Dog Point Vineyard, Chardonnay, Marlborough

The bottle was included in a wine club subscription. A recent library release by the winery. 14% ABV. Light to medium yellow gold. The nose is a little subdued by oak. Grapefruit, green apple, tropical notes, oak spice, and flinty mineral tones, with high acidity and good length. The acidity stands apart and feels a little artificial as if it was adjusted post fermentation and did not fully integrate, but the wine has good concentration and great freshness. Still youthful.

2014 vintage

An example of a good NZ Chardonnay. The wine looks light gold colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like lemon and burnt match. It tastes like bready, leesy, butterscotch, lemon, apple and light toast. The body is medium. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity.

2014 vintage

Golden colour . Cloudy. Grilled peach/pineapple nose. Dry, slightly sour. Unpleasant. Shortish finish. Either badly over the hill or corked. I'm thinking corked because it has that stripped out lean flavour profile.

This could be at its second ferment stage..or could be on its way out. If I could try in 1-2 yrs I would. But when your on a Fiji island & you have a choice of ‘14 DP chardy or a jacobs creek Sauv blanc.. well the choice is obvious. Some btles better than others, linear, flint & mild M6 clone quality mid to back plate. Still does the trick.

Pretty intensely flinty reductive nose, but quite a soft vanilla oak palate, that finishes with increasing tart acidity that brings back some of that reductive flint in the back of your throat.

12th bottle of case. What a difference 2 years makes - so much better than 1st 11 bottles. Citrus notes & orchard fruits on the nose. Long finish of peach, hazelnut and whiff of vanilla keeps going. A bargain at $26 & looking for more. Pair with grilled chicken or sea bass.

Had it more times than care to remember but still just a great glass. Strong reduction that needs a bit of air, but plenty of fresh acidity, matchstick and yellow citrus fruits with oak that’s starting to be fully integrated. A great value for money

After the excitement of the last bottle this time we had a wine that was perhaps overripe and heading slowly towards post peak maturity wise. So drink up may be the message whilst there is still much to admire

Boy oh boy this was drinking so much better than the last bottle a few months ago. This was richer, more overtly fruity in a melon and tropical fruit sort of a way and overall a more powerful wine.

Sorry but I have to say it, “Burgundian” in style. Very pleasurable but for me not quite in the premier league of new World Chardonnay but then again not priced to be so. Interesting that several reviewers believe that this wine has a long life ahead of it. We shall see and I look forward to doing so

woulda called this Beechworth for sure. White peach, smoke, bright lemon sweets. Sulphide, Toffee apple, Some lovely almond meal and gentle marzipan. Fruit flows through. A grand symphony of Chardonnay goodness

2010 vintage

This is a winemaker's wine made in a particular style that you either like or you don't. Me less so ... Pale lemon colour. The bouquet is all sulphides and (perhaps) oak in a flinty, mineral style, showing little or no primary fruit character. I have no problem with sulphur on Chardonnays, particularly in white Burgundies to protect against premox and other issues, and think that this can add a pleasing complexity. Here however the biouquet seems 'worked' to exhibit …

Toasty oak and apple nose. Fruit and acid are fading slightly but not the oak. An enjoyable bottle but it should be consumed soon.

Bouquet: Restrained flintiness and patisserie notes. Palate: Citrus core and mineral backbone, balanced, texture, fresh acidity. Food match: Scallops, white fish and BBQ Pork. Cellaring: 3-5 years.

89/90 on day 1 , but the 92 rating based on a particularly good showing on Day 2, where the other half of the bottle (overnight in fridge) had really come together very nicely indeed. Look fwd to trying again to see if same result.

Australia trip; 3/25/2017-4/10/2017 (Australia) : Pale yellow. Has this strong herbal note reminding me of the Greywacke. Have not seen this outside NZ Chardonnay. Anyway this is crisp while being both complex and with decent length. Excellent Chardonnay.

Blind Tasting - Finest New Zealand Chardonnay (Epsom, Auckland) : Open nose, most reduction and oak flavours tonight, m++ acidity, full body, very 'new world'. I thought it was Keltern, and ranked it #2 for its density but less mellowed and less harmony. It's rated #4 by group. Alc 14.0 %, pH 3.27, TA 6.7 g/l, RS 0.78 g/l. MC 4.5 stars, RC19.5, WS 93 Ap 5/5, Ar 13/15, Palate 17/20, Overall 4+2/10 Total 91+/100

Medium yellow. Fragrant of barrel, struck match, lemon and then pear and fennel. Full flavored, silky and bright; pear candy. On the finish this is crisp, short and slightly of old apple juice. This wine is 80% excellent.

Classy stuff. Tropical fruit with some underpinning creamy oak. Broad on the palate but with sufficient acidity to keep things in check. Medium finish. There was a sulphurous, burnt match note to begin with but this diminished with time in the glass.

Grilled pear and toasted honeysuckle on the nose. Slight yellowish tint. The experience on the palate is somewhat disappointing after the expectation set by the intriguing nose. Medium in body, crisp and acidic for the malolactic style not quite in balance. Ehhh...it's okay.

A subtle and fresh chardonnay that was certainly tasting younger than its 4 years. A gentle oak, followed by acid-bright pineapple and guava fruits. Nice, but not exciting for me.

Med yellow. Smokey oak, struck match and some ripe apple. The toasty oak prevails on the palate, cut by the bright acid. Underneath all of this I detect some fruit. Jadot-style. 2016+

Light yellow. Sulpher candle and white fruit. Straight forward pineapple and pear fruit. Lively (malic?)acidity. Very good drinking today. It has the acid to last a few years, but not sure it will improve.

Crisp and lemony but with just the slightest hint of wood. Refreshing, middle of the road Chardonnay.

Dinner with the grapemates : Lanolin, oak, peach and some leesy notes. The wine showed better after some time to open up in the glass. Good focus and nicely textured it is a solid wine, but didn't really excite me on this occasion. I did prefer this to the 2009 version.

Really enjoyed this, managed to combine buttery notes, peaches and well managed spicy oak with a good acid spine and some tension on the palate. Touch young and spiky now, leave it a year or more, should be a cracker.

Light colour belies the oaky/smoky and struck match nose. Really the fruit is hidden by the winemaking. On the palate the greeen apple fruit is a little more apparent but not obvious. Is elegant and shows a crisp finish... Enjoyable, but I will leave the remainder for a couple years to see if it balances and resolves.

Delicious new world Chardonnay and one of the best I've tasted... great acidity, full of citrus with rich oak flavours. ~60% of planted vineyards in NZ are in Marlborough. Cloudy Bay looks to be pretty close to Dog Point. We drank this at W8 restaurant in South Kensington Nov 12.

Dog Point Tasting @ The Sampler (London) : Apple and a little oak on the nose. Crisp, green apples. Rich, textured and very pure tasting. Very good.
