Exactly why we love Trimbach so much Intense sweet nose of apples and apricot, giving the impression that the wine will be sweet, and the first zip almost gives the same feeling, like biting into a ripe red apple, right until the bone dry, steely finish. At the perfect age for drinking right now. Nobody pulls this off quite like this.

Electric, zippy and showing great complexity. The interplay of fruit and acid was on display. Perfect for those that like a dry Riesling. This is 13% ABV - very different stuff than its German counterparts. Complex and lively, this went very well with Indian fare. I was thankful this bottle was fully intact given the issues others seem to have with this cuvee.

Think it was faulty but might just be what aged riesling ends up tasting like. Is that the Petrol note? I don't know, but I'm not a fan.

Youthful and playful. A sprightly 17-year-old, there is still a lot of maturing to be had before this reaches its zenith. A slight off yellow, there is an inner glow that seems to indicate its age. I don't know about the petrol notes, a bit exaggerated from my perspective. You can decant it to get rid of it if you want to. But the nose is fresh citrus, green apple and some stone notes. The body is so fresh with …

The 07 is probably my favourite of all the CFE vintages I have had to date. It’s the only one that is wholly untouched by tropical ripeness - not even the slightest hint - instead delivering layers upon layers of malic acid. This might sound like a recipe for mouthwash but actually as that follows on to a very chalky texture with not a small amount of extract, and then a bit of apricot at the end, somehow it is …

Deep yellow. Strong mature petrol scents. Medium+ weight, excellent glycerine texture. Classic dry stone fruit followed by lime and a ton of closing soil. Terrific acidity. Superb showing tonight, totally ready.

Sourced from the Geisberg and Osterberg Grand Cru vineyards in Ribeauvillé, the Cuvée Frédéric Emile 2007 reflects the marl-limestone-sandstone soils and south-southeast exposure of these sites. The vines, averaging 45 years in age, yield grapes with remarkable concentration. Harvested by hand at optimal ripeness in late October, the grapes underwent gentle pressing and fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wine was vinified to complete dryness, with no malolactic fermentation, preserving its freshness and purity. Bottled in the spring following …

Medium yellow. Classic petrol and black tea. Round stone fruit, excellent acidity and intensity. Plenty left in the tank, which makes me think that the austere, stripped bottle I had 4 months ago was somehow flawed and an outlier.

This bottle was on fire tonight! 2007 drinkin wonderfully…riper pear, pineapple, and baked apple than previous go’s…still classic chiseled wet crushed rocks, chalky n salty slate dust, sour lemons, quince jelly…more vinous in fruit…the petrol is gassed up…integrated perfectly…speaks Alsatian fluently and in prime form…a total Rock Star wine!

Light yellow. No secondary aromas, just pure lemon and herb. Relatively lightweight and bone dry. One of the leanest and austere examples of this cuvée I've ever had. I really enjoyed it tonight but would probably advise drinking on the earlier side before the fruit drops out.

Despite the stellar vintage reputation the 07 CFE was inferior to the 11 from a more middling vintage sampled a few months ago. Not immediately pungent and actually very floral with not much citrus. Not overtly ripe/tropical but with lower acid levels than expected and that lassitude carried through to the finish. Would probably call this a Burgundy drinker’s Riesling, in that the quality and character hews more somehow to a Côte d’Or white than the extremes that I enjoy …

1/2, good cork. Medium hold. Quite developed, apple, burnt caramel, honey. Medium bodied, apple and honey, quite nice and plump and creamy, with a caramel edge, nice fresh acids, decent length. Hanging in there but probably better a few years ago.

Opened at Otto e Mezzo in HK. P&P and enjoyed with friends for HH. This was very good, and completely open for business upon first pour. Great balance of petrol versus fruit, strong and focused acidity but nothing out of proportion. Wonderful dry Riesling. Unfortunately, Trimbach's Rieslings are sometimes premoxed in my experience. I'm glad that this wasn't the case, and was performing extremely well. This wine is in a great spot right now, and would be very happy to …

A pale yellow/greenish color, nose after opening on petrol and mushrooms, with air it changed quickly to a perfectly clean and impressive stuff: citrus (lemon and grapefruit), some light petrol and a very nice salinity, the wine is dense, with high dry extract and impressive length. Still youthful.

Syrah Young and Old (Winchester) : The nose - oomph. Cut grass and citrus and so much going on. Will the palate spoil things? No! Lovely acidity, still lively but the acids are in line and there’s an almost richness to it. Sone discussion at the table - evidently these can be a lottery with premature advancement or even out and out pox. We had a winning ticket with this one. I think my #2 wotn.

Deep yellow. Stone fruit and a touch of oxidation upon opening which did not increase with air. Medium to full bodied. Dry, peach, decent acidity but overall, a lot more dull than a bottle last year. I'll have to try another bottle to sort out whether this is on the verge of collapse or tonight was just a poor, more advanced bottle. In any event, not that good although perfectly drinkable over the course of a meal. After being in …

Richer compared to the Mosel Riesling we had just before, and with obvious notes of kerosene. Bone dry. Would have been great with Chinese food, and had a few years left in it.

The nose started out quite restrained, but slowly revealed a ton of impressive persona. Stony earth, herbaceousness, leather, slight Cava-like rubber and florals. Dry and refreshing with clearly some years on it. Not a whole lot of fruit, but balanced, being strongly mineral-driven and acidic. Some yoghurt, cucumber peel and a hint of something nutty. Good length. Tasted blind and I thought this to be almost some 20 years younger than it actually was. Well, what a nice surprise!

Two Older Frederic Emile Rieslings (Yountville, California) : Light golden, much darker than the '85. Some nutty, oxidative notes were worrisome, but the wine hung in there and improved for a good 2 hours. Rich, dry yellow peach core with a hint of tropical fruit. Oily feel compared to the more ethereal '85, but admirably, this gained focus and precision with air. The glycerine gives it more of an impression of sweetness than its older counterpart, but I'd bet this …

Trimbach Frederic Emile Retrospective--1979 to 2001 (Absinthe Restaurant, San Francisco) : A 2004 library release. Lighter than the '96, but the second darkest colored wine. Wild, flamboyant nose with curry and coriander-like an Indian bazaar! Impression of sweeter yellow peach (? a tad of residual sugar) with a kernel of cyanic bitterness. Less acid, and an overall looser style that was like the '95. Quite exotic in the context of its more restrained brethren, but not heavy or overbearing.
