Dark ruby, primary with small red fruit, some forest floor, no sweet oak unlike many of its German PN peers. On the palate it is rather structured with somewhat firm tannin structure, very high acidity which helps to keep the wine light feeted at this stage. Mineral and good length. Feels too young at the moment, will wait my 2nd bottle for other 5-8 years. My experience with Becker tells me these wines begin to sing after 10 years or …

Had this bottle over three evenings. Opened it to taste and let it develope overnight but it still felt very tight and unbalanced on night two. It finally showed its qualities on the third evening. On the nose a complex array of cedar, cloves, forest floor, meatiness and cherries. Very structured, smooth tannins and present acidity that makes the wine seem very lean. Very elegant, complex and interesting. I assume it would profit from some more years in the cellar.

24x Pinot Noir : Tasted blind. This is my third Becker Pinot Noir and there is a consistent theme in these wines: tons of oak, hard oak tannins and too much extraction. This was drinkable but not at all enjoyable. TN: The nose is marred by an unwelcome note of nail polish. On the palate, it presents an odd mix of candied red berries and green notes, resulting in a rather strange aromatic profile. It feels overly artificial and highly …

- Special fruity flavours, somewhat bacony, soapy, - Too little balance on the palate, special flavour, somewhat cheesy. This is a wine that you may not understand immediately, but at first glance it is simply special. Masculine, still lots of tannins. - 88p

Garnet color. Nose of mushrooms, cherries, spice. Medium+ acidity, cherries, cocoa beans, long ending with a touch of vanilla. I would not consider it super complex, but it’s very good and refined on the edges. Drinks very well now with one hour decant. Enjoyed at Restaurant Olo in Helsinki with both fish and meat, and went very well with both. I like Spätburgunder wines because they are refined and straightforward. This delivered fully.

Best wine of a pretty large Pfalz pinot flight. Super balanced and complex. Velvety notes of red fruits, tannic grip and sour note. Integrated oak. Will improve over the next dexade.

During a merchant tasting, so only brief impressions. In contrast to Fürst and Meyer-Näkel, the Becker wines (Schweigen, St.Paul, Heydenreich) were really rustic. Hard work today, may be time will help. 88-89

Slow ox for 4 hours and followed for another 3. This is like an AMG sedan. A robust extracted powerhouse with firm tannin, dark fruit and strong spices, but lacking in floral characteristics. A bottle of precise German engineering, that is lacking in finesse. PnP may have been a better option. :) 89

2012 Friedrich Becker Sankt Paul Spätburgunder was expressive, evolving and mineral-driven. The developing Pfalz Pinot Noir was clear and medium ruby in colour with traces of sediments. Freshly uncorked, it revealed expressive aromas of ripe dark cherry, bramble, rose and juniper. Underneath were menthol, sweet vanilla, pepper and liquorice spices. Over three hours of in-bottle aeration, the obvious oak artefact dissipated, and complexities of tilted soil and smoked game emerged. The mouthfeel was dry and medium-bodied, with a medium level …

Branded as a "monopole" coming from Schweigen Sonnenberg the Sankt Paul 2016 features a ruby colour fading to amber at the rim. Beautiful aromatics of wild strawberry and cornelian cherry wrapped around notes of sweet spices and brewed tea. Refined yet grainy tannins support the vivid fruit with great concentration and an elegant texture. So long and charming on its aftertaste.

World of Pinot Noir Tasting (13 Pinots from Burgundy, Germany, New Zealand, Oregon and California); 12/5/2020-12/6/2020 (Zoom) : Very light in color (lightest of the 12 Pinots tonight). Pale Ruby. Nose of sous bois, vanilla, some smoke. Ripe cherry fruit with some orange peel. Finishes with some vanilla and caramelized notes and a touch of heat. Seems a bit forced in terms of ripeness and oak, but still fine.

- Blind tasted - Nose: Elderberry, raspberry, liquorice, woodsy intense aromas, sour cherry at the highest degree. Accompanied by cinnamon and vanilla. Few mature notes. With time a hint of smoky BBQ sauce crystallizes. Also spicy and more and more vanilla with time. - Mouth: High acidity, straightforward, the sparkling acidity stands out. It shimmers through somewhat unripe, greenish almost bitter (which is not disturbing for me), a touch of perfume. Medium long finish. Similar to the nose in terms …

Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: Pre-Easter tasting (Private Location) : Perfect example for a German Pinot Noir imo. The nose is a mix of strawberry and raspberry mixed with a good portion of vanilla and a nutty component (way too much oak imo). Gets better with time but absolutely not my preferred style. Better on the palate although the oak also dominates here. The acidity plays on a medium level. Harmonic mouthfeel, good length. Without a doubt this wine has …

Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: Pre-Easter tasting (@Private location) : Tasted blind. Clear, pale garnet color. Clean nose, that needed time to open up. At first hard to detect: lots of new oak, leather, some butter, dense and compact. Later with some time and air fresh herbs, spices, strawberry and rosehip. Quite complex, but mainly driven by oak. On the palate dry, medium (+) acidity, well integrated, medium+, ripe tannin. Some vanilla, herbs, classic German Pinot fruit (strawberry, some raspberry), …

Disappointing. This is exactly like the mediocre Burgundian pinots one purchases for 30 EUR and then keeps asking himself: what on earth costs 30 euros on this one? Except this is German and costs 50 EUR. Anyway, drank it through 3 days; first day disjointed, with acidity living separate lives vis-a-vis everything else. Day 2 was relatively best, then it was a decent, middle-of-the-road pinot with cleanliness, some density, good acidity, and some earthy-mushroom-y characteristic, and on day 3 it …

Floral aroma, rose and berries, distinct but rather faint, with elegance not sweetness lasting for 3-4 hours. The taste of medium strength has its tannin rather smooth. Both the aroma and taste convey the characters of really good burgundy wine. Don't know if this is the right drinking window. Will try another bottle 2 years later.

on the nose you find loads of red berries, especially wild raspberries, earth, and a fine leathery tone. Elegant on the palate rather than complex, long and almost understated. Very nice balance between fruit and acidity. Really nice, beats many 1er Cru Burgs and some GCs as well for that matter. Not sure how long it will last though, drink within a couple of years.

Rudi Wiest Tasting (Republique Los Angeles) : Wow. One of the highlights of the tasting for me. A little cloudy, but beautiful ruby in color. Amazing, perfumed nose. Soft on the palate with earthy notes and great minerality as well. Very soft tannin on the finish.

Another step up compared to Herrenwingert, but also stylistically different. Smoky on the nose showing dark cherry fruit, earthy notes and spices. The oak is already pretty much in the background. On the palate really grippy with firm but ripe tannins, here the oak is a bit more present still. Great intensity of fruit. Not heavy at all, lots of acidity and a wonderful mineral streak carrying the long and intense finish. Too young but very promising. 94-95+

My wife falls head over heels for this, and so do I ... This is Pinot Noir in lovely shape. It's light but not void of power, and above all it mixes purity with complexity in a way that i think only Pinot, Nebbiolo and Grenache succeeds with. Nosewise this starts with red currant, extremely light cherries and wonderful strawberries. Herbs, licorice, a feeling of walking through a pine forest in spring. Yes, the oak adds a touch of very …

Quite expensive (circa 70 euro), however, maybe the best pinot nor I have ever had. Very elegant but I would not call it complex. Maybe a bit of a crowdpelaser. I have not had a pinot noir that smells and taste so much raspberries since I had a bottle from New Zeeland some 3-4 years ago. Give it 1 hour of air in order for the fruit to show and to integrate properly.

And yet another bottle that's a shy shadow of its former glory. I'm starting to feel like I got ripped off, like I got suckered into liking this wine thinking there was stuffing behind all that toasty oak. Nope. Just vegetables, hay, asparagus and some cranberry. Another bottle that just doesn't seem like its former self. Not flawed, but not the Schweigen masterpiece this has been in the past. I suspect this wine has either shut down hard, or is characteristic of a greater flaw...I hope it's the former case, but the latter raises suspicions that much of what makes German Pinot so delicious YOUNG is the deft use of oak to mask the lack of full pheno/physio development. Who knows? Of the last five or …
