This wine has such terrific fruit purity and an engaging floral scent one could be in Volnay or Chambolle, but one is not, one is in Auxey and that's good because it means one has to pay less for a beautifully crafted red Burg. The palate is crammed full of crunchy red fruits and there are some fresh earth notes. To borrow a phrase from a few of you ‘septic tanks’, the wines of Catherine and Claude Marechal are ‘right in my wheelhouse’. This Auxey is fresh, pure, lively and crisp. It starts off with a whiff of violets and red fruits dusted with icing sugar. The smell along makes me think more of Volnay. In the mouth it is very direct with lovely sweet, red berries that are so sharp and in focus thanks to the supportive, mineral acidity. …
