Northern Gevrey 1er (Zoom) : Gorgeous nose of maturing black cherry with meaty spice. Deliciously rich with textural complexity of round fruit and fine, still grippy structure. At peak and should hold for 5-10 years more.

Gevrey-Chambertin (Northside) 1er Cru Tasting (Chicagoland) : In 97/02/09/10 vertical. Very dark color. Very reductive start, SO2 never fully dissipated (despite being open 3 hours before serving), so I would suggest decanting. Once past all that reduction...there is so much here, coming across as both massive and texturally elegant (somehow) at the same time. I think this has further upside as more earthy nuance should/ will come through, but others thought it at its zenith right now. Only time will …

With Roast Capon at Christmas Dinner. Superb. Can't image this getting any better. Drink up and enjoy!

Let's Open Some Wines From 2002 (Palena - Washington, DC) : Had the sweet red fruit profile that Serafin Pinot tends to have. The oak was there, but not distracting. Though the palate was velvety with spicy red fruit and floral notes I found it somewhat boring...maybe a bit closed down?

Nice earthiness and dark fruit in the glass. Took about an hour to open up. Drinking well now.

Dinner at Browntrout (Browntrout - Chicago, IL) : Unlike my other bottles, this was in a bit of a strange place. The nose was a bit gassy at first, but soon dense berries and cherry flavors emerged with a touch of earth. The palate was super juicy and fat - probably would have thought that this was a Sonoma pinot - but as Phil pointed out, didn't have much in the way of a finish. Dunno if this is just …

Some funk on the nose. Earth, mineral. Nice balance with excellent acidity. One can enjoy now or cellar for a bit. It is medium weight and lacks depth of grand crus.

Lovely purity with great layers of red fruits and floral notes. A feminine wine, this is all about elegance and airiness. In a good place, but will improve for a while.

Beautiful nose of fresh red fruits, underbrush, earth and roses. One of those Burgundies that is just pure as can be. The fruit is perfectly ripe and fleshy but cool as can be. Balancing the fruit is delicate floral notes, with a vein of dirt and pine notes. I will say that while this is completely delicious, it isn't the most complex wine. Splitting hairs, I suppose, but worth mentioning.

China Club BYO (China Club, Hong Kong) : We had both raspberries and strawberries on this, with some noticing a metallic element. Moving towards earthy, funky tones but not quite bacon fat. Great length. Very enjoyable.

Smells like a musty barn...earthy, strawberries, dried grasses...not my thing, but I can understand why an over zealous salesman at Jeroboams in London forced this on me...

This had me at the first sniff. Wonderfully aromatic and balanced perfectly between the austere and the rich, carrying elements of both. There is the firm and rather austere structure and wrapped around it the nuances of the richer side of Burgundy with liquorice, farmyard, black fruit and spices. Feathery light in the mouth with the sensation that you are gulping down the very essence of the terroir. Really quite excellent.

Some initial funk on the nose that dissipated after about 30 minutes. Nice acidity and fruit. A well balanced Burg. Definitely on the young side and will benefit from additional cellar time.

Lovely open nose with reductive elements (not negative). Some toasted wood, mature red berries, cocoa powder and dark spices. Quite complex nose with many layers. Medium bodied, with good density. The palate is a bit more restrained han the nose, indicating that this wine is just opening up, but will reward more patience. Long clean finish. A good showing for Serafin!

Confrerie Burgundy Trip – Day 2 (Gevrey-Chambertin/Morey-Saint-Denis) : Intense first nose of roast, then undergrowth and cherries. Roast and cherries on the palate with fresh acidity and sandy tannins. Finishes a touch hot and green with medium to long persistence.
