2011 Beaujolais Dinner (The Wolf - Oakland) : Someone at the table called this wine confected, but I would characterize it as grapey and young. There’s also a distinctive spiciness on the finish; I originally thought it might be from the influence of oak (someone at the table thought this wine saw barrique), but I did some research and apparently it only sees cement vats. An ample, large-scaled wine, this could use more time to reach its potential.

I agree with the plumminess of the dark fruit mentioned by another notes and there is also an menthol notes to the fruit as that sits next to black cherry. Silky but with a bit of structure underneath. Ready to go now.

Treads the line of a serious and playful Bojo well. Good structure behind the dark red fruit with a slight hint of plumminess. Impressive depth and length of finish for its level. Terrific value.

Muddled red. Light, brambly, tart red fruit, good acidity, and plenty of earth. Very good overall.

Shockingly unevolved at age 15, with ripe dark fruit and lots of chalky tannic structure. The tannins are well out in front of the fruit right now, making this not particularly enjoyable at the moment, even with food. I've read about older Beaujolais lasting many decades. This certainly has the tannic structure to do that, but I'm not sure the fruit concentration is there-- will there be anything left when the tannins finally resolve?

I’ve read some notes on ‘09s not aging well, but this is in a nice spot. Good acids, crunchy red fruits, a spicy/sandalwood notes. It’s ripe but not OTT. B+

Single blind tasting Deep Ruby with mild violet towards the rim, unfiltered Medium aromatics of cherry, rose. No oak. Medium + palate with medium + tannins and acidity. Dark blue fruit. Medium finish. The most amazing aspect of this wine is how well integrated the acidity, tannins and fruit are with a nice balance.

Outstanding, everything I want in a Beaujolais. Smokey dark fruit complimented by subtle notes of taught red fruit/ cranberry, tobacco leaf, gamebird and clove; masculine. Great mineral complexity that balances the medium-weight body. Toes the line between southern burgundy and rhone. Very good - Drinking great now.

Medium red center. At first, very tart cranberry, soil, and little mouth feel. However, with some air and slight warming, a softer black cherry aspect emerged along with limestone, herb, and excellent acidity. This is not at all in the more fleshy 2009 mold.

Bright and looks serious. Delicious. Lovely crunchy fruit but still silky with the complexity of a good quality village Burgundy. Even some spice. This is a relative bargain compared to some of the very average Burgundy being produced at much higher price points.

Still very young but getting better and more expressive. Tight structure, upright, darker red fruit, cherries. Very understated, hidden potential. This still needs time to unfold, but what a classy wine.

Beautiful nose of soil, autumn leaves, with red and blue fruit tones. These carry into the palate where it shows primary red fruit with good underlying structure. Good tension that balances the plentiful fruit well. Soil tones and a distant herbal note compliment this. This is utterly gulpable. Very Good - Drink or Hold

Complex nose of rosepetals, pepper, cherries, rasperries, oriental spices, mushrooms and forestfloor. Light bodied with a tremendous flavours diversity and intensity showing again same flavours as picked up in nose paired with a very strong iodine minerality. Excllent wine and excellent pqr.

This wine was still immature on opening, giving that somewhat watery feel on the tongue of a good beaujolais that haas not quite opened yet, Over several days, it developed some depth and showed a little fruit. Needs a few more years, imho.

Last bottle of, I think, eight. Excellent; with Foillard, top-tier Beaujolais, albeit differently styled. This bottle fits in with my growing sense that well-made Beaujolais matures over a long period, during which the plush young fruit first collapses, giving the wine a rotten vegetable quality, which passes away, leaving the characteristically high acid structure of the wine, shielding a deeper layer of fruit, which chemical processes bring into balance with the acids gradually. I've found this progression consistently in Vissoux …

Very much along the trajectory of my previous note but getting better and better. More fruit and tangy minerals with the tannin more relaxed, but present enough to provide structure and cut through food. Really exquisite wine. I'm glad someone continues a traditional Burgundian style elevage in Morgon.

Another lovely bottle: smooth, mellow, with the crystalline acidity of maturing Beaujolais and slightly ravishing dark fruit. Tannins in check. A pleasure to drink, and no rush: the wine shows much better on the second day. A wine of real stature and elegance.

Transparent in colour. Very finely woven in the nose. Red currant, raspberry, both as freshly shredded coulis with a bit of powdered sugar on top. Very direct and animating. In the mouth, it's also very direct, full of tension, but very harmonic at the same time, very fine as well, detailed. Long finish that is slightly tart. Grandiose, but still with potential.

This wine has improved and clarified since the last bottles. It's now clear, with scalpel-like acidity, fine tannins, and good fruit in proportion. A very fine, high-acid wine, from any appelation. Don't know if the last bottle was flawed, suspect they were transitioning an awkward developmental stage, which I'm starting to recognize in good cru Beaujolais. In any event, Beaujolais skeptics, enter here.

Dark deep black ruby color. The nose is impressive. Black small fruits, i don't recognize the usual nose of gamay. Its more complex for sure. In mouth it is big, nose didn't lie ! Long, large, its a stunning wine from Beaujolais. Fruity but not only, wood is being soft to underline fruit greatness. Drunk with boeuf bourguignon, the wine appeared to be one of the greatest value of this region to me.

Cassis/blueberry on the nose. Full bodied with fresh black fruit with enough fressness. A very good wine. On day two (kept in the fridge) it's even better. So in it's youth give it some air.

Nothing wrong here, but flat and unexciting for a Desvignes, and falling short of the promise of a couple of years ago. Doesn't signal hope for much further development, but stranger things have happened.

On opening, a swathe of sauvagité, which smooths with half an hour in the decanter, to give a suave, high-acid red that goes straight to the point with grilled steak. Nice now, but the decant is essential.

Deep primary ruby. Graphite and blackberry. Lean, tight and stony. No fat 2009 this-I think I might have guessed 2010. This should have a long life but is pretty unyielding right now even after decanting for a few hours.

2005 Morgons : Second bottle in one year. Medium to dark ruby red. In the nose, this is much more open than the last bottle, very elegant and complex, slightly spicy, cherries as well, harmonic, sensual and fine. On the palate, it's full, harmonic, spicy again, very young still, again quite complex and complete as well. Fine acidity, finely woven tannin that is very present though. The finish starts with slight bitter notes, but then moves towards minerality and tart …

Cellar Plan Beaujolais Tasting (Berry Bros & Rudd) : A substantially more serious effort than the "Cote du Py" cuvee which is made from old vines. Dark brooding fruit with almost meaty aromas dominate the nose leading onto a chewy tannic finish. Not very typical but interesting nonetheless.

Cellar Plan Beaujolais Tasting (Berry Bros & Rudd) : From the old vines of the Javernières cuvee to truly ancient vines (c. 140 years old) of Les Impenitents. This felt like a more refined wine in every aspect by comparison to the former cuvee. The fruit on the nose feels refined rather than opulent and a degree of grip and structure are present but not to an overpowering extent. Classy stuff. One to keep a while.
