It has improved over time, still a solid balance. Lots of fruit still there, good structure, and soft tannins. Seems it has still life despite of Cotes Du Rhone Village. A great value for the price, probably not much around to buy.

Deep red purple colour with some fading at rim Spicy, stewed plums, some old woody notes, Very alcoholic and spicy, like a young vintage port, but fruit has faded and it is drying out a little, herbal and medicinal, drying tannins and finishs short I don’t think this is going anywhere, it now tastes a bit boozy and rustic but it’s perfectly enjoyable especially, I imagine, with some rich food.

Seems to have lost some of its primary fruit and is more integrated now. Does not come across as so much of a monster. Dark fruit delivers a grapey quality. Still has a fairly firm grip.

A private lunch (Restaurant Inter Scaldes **, Kruiningen, Netherlands) : Mainly Grenache, Syrah and a little bit of Mourvèdre. Big and deep, spicy fruit balanced by a lovely minerality, fresh and vibrant in spite of the weight, sappy, lovely tannins, good length.

This big wine definitely packs a punch. Paired very poorly with a tomato-based pasta dish; wine came across as excessively, nauseatingly sweet. Much better on its own and settled down with air too I think. Has a creamy core of dark fruit.

Super-silky mouthfeel. I don't remember the first bottle being quite so big but this wine is no wallflower. The trouble with it is the 14.5% alcohol which flares up in a wall of heat and burns on the way down. It even gave me heartburn the first night. The firm tannins and deep earthiness are appealing but I wish this thing were toned down. A lot.

Lots of dark fruit and sweetness. A little hot on the palate. Easy drinking except for slight bitter after taste. Would be great with some dark meats or heavy sauces -- not recommended for solo drinking.

Drank over two nights. First night very rich and extracted with alcohol on the end. Second night much better integrated but still too extracted for me. Good if you like the style.

FP and DV both brought a bottle to TWS. Decanted a half hour ahead. Inky purple color. Good blackberry on the nose, and a very strong aroma of toast, along with some rubber. Tannins made the mouthfeel really drying. So this is one we'd really like to have tried down the road a few years, letting the tannins resolve/dissipate. Foolishly, we drank the second one as well. Toast aroma was consistent, as were the drying tannins. Love the Omar Khayyam …

Decanted 1 hour. Very dark purple color. Nose of blackberry liqueur, with a touch of wood. Spicy blackberries, with a very rich mouthfeel. Coating the mouth, and hanging around for 30+ seconds. Very nice wine, and a great QPR at $18.

Lovely dark purple in the glass. Dark fruit with an edge of minerality. Smooth tannins. Good acidic grip. Great food wine.

Inky full bodied wine with lots of black fruit, chalk and full round tannins. Long lasting finish, begs for robust, acidic foods that can stand up to a big wine.

The '09 CdRs are showing a lot of spine and this one is no different. Ripe fruit, powerful and grippy on the finish. No rush to drink.

Decanted about 2 hours. Rich and ripe fruit on the nose - mainly blackberry and cherry, with secondary aromas of licorice, mocha, and tar. Creamy and soft on the palate, it has a since mineral edge around the cherry and blackberry flavors. The chocolate comes on in the middle, and it finishes with nice earthy flavors.

I love the explosion of fruit on first encounter, red, deep, intense, but not jammy or syrupy. There is plenty of tannin on the mid and back palate, but not harsh, so you get a long, complex finish. I'm ready for more.
