Hofgut Falkenstein Krettnacher Ober Schäfershaus Riesling Spätlese Trocken #18

Refreshing, light-bodied, and also complex, this shows significant soil/mineral elements underneath typically Saar lime and green apple fruit. Where this shines is in the mid-palate and finish where it has more weight and depth than expected from the light/bright start. The minerality turns almost salty on the finish, and combined with the lime fruit it’s a mini-margarita from the Saar!

A really gorgeous dry riesling. Great balance and such intense minerality. Probably even better in a few years.

Wines with friends (Washington, DC) : This was so delightful. Flinty, steely, brisk, salty, with the best limes, kiwi and ruby red grapefruit, with honey and white flowers. Minerals galore. I'd love to see this in five or eight years.

A beauty. Aromas of fresh citrus, crunchy apricot, chalk dust, whispers of ginger, iris, white pepper, mint, sage. Lively and fresh on the palate, silky and buoyant, gorgeous acid cut, clear stony notes through the finish. This is always Falkenstein's most powerful trocken, but it is a delicate feather compared to many GGs. Hard to say how long you should hold this, as it is superb now, but it will surely be worth following another 5 years, probably longer.

Lime, lime, lime.. let kalket, plasthandske. Knastør, høj syre, men med fin modenhed på frugten og medium+ længde.

Lidt anonym næse med hyld og plastichandske. Lime, limeskal, grape, pomelo. Umoden stenfrugt. Flintet, stål. Knastør! Medium afslutning

Drank side-by-side with the 2019 Krettnacher Altenberg Spätlese trocken in Grassl Mineralité glasses. Compared to the Altenberg, this wine has more citrus and stone fruit character. Ebullient nose of grapefruit, apricot, honeysuckle, and lemon peel, with yellow flower tones completing the bouquet. On the palate the wine is bright and fresh, with that trademark racy acidity, and there is a good balance of citrus and chalky minerality on the finish. Quite new both to the producer and Mosel wines and I do have a bit of trouble with residual sugar in my wines, even if formally Trocken there can be quite a bit more than 0, even up to 9 gr/l although I don’t know the facts here. Gorgeous nose of lime juice and lime oil, as well as smoky flint, iris, apricot, peach and peppery greens. A sharp attack, is followed by a juicy and citrusy midpalate, then a super mineral and dry finish. Intense and staining, but not the least bit ponderous or tiring. A classic. We had this next to the 2019 Niedermenniger Herrenberg Kabinett trocken 2019 (sorry, don't know the cask) and it was quite in another league.
