucalyptus. Palate-Entry: Buttery, alcoholic, licorice. Mid-Palate: Oak, strawberry jam. Finish: Gripping tannin, grape pips, hint of butterscotch. A highly acidic but thin wine, alcoholic, with strong hawthorn fruit aroma and taste.
