It's Always Sunny (Mostly) Steve Alley Presents the Rhone Valley (Vintage Wine Storage, Metric Blvd, Austin, TX 78758) : Enjoyed at a wine tasting event covering the French Rhône. Made of 100% Marsanne from a number of different terriors, whole cluster pressed and aged on lees 10 months. Aged in a combination of Demi-muids, barrels, and stainless. Aromatic and flavorful with balancing acidity. Lots of notable mineralality. Should age well. Long finish. Excellent.

60-70% aged in demimuids of which 10% is new oak. 2-3 months of batonnage. 100% marsanne Fun to try a 💯 Marsanne. Gold colour. Complex nose with lanolin, quince, ginger, acacia, and bruised pear. Like an orchard in your mouth. Peach, dried apricot, quince, acacia, dried figs long finish with a touch of almonds. Minerality is everywhere. Superb length and finish. All in balance. Exceptional wine. It comes across as oily and waxy but without the heavy weight. So interesting …

Ripe orchard fruit, spices, minerality and some tertiary. Bold, rich and showing some oxidation with just enough acidity to add some liveliness (personally I prefer wines with a bit more acidity). Quite a bit of bitterness on the finish. Very nice wine, but not my preferred style. Deep gold colour. Pronounced aromas of baked apple, ripe peach, ripe pear, cinnamon, honey, hay, marmalade, dried flowers, green almonds, crushed stone, salinity. Pronounced palate. Full body, medium (+) acidity, long finish.

A very approachable drink now. Need to enjoy this at just below temperature and not too cold. An aroma to lighten the soul with voices of summer and early autumn singing through the glass - mango, lychee and perhaps a hint of tobacco. A powerful body with a sense of purpose and lovely flavour profile. Not a long acidity so not one to go the distance. A bold finish with explosions of honey. Drink now to 6+ years.

This was delightful tonight with an abundance of cool, green orchard fruit, bright acidity, some baking spice notes and firm minerality throughout. The depth and concentration was commendable. Overall, quite nice with lots of years ahead of it.

Medium plus nose shows lemon peel, almond, kiwi, golden pear. Palate is nicely expressive, balanced, rich fruit but saline acidity, still young (and a little cold for me), but complexity is there and should age beautifully.

Medium gold, almost sauternes like. On the nose, some remarkably fresh stone fruit, apricot, nectarine, blossom as well as some dried almost stewed apple and pear. Even some bready biscuit notes. Lots of tertiary, almonds and honey. Very pretty and complex. Well balanced on the palate, medium body, alcohol and acidity with good lingering finish.

First I had from this vintage. Once again prototypical nose of citrus and chalky mineral. Rich citrus mouth feel and has years of life ahead of it. The 16 is at a better spot now

100% biodynamically farmed Marsanne from Chante-Alouette, Le Méal and Les Murets lieu-dits . Fermented partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in 600-liter demi-muids. Aged in demi-muids (60-70%; 90% used for once, twice or three times, 10% new) and stainless steel tanks (30-40%). 14% alcohol. Tasted blind. Luminous yellow-green color. The nose feels complex, rich and harmonious with slightly toasty aromas of apple jam and ripe apricots, some creamy oak tones, light floral notes of chamomile and apple blossom, a …

Amazing saltiness at the end of the mouth for such a big white, nice bitterness bringing freshness. Wine could age at least 3/4 years more but showing great at the moment. Always more impressed by Chapoutier whites than reds.

Wow, this is such an impressing and full-out vibrant white 100% Marsanne Hermitage from Chapoutier. Emerging deep golden, slight green reflections in appearance. Lovely nose featuring quince marmelade, tropical fruits, mixed bag of nuts - primarily almonds, lime, honey and hints of butter and lemoncurd. Palate is superbly full-bodied, lots of energy and complexity, flavours echoing nose with particular chewiness and roundness, m+-acidity, freshness, finishing long and on a saline-dry and nutty note. Charming!

French road trip, mainly Rhône valley; 9/4/2022-9/18/2022 : From open 75cl in Chapoutier tasting room in Tain L‘Hermitage. 100% Marsanne, 30% new oak, 14% alc. Big, “important” nose with quite tropical fruit (papaya?); large-bodied, oily-textured entry with attractive bitterness; mid-palate is thinner at this stage of development, quite neutral-tasting, papaya-edged; excellent long, honeyed-bitter finish. V. good now, should master the usual transformation to nutty smoothness on schedule, around 2026-28. Just over 49 EUR at cellar door. 91P

Dark gold/bronze in the glass, with an oxidative note on the nose. Bone dry on the palate - I don't love this, but it is interesting to say the least. Hard to imagine what you might pair this up with from a food standpoint, but on it's own it would certainly spark a few conversations. I have never really been a fan of Rhone whites, but I could drink this.

(From magnum) Bright gold. Pronounced bouquet of white fruits, dried apricots, not overly mature - a real delight and surprise at our Christmas table complimenting a dinner of baked ham & baked cod. Beautifully balanced long, holding up. Muscular. Chante Aloutte in it’s 20’s is a marathon runner in her sixties. Sinewy. Still something to behold and look at.

A great example of how good white wines can be if winemakers allow the terrior to speak clearly. Maybe a little past its peak but still very lively nose of white peach, flowers and mineral notes. Huge mouth coating body, full and rich. Perfect amount of oak to balance acidity. A wine that should be decanted and served cool not cold.

No formal tasting note, had at a DAWGS offline on 07/12/08. Peach, flowers and mineral is what caried this wine. Great nose, great mouthfeel I think this wine will still go a few more years but why wait it is drinking very well right now.

Golden color. Slight hint of oxidation- and "lake water" smell on nose per Lewy. Fruits beginning to fade, but still some hints of ripe tropical fruit. Wild weird stuff, not as elegant and complex as Chave's or Guigal's Rhone whites- but really nice for the price...

Candlewax and light fruit, yes. But it's also one of those wines that shoots to the back of the throat so that the entire palate is coated with differet flavours. Past it's prime? I cannot say, but it is excellent now.

Exotic pineapple, candle wax, and yellow flower notes. Very ripe with a full, thick mouthfeel. Somewhat flabby and overdone on the palate. Resin notes. Not the best stored bottle, and should have been drunk a couple of years back.

Deep golden color. Beautiful, rich nose of warm butter, honey, roasted nuts and spice playing off the generous fruit. Sometimes even showing a floral quality. Quite thick and mouth-coating. Moderate acidity, but it still did well with food. Relatively short, but very nice finish - which didn't matter much because I couldn't wait to pick up the glass again to swirl and sniff... Wish I'd bought more of this.

Slightly floral aromatic start with modest fruit. Not much apparent fruit on palate, but tightly wound and structured. perhaps this is in the very typical quiet phase common with Hermitage blanc. Evolves, but never really softens.
