Lemon, pear, fleeting hint of peach. Flint, chalk and salinity, with some freshness in mouthfeel. Off dry, somewhat juicy lingering taste. Nice texture and good structure. I am pretty new to Riesling - but this is very enjoyable.

2016 Schätzel Nierstein Riesling ReinSchiefer VDP Ortswein. Alc 11.0%. Pale clear yellow Nose is intense Palate is oyster shell, lemon rind and tart lemon with an earthy component. Quite “ weighty” and textured on the palate. Very impressive. This is a new category/classification along the GG spectrum.

Fin strågul på den gyldne siden. Frisk nese, sitron, fersken, skifer. God fylde. Grønne granny smith epler. Hint av tropisk. Sitron i ettersmaken. Frisk syre som samtidig er myk nok til å unngå stikk i ettersmaken. Fruktmessig på den kjølige siden men balanseres godt mot syren. Fin lengde.

I opened 2 bottles this month and I'd say this wine is closed right now, but has plenty of acid to hold it through a long maturation. I will reopen in 2023.

Schatzel Masterclass with Kai Schatzel (Taberna Wine Academy) : Citrus coloured. Warm, deep, concentrated, very elegant and dusty/mineral bouquet with flinty and herbal aromas flanking the ripe and refined Riesling aromas. On the palate, this is a round, intense and elegant dry Riesling with expressive salinity and mineral grip. This is pure but also long, complex and intensely juicy Riesling with a lot of salty stones in the aftertaste. Youthful. The grapes are sourced from the crus Hipping, Pettenthal, Olberg …

Weingut Schätzel Trade Tasting (Praelum Wine Bistro) : Pale lemon. Aromas of lemons and some slight flint, and cool mint. Acidic, with a slight heightened body, and a whole lot of wet stones with the lemon zest and pulp. Rather clean, fresh, yet fairly complex

Minerality. Linear, precise. Intense lemon, under-ripe orchard fruit. Some sponty aromas. Acid for days. Nice.

straw color, aromatic wine with petrol and ripe peach into pineapple aromas... no oak no malo. on the palate dry to me with high acids, moderately fleshy midpalate, no phenolics, low to moderate alcohol... balanced wine with ok length, good intensity, ok complexity... i would have never put this in the hessen blind... felt very rheingau to me. this will obviously hold for a few years and pick up some nuance but not blowing me away... very likable and enjoyable.

MNB: Riesling vs. Chenin : (blind) Pale straw color. 5-7g RS. (actual 4.7g) Dried apricot nose. Ripe and slightly overripe papaya. On the palate, high+ acid, 13.5% alcohol (actually 11.5%), slight RS, medium finish - citrus and slight papaya. The tropical fruit profile is pointing me towards chenin. Given the general cleanness (lack of oxidation, botrytis), and notable papaya aromas, I think this is a South African chenin blanc: Final call: Chenin Blanc, South Africa, Swartland, 2016, $30 Laterals: - …

Stunning... Beautifully balanced wine with a core of interlaced minerals and white fruit. Ridiculous complexity in the mid-palate of subtle oolongs and herbs. Easily overpowered however by food, sushi in our case; this wine wants all the attention for itself.

Minerals and some honey, green apples; smooth and tart at the same time (strange), moderate length, slightly bitter finish.

From memory. PnP. Lemon, tart apples, herbs, lots of minerals with a mild bitter streak (which I liked). Huge acids kept this really well focused. But the wine also has nice depth and concentration. Liked this.

Bone dry Riesling and it’s an acid lovers dream. Lemon, rocks, earthy funk and deliclousness in a bottle. Quite divine on a hot summers night - not a hint of RS in this wine. Loved it as did my critic of a wife that can detect RS from a mile away. Wish you could purchase this in a box, would work very well as a house pour.

EBRIM’s note is spot-on. I would add a tiny bit of buttery/creamy mouthfeel (which I liked), but at the back half of the finish there is a bit too much spritz even after being open an hour, and the finish ends with a metallic note that’s beyond acidity. Was better with a mild Asian shrimp dish but too much on its own. QPR not bad.

Schätzel Probe: 2012 Pettenthal GG vs 2015 Ölberg GG vs 2016 ReinSchiefer: - Farbe wie erwartet: ReinSchiefer strohgelb/weiß, dann Ölberg und Pettenthal jeweils gelber. Pettenthal dann goldgelb. - ReinSchiefer ist noch spitz. Starke Säure. Geringer Nachhal. Toll!

Oh yes, yet another great wine from Kai. Excellent price quality, all about salty stones in the finish...
