Altesino, Rosso di Montalcino

Brick red, aromatic and in need of some air! Improved markedly over 2 hours, but never really took off. Medium finish and typical Sangiovese acidity.

After 30 minutes, this lovely RDM blooms with thyme, potpourri and tomato leaf. Red currant and sun-dried tomato dominate the front palate while leather and cured meat linger on the medium length finish.

Another quaffable RdM that improved over two days, gaining some weight and some character in the mid-palate...but not as exciting as the Ciacci or the Mocali from a few days back. A perfectly serviceable Sangiovese though.

A ruby garnet hue that opens with tomato leaf and red fruit aromas. Red currant and sun-dried tomato flavors up front while leather, clove and sandalwood linger on the finish. Higher acidity that balances nicely with the fruit and medium density.

Pale ruby, delicious wine. Nose has cherry, woodsy tones, floral qualities. Tannin on the low side, great acidity, balanced. On the lighter side of sangiovese. Would buy more at that sale price (I think it was under $20).

First impressions are light colour with very little nose. Second impressions are of a medium bodied offering with overtones of leather, structured tannins and zesty acidity.

Similar in color to the ArPePe Rosso I just tasted. Floral nose, with red fruits - pretty effusive nose for a humble Rosso. Primarily red fruits, but some black in the mix as well - less acidity than the ArPePe, although still adequate. Drinking well right now.

13.5% - Clear, med to pale garnet - slightly bricking hue / clean, med+ intensity - mixture of red berries and black cherries, earthy, smoke, citrus (orange peel), black tea, balsamic reduction / dry, med to high acidity, med+ tannin, med+ intensity, med length. 88+

Sixth vineyard on my 2017 Montalcino trip. 2014 was a weak year and this Rosso shows it. Light ruby red with soft nose. Subtle first taste with hint of strawberries and soft finish. Smooth wine but little body or complexity, not that exciting.

A little thin on the pop-n-pour, but now that it's had a chance to open up, it's really starting to shine. Dark dusty cherries, with zingy acidity. I should save the rest of the bottle to see how it's doing tomorrow, but it's been a long week ....

Light in color, small red fruit on the palate, light medium bodied. This goes very well with a pizza or charcuterie. Wait 2 years, still a little lively

Good qpr from bad vintage... didn't last well overnight when poured into half bottle and put in fridge overnight, which suggests near term drinking window

13.5% - Clear, med to light ruby / clean, med+ intensity - raspberry, balsamic reduction, forest floor, black tea / dry, med+ acidity, med body, med+ fine grained tannin, med to pronounced intensity, med+ length. Such a reliable Rosso di montalcino I can count in every single vintage so far....

At the winery with Lorenzo: Nice perfumey aromatics, SG red notes, light balsamic, sweet roses. Lovely aromas on this. Body is a bit light though, mid-palate a bit weak, with anise, rustic, hots, lots of grip in finish. Nose: 92 Mouth: 88.

5th vineyard of Montelcino trip - Altesino - beautiful setting on the north side of Montelcino with nice view of village. Medium nose, early hint of cherries. A bit soft and even flat first taste, mostly ripe cherries. Smooth finish quite nice, but clearly 2014 showing it was a difficult year.

The fruits on the nose tend to the darker side of the equation, but a floral perfume nicely offsets those attributes, keeping it fresh overall. Without a doubt the nose is the best part of this wine, as the palate, with its supple entry, falls a bit flat and modestly tannic. Medium-bodied, with avg(-) acids, this shows a touch of sour on the final. Needs 6-12 months in the bottle to come together (as much as it's likely to). There …

Nose of sour cherry, cranberry, and oak. Medium-to-full body in the mouth, with tart cherry. Hot, dried out, too much oak. Drink over the next few years.

2014 vintage

Decent Rosso with dark cherries, soil, mint, some chocolate, dark red, light but present tannins and moderate acidity. It's lacking structure but it's enjoyable and was only $17. I prefer other Rossos comparable in price but it's definitely good.

Altesino Winemaker Dinner (La Pizza Fresca Ristorante) : Coiled, tight wine but with a nice mineral lift. Hint of mint on the nose. Flavor of dark strawberry, wood. A good wine to enjoy in a few years; not a 'baby brunello' though.

Ruby colored. Bright berry, cassis and plum notes. Well balanced. A very solid wine for the price! ($15)
