Soltész Eger Egri Bikaver (Klasszikus)

Fruity, high acidity, low tannins, mild oak, decent for drinking with food, a bit too acidic on its own. Otherwise inoffensive.

Known as bulls blood by the locals but also by the British who, I recall, drank it in prodigious quantities as a cheap red wine in the early 1980’s. Pale ruby, translucent. Nose of espresso coffee, raspberry, redcurrant, charcoal, some blackberry but red fruit dominates. The palate has raspberry, redcurrant fruit and a distinctive bitter sweet espresso kick to it on the mid palate. Nice balance, good flavours and a lovely freshness on the finish.
