Nikolaihof, Im Weingebirge Gruner Veltliner Federspiel, Wachau

A pleasant bottle of gruner, would complement food well and not distract at all. Sneaky complexity.

2013 vintage

Whether random variation or a little further maturity is the cause is hard to say — either way this bottle was a quantum leap better than the first three. A complete wine, one of those experiences where trying to describe component flavors seems a disservice. It was sui generis, of a piece, tasting like itself and only that, seamless. As good as anything I have drunk in a long while, its relatively humble origins notwithstanding.

Day 1: large dose of Nikolaihof funk. Took 2 hrs. to blow off. Days 2&3: Citric.Mineral on nose and palate with woodsy finish (sorrel?). Much better with air. I am glad I followed this for three days. Day 1, 86-87, Day 2 88-89, Day 3 90.

Mineral, lightly citric, vegetal nose. Vegetal/herbal and mineral on the palate. plus a bit of the Nikolaihof funk. I find the flavors of this wine very difficult to describe in more detail. This is the Jan. 2020 bottling, after 6 years in barrel.

This seems a little less vibrant than past bottles. Shows good salty minerality, tart fruit, a slight pepperiness But it’s also somewhat diffuse. Good bottle but maybe beginning to flag a bit. Edit: Note was for first glass without food. Seemed to expand and add weight with baked trout with garlic broccolini and lemon slices. The wine really popped with the dish.

At once creamy and tart. There is a silkiness here that reminds me of the very few great white Burgundies I have had the pleasure to taste. This goes down awfully easily, with no rough edges.

The epitome of purity on the nose: floral, spicy and most bright with notes of green apple and honeydew. Dry and downright ethereal on the palate with superb spritzy acidity. Restrained expression for sure (11,5 % ABV), yet lacking nothing. This is firm, charming and highly satisfying in the most mouth-watering way, making you crave for another sip over and over again.

Salt, pea sprouts, and citrus in the lemon/lime/grapefruit spectrum. Looking for black or white pepper, but not finding any. Very well made wine -- good mouthfeel with some creamy roundness, medium bodied and pleasing. I like this one.

I seem to be in the minority here, but to me this was a stunningly good bottle of Gruner, in an earthy and husky style. Giant and complex aromas, very deep, fresh and energetic palate. A joy to drink!

Relativt stum på duft, men gir noe pepper, potetkjeller, og kanskje sellerirot? Friskere i munnen, med fin ettersmak av grapefrukt. Men svært enkel. Kristin liker ikke, Dag syns den er helt ok. Men best rett fra flaska, den taper seg med luft. Kræsjer veldig med morbier, blir nesten metallisk.

no proper notes - Typical style from nikolaihof with good concentration and showing the Grüner character well. Lacks a bit in finish and seems a bit tired but needs air. Very good quality 88p

I didn't find that this had either the stony elegance of the couple Nikolaihof rieslings I've tried, or the signature grassy freshness of grüner veltliner. It was fine with food, but not distinctive at all. I'm glad I only paid $15 at Premier Cru (back when...) Good.+

Had over two nights Floral notes initially. Day 2 aromatics showed waxy and wooly character. Limey acids with flint notes. A little honeycomb and wool on day two. This is delicious to this gruner newbie

11,5% alcohol. Pale green color. Fresh, very intense and expressive nose with bright aromas of citrus fruits, some white pepper, a little bit of smoky character, light Granny Smith apple tones, a hint of stony minerality and a somewhat nutty and slightly bready touch of that distinctive Nikolaihof funk. This is the first bottling sold under the BBR label with fruit sourced from Nikolaihof's "Im Weingebirge" vineyard. Nice, spicy nose with good ripe fruit. Open and expressive on the palate with nice mineral and white pepper notes, bright acidity and good fruit. More upfront and simpler than their 2013 Vom Stein Federspiel, but the QPR is excellent. 88-90

Nicolas Joly 2011 Tasting with Virginie Joly : Pepper, fennel, herbs and bath salts. There is some richness on the palate, with plenty of spice that gives it some character. Nice.
