Gently meaty, smoky and floral. A bit of black olive, blue and black berries. Slightly reductive, not overly fruity.

Needs another year in the bottle! We tasted hints of what it’ll become, but it’s not ready.

Herbaceous, black pepper, black cherry, leather, dried fruit. This benefits from a decant.

This wine is medium plus in body, with silky tannin structure, and is drinking very well in its youthful stage.

Black Hills Syrah Vertical - 2014 to 2019 : Had blind as part of a 2014 to 2019 BH Syrah Vertical. Least favourite nose of the bunch. Pyrazine/peppers - clearly a baby and not ready to be consumed. Ranked 5 of 6, but was close with the 2016 for last place.

My last bottle of this vintage. As before, deep dark fruit on the nose. This persists in the mouth with spice and pepper. Soft luscious tannins with moderate to long finish. It may have lost a bit of freshness, given its age, but not post mature. Another good Syrah from the okanagan.

Over two days. Nose of cherries, blackberries, bramble, chocolate, ‘baked blackberry crumble. It was muted in the mouth apart from black fruit. Moderate finish with smooth tannins. The tertiary flavours of leather and earth were more pronounced the second day.

The vanilla flavour from the oak definitely took away from the overall experience of the wine. Good, but not great.

2012 Black Hills Syrah Clear, perfect burgundy colour with pink rim, with very sporadic, fast-moving tears Clean, med intensity, with aromas of raspberries, Cassis, some floral, leather, olive rind and stewed cherries. Dry, med body, med alcohol, med- tannins, light acidity, further tastes of red cherries, raisins, marinated anchovies, sea salts, and paprika. Perfect pairing for steak with a good finish.

Not as good as the 2014. Intense herbal aroma. Cherry and herbal on the palate. Short to medium finish.

Just too much oak. Not the biggest fan of the Black Hills Estate Syrah, except in 2013, which is fabulous. Should be cellared for at least 3-4 years.

Nice wine, soft tannins, but lacks complexity (straight forward red fruits and a touch of flowery notes) like it's often the case with this wine. Definitely not as good as the fabulous 2013.

PnVnD let air for 1hr. Garnet purple not saturated with rosy to plum rim. Vanilla brûlée and cherry on the nose. Medium(-) with soft ripe tannins. Vanilla soft smoke and Bing Cherry on the palate. Thin in the middle and caramel on the finish. This is trying to hard to be stylish - oak is a seasoning not the main course.

Clear medium purple in the glass with aromas of blueberry and blackberry with sweet spice and a smoky nuance. Blueberry and blackberry follows through on the palate, along with dark fruits and hints of sweet vanilla oak. Medium-full bodied with fine cocoa tannin and a lengthy finish. Nicely balance and drinking nicely now.

Very tight on day one, almost zero nose. After a day, the remaining half was much more open and smooth. Chocolate, good viscocity, long finish. Will let this develop in the bottle for a while before cracking the next one.
