Finally drank our 25 year anniversary wine after a few aborted attempts around our actual anniversary. Paired with beef tenderloin. Short decant. Fun to try and nice wine if not exactly my thing. Seemed fully mature with softened tannins and secondary characteristics showing. Not a lot of fruit still showing but on light red side. Earthy in the general sense but certainly not gamey or funky in any way so comes across as an interesting lightly fruited wine that Id …

Trop concentr et trop bois mon got. Trs bien fait et bien des annes devant lui, mais cela manque d'lgance et de fracheur.

Fourth of five bought during a cellar sale and the best bottle yet. This had a perfect fill and a cork soaked three-quarters of an inch in one spot and only about an eighth of an inch elsewhere. Excellent color. Decanted for one hour and served. Upon opening, this was redolent of aging red berries and forest floor and showed strong notes of cinnamon and clove that persisted for the two hours the bottle was followed. It had excellent concentration …

I had great hopes for this after the fantastic 1998 and 1999. This was supposed to be the final piece of the trio. However, it lacks the depth and complexity of the preceding 2 vintages. Perhaps it will improve as tertiary notes eventually evolve. Every is well balanced, but there is a total lack of depth on the palate and finish.

This was put into service at a dinner party when a 2001 Cos was corked. As a result it did not experience the benefit of a full decant but was showing beautiful texture and flavors befitting the vintage. At a good point for subsumption. My score is probably a bit harsh considering many other fine wines at the table on this occasion.

Second of five purchased at retail from a private cellar, with a like-new fill and a cork soaked about a quarter inch. Opened to replace a corked 2010 DIssan, this was fabulous and much better than the first bottle from this lot. This bottle was showing perfect acidity and lots of campfire embers and a high concentration of black cherry on the nose and palate. Quite tannic still. This bottle could have done with a couple hours in the decanter …

Not as spectacular as my bottle of January 2024. There was also a disturbing bitter aftertaste. Probably I should have sold this bottle rather than drinking it. Oh well

First of a batch of five purchased during a retail cellar sale, with a like-new fill and a cork soaked only a couple millimeters. There was plenty of life left here and not a lot of tertiary action yet, with well concentrated red fruit and lots of tannins on the palate. What it lacked was brightness. It was a little ponderous in this respectthough very tasty and gulpableand this left the finish a bit short. The label says the alcohol …

The most complete and composed of the lineup. Refined yet powerful, it shows the hallmarks of the 2000 vintage: clarity, balance, and focus. Full-bodied but somehow weightless, it delivers black cherry, pipe tobacco, graphite, and sweet spice with seamless integration. Still youthful, and showing more polish than musclea wine that will go the distance.

A model of refined power. Possesses a crystalline clarity, a structure that speaks of meticulous craftsmanship, and an inherent elegance. It's robust and full-bodied, yet remarkably lean, radiating character with every nuance. A truly aristocratic profile, marked by seamless harmony and exquisite development. The palate unfolds with layers of dried cranberry, unripe prune, ripe blueberry, and dark cherry, interwoven with sophisticated notes of tobacco and supple leather. Subtle hints of poppy seed and violet add an intriguing, ethereal dimension culminate …

Good wine, and great bottles. Amazing how much variation you spot in these aged St. Emilions, depending on how much love the owners have shown them in their storage. This was so dazzlingly youthful and voluptuous even at this age. What is amazing is that the mistreated bottles drink like Bordeaux and the well cellared bottles drink like a hybrid Bordeaux/California wine. This one was clearly Bordeaux, but leaning into new world as it warmed and showed an absolutely abundance …

Auction purchase. Decanted 3 hours, lots of sediment, then back in a clean bottle for dinner. I could smell this from a few feet away as I was pouring into the decanter. Beautiful aged BDX nose that I could sniff all day long. Dark stewed cherries, cassis, sweet tobacco, leather, cedar. Someone please make a candle with that combination. In the glass it is dark and bricking. Garnet colored. On the palate I was initially disappointed. Quite muted with little …

Not acquired new. 6 hour decant. Fully mature and do not see it improving. Reading through the notes I thought that the 12/25/2022 note by PJVINEYARDS was spot on. I thought the finish was a bit clipped and the wine lacked the minerality I love in an older Bordeaux.

Good Wine with an Exciting Super Bowl (The Krengels - Bannockburn IL) : Walk around tasting. Very good black fruit with power and depth, just too firm on its long-ish finish. Cellar longer.

Acquired bottles of different vintages from this chteau at an auction a couple of months ago for 40 CHF each. Based on this bottle, it was a steal! Beautiful mature Saint-Emilion with enticing nose and very good length. Again one of these wines that make me love bdx. Thanks to PURPLETOOTH for the prod.

Despite the overwhelming hype around many underwhelming wines from 2000, the Monbousquet is probably the very best from the producer and or definitely a runner up with its 98 stablemate. This is definitely the last great vintage from the classic era, as the next "great vintage" the 2003, can seem contrived and sloppy. Here we have soft earth, deep and slightly liquored raspberries, and beautiful balance that has lost the initial sweetness that is in the backseat now, but re-emerges …

4th Saturday Group: Uptown Brown Bag (V&M's) : Double blind. Faded garnet with a good bit of bricking. Aromas of red currant, iron, bouillon and tea leaf. This has that "just a bit too old" aroma. Medium-bodied, with flavors of red berry fruit, iron and rare beef flavors. Easy to pick out as Bordeaux, but I'd have thought a good bit older. Based on other '00s we've tasted recently, I am fairly confident in saying this was not a representative …

Monthly Tasting Group: Bordeaux 2013 and Older (Capitalle Grille, Mpls, MN) : Very dark red color, 2mm clear edge. Drank a small glass over 90 minutes. The nose is savory, cassis with leather ahd more ripe dark fruits. On the palate this comes off big, intense, blackberry, plum, blue fruits, firm tannins, minerals, scorched earth and dried wood. This still felt youthful, but also in a bigger style. 91(+)pts.

Old Bordeaux (10 years or older) (Capital Grille - Minneapolis) : 1 hour decant. Probably my number 2 wine of the night. Some thought this was a big wine, and yes, it showed plenty of fruit, but still had a lot of nice Bordeaux tertiary character too. The nose was classic Bordeaux with perfumed flowers, dark fruits, earth, and cedar and spice. Palate showed plenty of dark fruit (mostly cassis, blackberry and plum), with some earth, tar, tobacco and sweet …
