Mount Mary Vineyard, Quintet, Yarra Valley

Loved the previous one so much that I had a second the next day, alongside a first growth Bordeaux of a similar age. This served to highlight the MM's very fine tannins and sweeter flavour in the mouth. Lovely and drinking gorgeously now, but not one to keep in the cellar too much longer ... in the second half of its window

Absolutely glorious. Fabulously well integrated. Very fine tannins in perfect balance with the fruit. Everything in harmony. One of the best MMs I have had. The stats would say ‘drink now’, but felt to me in the middle of the window. An honour to have enjoyed.

Ash, graphite, leafy Cabernet aromatics. There’s a smoky, almost ashtray-like character that dominates early. The palate is austere: fine-boned structure, clipped acidity, and dry tannins that outpace the fruit. Everything feels out of sync at this stage - tight, tense. You get the sense the wine is holding back more than it’s showing. Not ready. Not even close. These wines are built for the long game - cellar it 10–15 years or miss the point entirely.

Appearance: Quick legs in the glass, generally opaque but radiant ruby under light. Nose: Hints of bay leaf (hit my nose first), dry vine, earthy with a little damp forest undergrowth, lovely oak and cedar presence, a little tomato puree, wood ear mushroom, violet, watermelon, mulberry, blackberry, blueberry, cassis, fleeting toasty notes verging on toffee, hints of graphite. The purity of fruit on this wine is incredible. Dark blackberry, cassis, unsmoked tobacco, savoury herbs, blood orange peel, cracked chocolate, aniseed and pepper spice. The palate is pure , precise yet with incredible velvety textures and layers, red and black fruit flood the palate along with orange peel, anise and Indian spices. The tannins nearly melt away yet are always there. The mid-palate is textured and persistent finishing with length and energy.

Double decanted for 2 hours and drunk over a couple of nights. More red than black fruit with a tangy edge. Lots of fruit still present. Super refined on the palate with a silky mouthfeel and really clean finish. Tannins so fine they are barely perceptible. All the elements have come together nicely, showing better on night 2. Entered its drinking window but there is absolutely no rush to drink these.

Bob's cellar. Medium red fruit, no bricking. Funk and reduction on the nose, red fruit acidity, not much else - 45m in decanter from wine fridge. Taste is repressed, feels a little aged and at the end, flat, red crunch with some black fruit peeking through, very bright and edgy. Aged funk pervades the flavours. Air in the decanter may help. Langtons classification tasting (Hyatt Regency, Sydney) : More black hued than the 2021 - touches of blackcurrant, cedar, clean, quite simple nose, again. In the mouth it's a little tart, the fruit still more black hued but crunchy and fresh, sweet spice, talc textured tannins burr. Simple but okay.

Brilliant wine, red fruit, violets and fresh Cabernet leaf on the nose, makes it easy to understand the dominant grape. Still very young, med weight, strong but fine thread of acid, mulberry and layers of forest floor and savory flavors leading to super fine tannins. What a great wine that will be even better in 10 years.

Bob's cellar. Aged red colour but no bricking at all. Bright redcurrant hit your nose initially, then softened by damson, and black cherry, really smells delightful. Soft redcurrant, whisper of tannin but very integrated with the warmth of forest fruits. Lovely wine. With air this gets better too, black fruits come through - excellent wine.

PNP. Deep magenta color. Raspberry, orange zest, chocolate cake, soil, minerality, and subtle peanut. Smooth, dry, slightly tart palate. Full, lower intensity tannins on the medium long finish. This was rated 100 points by Suckling. Bought a bottle and it was uninspired. First time in Hong Kong and needed to see Suckling’s wine bar. It’s surprisingly nondescript and hard to find. Food was mediocre. Regardless, it was a fun experience.

Bob’s cellar. Pure inky red, no bricking at all but nicely aged. Pungent red fruit nose, black cassis and damson, sweetness, and a peppery tannin dash. Still very alive. Taste has a warm sweet forest fruit, hints of redcurrant acidity behind. Good and lively, black fruit oozes through the background. Giving this a 90 opening.

Best Mount Mary I’ve enjoyed. Terrific Cabernet family blend, lovely smooth texture, nice acidity but not overpowering. One of the best Aussie Bordeaux style blends I’ve consumed, if not the best. Still years to go!

A lovely, elegant and balanced Quintet but for me probably not one of the better vintages. Has all the MM hallmarks; medium weight, cassis, cedar, tobacco leaf and some herbal notes, but doesn’t feel like it has that dintinguishing complexity or X factor that often sets it apart. Feels maybe a little short on the finish for me as well. I wonder whether this was a younger wine to drink or if it has more development to come? Unsure.

Bob’s cellar. Still youthful ruby red. Black & red cherries strong vine on the nose, forest floor mushroom notes, acidity comes through. Aged, sweet , earthy and interesting. Sharply acidic and redcurrants on first tasting, very bright and not much depth, too bright to be easily enjoyable. Next day has softened off and joined together. Still red fruit, and balanced with tannins and pepperyness. Reasonable.

Still young and fruit driven. Decanting absolutely required. 2 hours of decanting offered more inspiration but yet to develop the beautiful fineness that will develop with an additional 10 years in the cellar.

Decanted for an hour before drinking. Very young appearance and taste for its age (15+ years now). Really fruit driven - bucketloads of cassis but also some plum, and then cherry, which adds some lift. Whilst never over oaked, there is generous cedar and cigar box notes in this Quintet along with some leather. But right now, this is all about the fruit. A most satisfying drink but it does need to be decanted at least 2 hours before consumption at the moment. Quite muted and dull at first, what struck me was the balance and proportion of the wine. An incredible young wine of such potential. Fantastic length and balance. Ultra fine tannins and perfect acid. Such purity and potential. I suggest leaving until 2025 earliest, but 2029+ should see it in the best drinking zone. One of my best wines of the past 12 months.

Mount Mary New Releases; 10/22/2021-10/29/2021 : Blueberry, mint and raspberry with some toast from the oak coming through for now. Fresh lift on the palate, balances the fruit weight and acidity really nicely and retains good elegance. Nicely proportioned, keen to see where this lands with time but I feel optimistic.

Mount Mary 2021 wine release tasting : From 60ml sample bottle. 13% alc. Dark red-fuchsia with a youthful pink rim. Fragrant, leafy, raspberry, earth, and pencil shavings. Classic. Juicy and leafy on the palate, even and controlled. Excellent length. Lots of very fine tannin. Beautifully balanced red from a pretty warm vintage. Excellent cabernet blend, that should be something special with 20+ years on it.

Colour deep, dark and amazingly fresh. Nose pleasantly fruited but muted. Decanted for an hour. Tasted like a red cherry tart with too much acid not enough fruit. There were secondary flavours of cedar and a certain minerality. Had an overall medium to slight deeper weight for MM. Wasn’t unpleasant but just wouldn’t give up the fruit and wouldn’t integrate. Consumed over 2hrs but maybe would have been better after even more time. Pleasant and very fresh for its age …

375ml….perfect cork, perfect cellaring since direct winery purchase and colour on pour looked totally ok BUT was now a mix of portish sweetness and a vinegar edge - v sad….

Consumed in a vertical tasting against the 2004 and 2007 (not for sale). Cork superb. This drank very differently to the 2004 which is showing its age immediately upon decant. This is much more fruit forward. Well integrated too. The air softens this over a few hours and you can begin to see the artistry. Still fruit, but mellow. Tannins, acid, alcohol all working in balance. Hard to beat this - a near perfect example and enjoyed the journey.

A real treat at lunch just now - have to write this note. Bought soon after release at Queen Victoria Market(?) in a wooden box. Perfect cork, wine stain only up to about 3mm. Great high-toned aged Bdx nose with a touch of mint. Palate to match with good fresh acidity, not harsh, grip just right. Fine long finish. Not flashy and thoroughly enjoyable with perfect balance. NobleRottersSydney - Graeme's Mount Mary (Fix, St James, Sydney) : {diam, 12.9%} Almost absurdly young; this has hardly developed – tasting anything under fifteen years old might have been a waste. Dark currant notes; it dominated by pure fruit, but not overtly so. Vigorous palate, with youthful currant fruit. Has a tight yet assertive feel to it still; medium dusty tannins, medium acid, medium long finish. Not heavy or clunky, but coiled. Needs another decade at least.

A poignant tribute to the winery founder, Dr John Middleton is on the label of this vintage. RIP. As usual for Quintet you see a wine that is not so dense but looks and smells correct for a lighter Bordeaux blend. Decent midweek quaffer, because...Monday :) A nice balanced nose of cassis, blackberry, floral notes, tobacco, green bramble, and some vanillin oak. The palate would be described as 'elegant' by some, and 'thin' by others, but is well structured, with fine tannins, good acidity and a fruit rather than spice finish. It's a light Cab blend in the best Bordeaux tradition. Only 12.9% ABV. Not for people who want a robust Aussie cab blend.

Nose is lifted and full of cherry, mint, cedar. The palate so fine, elegant, resolved. Acids freshen the whole thing up. Light to medium bodied, but with a silly intensity that lasts a long, long time. Drinking well now.

Overall impression is elegant and easily drinkable. At 12.2% abv, I could! Some dark berry fruit, with underbrush, and a minty/eucalyptus note. Can't help but think Heitz Martha's vineyard Cab.
