I like this, and it could probably age another decade, but wanted a wine for grilled burgers for my end of summer dinner. I would say that three years probably helped the fruit, as the tannin receded a bit. They won't be bottling PS on its own anymore at Rockpile, which is a shame, since I have always enjoyed it. Sloes, blackberries, some leafiness.

Still some great fruit and great structure. For a 13 year old bottle it's in surprisingly great condition. The cork was a bit soft and had significant crystallization on it but almost no sediment and needed no decanting.

With Korean style ribs, thought this would be a good wine to cut through the fat and match the spice. Not wrong. But this is still hard, needed about 1/2 hour to 1 hour to relax a little. I stand by my comments from two and a half years ago that this is a bit wine and deserves time; I also stand by most of those notes re: flavors, although I think the fruit is a little more settled down …

Clay Mauritson doesn't always bottle this as a varietal wine. '04 was up to his standards and it shows. If you like the animal, blockbuster tannin style of PS, this is your wine. I do, esp with the right meal, usually rich lamb that needs the tannin to peel the fat off your teeth. Decanted a good couple hours before drinking, but this could use more air and more cellar time. I ordered four of these and due to the wine shipping laws in the Peoples Republik of Kentucky they had to be delivered to my sister in West Virginia. She wasn't home and the temperature was over 100 degrees the three days they rode around on the brown truck. All four corks exhibited "leakage" .
