Coravin tasting — this baby was just what I needed after the passing of a beloved. I look forward to seeing where it ends up (if I don’t drink it all). Nose is beautiful, smells like a a warm summer night. Cherry velvety smooth.

Napa Guys trip (June 2025); 6/27/2025-7/1/2025 (Napa, CA) : No proper notes, but I'll say that I preferred this over a 2013 Sassicaia and a 2011 Alzero. My favorite of the half dozen Italian wines we had over dinner.

Sangiovese TOP 2006 tasting (Wine Taste Gdansk) : Another star of the night. More garnet-toned than the Biondi-Santi. Exceptionally complex nose with floral notes, damp leaves (at this point I wondered if we were in a forest instead of a tasting...), red fruit, a candied hint, and a touch of oak that still shows a slightly sweet edge. On the palate, this was probably the youngest of the night—high acidity, firm tannins, and a fuller body than the Biondi-Santi. Very …

SangioFest, Volume IV "Merry Christmas 2010 Denise and Mike" (Chicago, IL) : Quite pleasant, if very young and immature. Still in the wild throes of youth, this is massively structured with lots of black fruit. A touch of volatility but very lovely, rustic tannins on the back end here. Not as expressive as I'd want from a great bottle of Pergole Torte, but given the big vintage and the 10 years of age, probably a wine that needs much more …

SangioFest, Volume IV "Merry Christmas 2010 Denise and Mike" (Chicago, IL) : Fairly similar to the 2015 in the same flight. It's ripe, large-scaled, and shows lots of black fruit with coarser, rustic tannins. In fact, this seems simply like a slightly more mature version of the 2015, but is still fully not ready to drink. A wine that clearly needs at least another decade as well.

A little more fruit compared to the 2014, but on the palate also a little less harmonious with firmer, more angular tannins and somewhat harsh acidity. Should improve with time. 91-92+

Frustratingly the second corked Le Pergole Torte after the 2016 in the lineup (and not the last defective bottle). Slight cork taint on the nose again, less obvious compared to the 2016. Stewed fruit on the palate, very drying.

Another defective bottle after the 2015 and 2016 earlier - no cork issue this time, but showing stewed fruit, flat, tired, pruney, almost maderised. Maybe a storage/transport issue.

Opened very nicely into a pure, dense and deep expression of Sangiovese. Deep red, going into purple fruit on nose and palate; sweet red currant, red cherry, darker cherry. The tannins softened nicely after a couple of hours this had a real freshness and mineral tension on the finish, balancing out the fruit. Underpinned by a darker earth or herb note. Very enjoyable over a long lunch putting the world to right with Ivan. 94-95.

Disappointingly unimpressive. A reasonable blackberry and cherry palate, mid to light weight and only moderate structure, not what I expect from this part of the world. Shortish finish, straightforward. Drinking now.

I let this slow ox for four hours and then decanted for two more. It definitely needed the air, it started out quite thin and tannic but with air developed a luxurious richness and the tannins softened nicely. It was also much more enjoyable with food than on its own. I paired it with carbonara and then tri-tip. Aroma was very Bordeaux like, cigar box, dark fruit and a hint of funk. The palate was much lighter than the nose …

Opened at Luonto in Tokyo. Served by the glass. Good, but Pergole Torte for me always lies on the darker end of the Sangiovese fruit spectrum for me, which isn't my preferred interpretation of this grape. Good structure and drinking well at this age though, and will keep for a while at this level.

Overall I thought this was a good wine but was underwhelmed based on the how crazy the pricing has become. The Pergole was much more delicate than what I prefer in my Italian wines but even with delicate wines, you can still differentiate flavors. The fruit and tannins were not balanced and in general, the fruit was not very pronounced. I don't have a lot of experience with these wines and may have popped this one too soon. I have …

(From 1.5L) Prior bottle was six and a half years ago at a restaurant in Rome. The wine has not only evolved quite positively (exceeding my expectations), but served from magnum also made a noticeable difference. Mostly red cherry on the nose with some black cherry qualities as well as earth and spices for what ends up being a beautiful nose; more aromatic than my prior bottle. Medium bodied with red cherry and red berries upfront, adding black cherry through …

Super Tuscans 2016 (Lake Side Emotions) : Elegant yet concentrated. High acidity, but less aggressive than Flaccianello. Layers of black cherry, cherry pit, and vanilla-laced oak give it a plush, modern feel. With time, it reveals notes of rose petal, menthol, and soft leather. Refined and aromatic, with real finesse behind the density.

Big Wine Lunch - Aug B'day's : At the opening, the wine had a beautiful perfume on the nose—perfect Sangiovese. This was the last wine shared, and after about four Bordeaux, unfortunately, it didn't hold up. The rusticity of tannins vs the first growths that came before was profound. I liked the wine, but it didn't hold up against the Bordeaux that had just come before.

August birthday celebration : My contribution. Started off inky and structured so I left it in the ice bucket and forgot about it. When it was finally taken out it was a little too cold, but nonetheless this couldn't stand up to the other wines today, despite having loved this wine three years ago. Some roasted, plummy fruit, showing more development than the previous bottle but still had the tannic bite that made the other French wines overshadow this. Somehow …

Nose: vanilla, black fruits, black pepper, cedar Notes: 14% ABV, tasted vertically 99, 11, 14, 16, drank from a magnum. It is difficult to comment on how good this wine is capable of becoming as this is currently way too young to be consumed. Full of primary notes and clearly 10 years is too early for us to even see the surface of this complex wine. It is still very tannic and oak influenced. Opened at Estro in HK. Decanted before serving. This was a pleasant find on the list, and we chose to decant it to let it open up properly, which I think was the right (if potentially sub-optimal) decision. Thankfully, no brett/barnyard on this bottle either, which was a real problem with the previous Magnum of 2014 that I had a few weeks ago. With everything working well, this was a lovely bottle! The wine was decanted for three hours prior to tasting. Medium garnet color; nose of fresh herbs. After several disappointing bottles, I am pleased to report that this wine has finally come into its own. Lush black cherry fruit is balanced by deeply nuanced tones of leather, tar and delicious “Tuscan dust”. Sangiovese night (Chicago, IL) : Very Pergole Torte, with its delicate red fruit and silky texture. Relatively on the lighter side, with less of the raw power of a bigger vintage, and more of an acid-driven elegance. I love the floral perfume here, but the tannins on the back end suggest that a few more years is probably the right course of action.

Mixed feelings about this wine. I sincerely love the Montevertine so I had high hopes for this wine. I thought that the wine was flawed. It had the smell of cellar and some hints of it as well on the palate. Other experience tasters disagreed and said it wasn't "cellar smell" but rather earthy notes. I am not convinced. Therefore, no rating.

From mag. Ready to drink. This is a much lighter style of LPT given the vintage - decanted for 2hrs+ in 2x 750ml decanters and it needed it. Wow, this was bursting at the seams - the nose was to die for. Tuscany in a glass - intense violets, dried cherry, asphalt/scorched earth, wild rosemary. The palate is more light bodied for LPT but makes up for it with juicy and bright cherry flavors with extremely fine and supple tannins. …
