Fantastic mature bottle of St Joseph from Chave. Aromas are intense and nuanced with meat, smoke, pepper and dried, mature black fruit. The palate is complex, engaging and still quite fresh. Perhaps a touch short in the finish, is the only nit to pick with this beautiful bottle.

Very nice wine, just a little past its peak. Not as strong a vintage as the 2001. Tannins fully resolved, good fruit concentration on nose, very evolved. slightly short on palate. Still an excellent wine

Cellared since release. I used to try to convince Gérard and Jean-Louis Chave that their estate Saint-Joseph was a wine that could age very well, but they were uninterested in hearing it. I came across three forgotten bottles of this last week while cataloguing my cellar. I was a little uncertain, as 2000, while good, was not a great year. Nevertheless, I have had excellent experiences cellaring Chave estate St-Jo, notwithstanding the Chaves' claims that it was a wine to be drunk young. Wow. This was special. Very well balanced. Wish I had taken notes while drinking this last night. Had this alongside the 2001 Cambon La Pelouse and 2005 Antelope Valley Reserve Merlot and this blew them out of the water. From what I recall this had a bit of barnyard/funk on it, black pepper on the midpalate, dark fruits, and herbs de Provence. A really lovely wine. I think this is peaking right now, so drink up! Natural cork; 12.5% abv.

Gorgeous wine that is a point in early maturity. Fennel seed, black olive, thyme and blackberries. This is fragrant, flinty northern Rhone wine at a very high level of accomplishment. Still some tannin to resolve but this is complete, complex and outstanding. Could improve further. Next in 2015.

Chave Dinner (Heirloom Cafe, San Francisco) : Lighter shade. Seductive nose of blackberry and anise. Light weight, good acidity. Holding up fairly well, but this does begin to attenuate and really lose fruit as it gains exposure to air.

boy do I like chave, this is open, cherry fruit, roasted meats, balanced on the head of a pin, perfect with steak now. no rush either, althousgh this bottle was stored perfectly since release, a delight to drink

Very forward nose showing a lot of roasted fruits. With air, a hint of black olives. While there's decent acidity, the palate is ripe. Roasted cherry/strawberry and plum. Some peppery mint as well. Quite boring.

this is totally on tonight, nose is typical tarry granite rhone, but the pallet is crushing, blueberries, dark cherry, leather, leaves, truffles, so silky smooth and long, tannins resovled, Wow!

classy northern Rhone wine - textbook blackberry with serious definition and ripeness but also noticeable acid cut. A hint of sur maturee. Tasted a couple of days after the Jaboulet 1997 St. Joseph, this was far more opulent, rich, refined and opulent. Absolutely no hurry on this wine - but certainly drink this before considering the Chave Hermitage! with Leigh, Andre, Skylar and Justine.

Good wine, typical gunpowder and smoke aromas with maybe a little leathery brett. Tart and juicy acidity in the mouth. Some tannin left, but very easy to drink. Should continue to drink well for a number of years.

Halloween wine, with a big pot of Beef Burgundy and noddles. This hasn't changed much since my last bottle 4 years ago. Dark purple ruby color. Wonderful leather, tar, smoked cherry, plum, earth, cassis, white pepper nose. Smooth and lush in the mouth, with tart berries, smoky leather, mineral, tar, dried herbs, licorice. Still firm dusty tannins...but even more well rounded then before. Nothing better with this dish than a beautiful Rhone!!!

First bottle and it was hitting on all cylinders. This wine is so pure with hints of cherry, horse, violets and smoky black tar, maybe baon. The taste is equally pure, long and silky. It paired ideally with a stuffed pork tenderloin with apples, walnuts and panceta. When to drink it? Old Huet, B. Mascarello & Chave at Dougherty's. (Dougherty's) : The estate bottling, not the “Offerus.” A really fun wine. Has beautiful sweetness and purity to the red, spicy fruit. Touch of licorice and earthy notes with enough acidity to keep things balanced and interesting. Not a complex wine, but thoroughly enjoyable and a great match with the duck breast. A-/B+.
