Dynamic wine, drank over 2 hours. Started out somewhat muted on nose with thinness on palette. On first impressions 20 min later was mostly cassis and some leather with very noticeably high acid, almost lemony on front of the palette. Fully integrated tannins, red fruits, more cassis. Eventually came full circle about 1hr after open as a complete wine with everything in balance. Semi dry red fruits with subtle pepper came through at this point. Faded a bit on the …

Last bottle from the case, served alongside 2021 Forts, the Pontet showed very well, colour still deep, lovely energy on the nose, dark, ripe fruit, quite solid feel about the wine and strong but well managed tannins. In a really good place and very classic Pauillac style

My contribution to Bordecembre! BB of 65/29/5,5/0,5% CS/Merlot/CF/PV🍇 from the estate I adore - Pontet-Canet, Pauillac, 2001. Decanted 1 hour. Medium intense aromas predominant of tertiary aromas such as fireplace, gunpowder, old leather, dried rose petals, oak and less expressed blackberries, violets. Medium body, elegant, smooth and silky mouthfeel, beautifully balanced, medium soft acidity, velvety tannins. It’s still at the great place, but I don’t see any space for improvement. Nevertheless, damn delicious experience.

Jono's Pontet Canet Extravaganza (The Ten Cases, London) : 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 5.5% Cabernet Franc, 0.5% Petit Verdot. ABV 13%. Lovely nose here; summer greenhouse / tomato leaf pungency. Some tobacco and sandalwood too. This has a seriously sexy nose. Just a couple of ppm of dulce de leche in the margins. I think the palate on this is a little in the shadow of the 2002 but still in a good place; Rooibos tea and cassis on entry. …

Almost a carbon copy of the 2000 with the same vivid bright blackcurrant fruit with gravel, mineral and spicey overtones, but it showed better than the 2000 on the night because it was a bit more harmony and was less blocky

Blind. Correctly guessed right bank Pauillac, and a cold vintage (I initially said 2007 or 2004) but this is 2001. This is quite refined, elegant, a hint of herbal notes, with pencil shaving, blond tobacco scents, quite airy, vibrant and bright in the mouth with a refreshing saline note, a tad thin in the mid palate, lacking some sap, not sweet at all, but with plenty of elegance, nice acidity, what is off, however, is the dry tannic frame at …

Chateau Pontet-Canet 2001 / Domaine Garon Côte-Rôtie Lancement 2018 Two wonderful wines on Friday night, where both got about 2 hours in the carafe. Pontet-Canet 2001 is in a fantastic window right now, like all great wines from Bdx they start restrained, the aroma is precise, pencil, crushed stone, wild raspberries and black currants. The taste confirms the aroma although a little more cautious. The color reveals that there is age, a little more cloudy but still a youthfulness on …

For a week year and its age, a very lively classic Pauillac! Ripe fruit core, cedar, pencil, cigarbox, cassis and some animalic (bur not too much) aromas. Soft tannins, nice accidity. Medium+ body and medium lenght. Drink now 👌🏼

This wine and vintage need no comment... I don't even feel up to making notes about it... I loved the wine. I prefer to transcribe below the comments of the experienced Andrew Cullimore, who tasted the same bottle: "Pontet Canet 2001 Medium ruby garnet , narrow garnet rim . Quite deep spicy tobacco , cassis , redcurrant , grafite , smoky herbal notes on the nose. On the palate this is quite restrained and elegant , with a mix of …

Very Paulliac. Zingy and still fresh and primary. Dense, pure cassis, some tobacco and leather, after a while hints of cigar box. Peppery on the palate with lovely drying tannins. Honestly, if I had more I might wait a few years longer. 69+

From a French cellar with a high shoulder fill, a good cork, and pristine color, this example of 1959 Pontet Canet delights with a seamless nose of black cherry, cocoa powder, leather, wood smoke, and macadamia. Neither the volume nor the definition push this into the realm of greatness, but it is copybook mature Bordeaux which delights by virtue of its cohesion, completeness, and freshness.

A celebration of several birthdays, including my own milestone event : Another birth-year wine holding up impressively well. Just look at that stunning ruby-garnet color! On the nose and palate, it feels like it is half its age. There’s still a core of sweet berry fruit, layered with beautiful notes of cigar box, forest floor, and a touch of clove. For several of us, it was a strong contender for WOTN.

We compared this 2001 with 2018 vintage. It was still very much alive and in its peak (probably in the later phase of the peak). On the nose, it shows leather, tobacco, cedar, mushroom, forest balanced with black fruits. Very tasty. In our group, 2 out of 5 preferred 2001 over 2018 Pontet Canet.

It's always fun to open a bottle from the cellar after being away for a couple of weeks (and not drinking for those couple of weeks). This wasn't my planned wine, but the originally intended bottle of a different wine was corked, so this got the pop and pour treatment, rather that a couple of hours in a decanter. All that said it showed very well, especially after being open for about an hour. It's not richly fruity or showy, …

Stunning, especially when you consider it's 100 years of age. Cherries, strawberries, tobacco, red currants, spice, and leafy herbs were all over the nose, and the soft, energetic palate, finishing with a refreshing, orange rind complexity in the endnote. Drink from 2024-2024.

This 2001 Pontet Canet was drinking really well. It had a classic Pauillac taste profile. Drank really well right out of the bottle. Not agreeing with the "drinkability score" on this one that suggested you should drink this wine now. Glad I did drink it though.

I opened this at midday and sipped a glass slowly every hour until dinner at 6.30. The evolution was pretty incredible. Started out with a stunning nose of cherries, cassis, tobacco and earth but the palate was all tannin and oak with only a hint of what was present on the nose. After the first hour it improved a lot, I started to get a little fruit and some leather and tobacco but the tannins really dominated still. By about …

Bought this bottle 10 years ago directly at the chateau after a drive thru the vineyards with a golf car. 2001 was one of the last years before the transformation of Pontet Canet to biodynamie and much higher prices. This bottle was a real treat. Amazing pauillac cassis and dark fruits, now perfectly integrated tannins and a nice earthiness with mushrooms, wet forestfloor and some tobacco after 23 years. Drink up, i think this is not to get any better …

Note is from a week later. From magnum. This was a classy and classic bottle of bordeaux. Drank amazingly well- good fruit, tannins are softening, long finish. Red WOTN was an 06 Opus one, but this was really close. From the magnum I would say it's ready to go but still has years left, there's no rush.

Going deep into the cellar to celebrate our move to Sonoma from San Francsico. Yes, Sonoma is ground zero for Pinot Noir, but we still enjoy wines from the "rest of the world." ☺ Forgive me, it's a quote. I remember touring Mouton and visiting the chateau's cellars where the guide said: "Here on the left is the cellar of Mouton and on the right is the cellar is for the rest of the world." Ha! The Second Avery Family Cellar Wine Dinner - Really old wines (The Grill Room at the Rosewood DC) : Incredibly unique nose that is dominated by porcini. Chateau Pontet Canet, Pauillac 1962 by a Cruse bottling. Top shoulder, dark red and looks much younger. Punchy flavors of cassis, blackberries, cedar, pencil, black olives. On the palate, presented a medium-bodied, with an acid-present as balanced counterweight to the fruit sweetness. But much cassis, blackberries, cedar, still has not quite juicy elegance and aristocracy. Beautiful medium long finish with cassis, blackberries and cedar. A great wine.

Kemp's 65th including some 1945 wines. : A real treat provided by Jeff King. This was still in business and doing nicely. The nose is classic old Bordeaux with a pleasant musty quality, slight funk and plenty of tobacco. Even a bit of cherries. More cherries and dried cherries on the palate. Layered and complex. Good showing.

Truly, a truffle lovers delight. Truffles, earth and more truffles. Did I say truffles yet? Tart, black cherry in the mouth. The style of the wine was a bit austere. Very old school in style abd probably slightly past its prime. Still, the honor of tasting this wine at the Chateau was not lost on me.
