Underwhelming. Nose was muted, nice texture, almost Vatan-like, but fruit was lacking. Unsure what to think of it.

Tasting Ground official tasting, Francois Cotat vertical (Oinoscent) : Very upfront, powerful, fresh, green notes, peppery, capsicum, a bit warm, starts to shows some candied or overripe notes Palate follows the pattern, high acidity, very structured, showing depth. Runs you over like a truck ! Brilliant and youthful

This is, unfortunately, still rather young with brooding grape-juice-components taking the centre stage. Nevertheless, this is an utterly compelling creation and I can't wait to drink a lot of their more mature bottles.

This bottle tasted too floral, borderline soapy. Very intense perfume of Neruli. Others loved it, I was much less of a fan

Medium lemon yellow. This is another outstanding bottle of this wine which shows that it is still climbing in quality. It needs time to open up, and then shows spinach, sweet herbs (tarragon, thyme and more), fresh grass, hay and candied lemon and lime. This feels restrained still and I expect this to improve more. Good weight - not heavy but rounded edges which have been filed away from an earlier and sharper version of this wine. I love this. …

Had with Pettuses and Luces. Paired with tomato bisque then salmon. Lovely, but austere. Needs another 3-5 years in the cellar.

Opened with Arturo and Claudia's first visit. Intended it for appetizers and first course but the 1995 Lafite pre-empted it. Beautiful pairing with tomato bisque but everyone went for the vino tinto (1989 La Tour Haut Brion with the main). Sigh. Freshness, acid. Will continue to improve with cellaring.

This is tasty and still young, quite vibrant and fresh. The nose features wet gravel, green almond, flint, dill, bitter melon, lemon pith, and ginger. It's medium bodied with round, smooth acid that drives a significant depth of flavor and a longish finish. Flavors include grapefruit, pomelo, white peach, pear, vanilla, and a slight dose of cream. Complex and deep, it's somehow also quite restrained. A sensational wine, I'd be curious to try it another five or seven years. It …

Medium yellow, restrained bouquet but this was wonderful on the palate. Crisp, complex minerality with a deep citrus orchard undertow. Vibrant and long. Really complete wine - I am not a huge fan of Sauvignon Blanc in most cases but this was superb.

90-91 pts

This is the best Sancerre experiences I've had. It's a bit more advanced in its aging process than I would have imagined. The tart, crips notes have completely resolved but the subtle acidity keeps the structure in tact. The palate is savory, perhaps even a touch saline, but the orchard fruit remains long and it strikes a poignant pose on the finish. It gorgeous in the mouth, generous orchard fruit (apple/pear) and it's clearly from a warm vintage. There are …

Slightly sweet, beautifully balanced, interesting structure and complexity, hint of exotic fruits. Impressive. We served this wine for lunch about 10 years ago, a different vintage of course, and that bottle was about 10 years old when we served it. It was much less impressive than this one. One often reads that Pascal Cotat wines will age for decades and should not be opened too soon, but my experience is that there is little reason to wait more than 5 …

Vin difficile a cerner.

Medium straw yellow color with a touch of greenish. Explosive and fascinating, with dark mineral notes, cassis, pineapple, citrus, goosesberries, but this is more driven by minerality and structure, also notes of chalk, wet flintstone, mint and some freshly cut grass. It‘s pretty full-bodied and intense, has high acidity cutting through the richness and a touch of warmth. Long finish with a hint of bitterness. A fascinating Sancerre from this great producer with excellent depth and layers of complexity. This …

Stunningly good 13 years on. Light yellow color. Faint sweet grassiness shows the Sauvignon Blanc but it is elegant and reticent. Mint, honeysuckle, citrus with a glycerin mouthfeel. Good depth but overall a lightness combined with complexity and round body. I love this. You would never guess the age based on the color and flavors. Impressive.

A private dinner (Restaurant Bareiss ***, Baiersbronn, Germany) : A perfect bottle - we were very fortunate, the sommelier was also exasperated by its variability. As fresh as a daisy, honeyed gooseberry and a hint of peach, firm but ripe acidity, gentle bitters, excellent resonance and length. Holds up well over the entire evening. Perfect in itself, could only be Cotat.

I wasn’t that excited about this 5 years ago. Now a nice wine but difficult to say more than that. A bit of botrytis seemed to disappear after half a hour, then a good condition, mature mineral and restrained Sancerre. Classy but no fireworks.

Forward nose of cut grass, spearmint and a floral element. On the palate, some citrus zest, apple and white florals, with a clean, long finish. Enjoyable, though I prefer the leaner and more precise Mont Damnes bottling from this producer. 14%abv.

Fantastic wine, wasn't sure I was going to like it - but loved it. Dry with high (not overly) acidity. Still young and quite tight. Steely grapefruit, lime and hints of Gooseberry. Medium body and alcohol. No oak. Seems to me that it will age a long time and likely develop more richness and complexity. Think this will be a knock out in a few years.

92-93 pts

As usual, this is way too early too crack a bottle of this wine but everything is there to make a great Sancerre in 7-10 years. Shy at opening, not much on the nose and the palate, so give it some air if you decide to try one. After an hour, citrus, yellow apple, white grapefuit, jasmine tea, fresh coriander and iodine notes intermix with tactile mouthfeel and sharp acidity. Patience is required but 2015 vintage bring a certain richness …

Wine needs oxigen. Also better not to serve it too cold. 10°C was even too cold. Nose: a little bit of petrol at first, then green apple and a hint of butter after whirling. Palate: same green apple in the mouth with stonefruit and a hint of grapefruit. Strange and funky finish though.

Another interesting bottle of this wine. Citrusy yellow fruit / goldenrod with a piercing vein of minerality running right through the middle. There are ancillary notes of white cherries, baked pear, lemon, and a touch of ripe grapefruit wrapped up in a precise, brassy package. Finishes medium plus and leaves some lingering youthful tones of lemon and pink grapefruit. This is good, but doesn't demonstrate the depth that I found in the 2006 earlier this year. In great shape. Light yellow in color. Fresh citrus-led fruit with clear mineral on nose. Bright zesty palate with stoney acidity, yet with a nice fruit weight that emerges midpalate. Chose to match with chèvre and roasted garlic and it was just perfect.

A private dinner (Restaurant Ciel Bleu **, Amsterdam, NL) : Attractive nose, well-defined, relatively fresh and vegetal for Cotat, ripe fruit, slightly honeyed, wonderful mineral depth; the palate is balanced, again marrying the usual Cotat calm and ripeness with more lifted flavours and juicy acidity, excellent fruit of cantaloupe melon and blackcurrant; very good length.

Lovely wine, and finally starting to lose some of the biting acidity it showed 6 months ago. Still very mineral and nicely acidic, but with a softness that make it more approachable. Lemon, floral, and mineral flavors. Very impressive wine and one of the better Sancerre I have had. I like Sancerre, but some of them seem a bit simple. This one is not.
