Still a lovely Pyrenees Shiraz at age 21!

2008 was a quite warm year and in some parts of Victoria, out west, a 'difficult to manage' vintage as there were a couple of consecutive weeks of very hot days right around vintage, necessitating a rush to get fruit off the vines for some - so I expected a big, brooding dense wine . . . . instead, it's almost the opposite. The colour is a lovely translucent ruby/dark cherry maturing red throughout and it's not all that dense, …

Found this cellar orphan which had been previously marked as "consumed." Well, what a good surprise, mellow, rich and deep in flavors with melting tannins and enough acid to support the generous fruit and notable warm spices. 20 years old and a superstar! Perfect to sip on its own and with a pork and spinach ragout. Garagiste said it would age for 20 years and it has done so splendidly.

dark ruby with garnet rim and full body. lovely balsamic nose of mature black fruit with sandalwood and whiffs of eucalyptus, soil, and crushed dried flowers. dry and shy on entry, it gains in volume and depth with alternating sweet and savoury notes to the dark fruit and delightful spice accents. lovely texture with powdery tannins and an umami quality that carries into the appreciable length. fully developed and (this bottle anyway) ready to go for another decade or so. …

Still drinking wonderfully. I don't believe it's developed much in the last 10 years (there is no sediment) but it's still going strong and was obviously an outstanding vintage. Nose of play-doh, molasses, lacquered wood and strawberry popcorn. Mouth with good viognier height, quite a chewy texture for an older wine, prunes, blueberries and licorice. A long finish of toasted firewood and mimeograph fluid.

The sight of an old wine under screw cap stirs the loins in the same way that the sight of Stormy Daniels in negligee no doubt would. Like Stormy you just feel the artificial closure is better at keeping the extremes of age and gravity at bay. And so it proves. I don't know if some of the other comments on this wine are from bottles under cork (and so have tired earlier), however, this bottle is mature yet fresh; …

Extracted from my wine storage for nye 2021/2022, tasted over 2 nights. {ScrewCap} Dark purple in the glass, slight bricking, medium-small amount of sediment at the neck. Mostly savoury, smoked meat, black pepper, caramel. Sour cherry/plums/bramble fruits on the palate with a touch of spicy heat. (hope tomorrow brings the fruits!) Day 2 more of the same, good that it hadn't budged much in flavour but the fruit has waned, more into a secondary stage. Lovely rich, dark fruit palate …

Perfectly well made, but certainly nothing to write home about. Juicy. Vanilla, red berries, raspberries on the finish. But just a bit boring, frankly.

Medium to deep garnet. Dark fruits and oak spice aromas on opening, with a few hours there is an additional lift of pure candied raspberries. Smoky, dark fruits, some citrus peel with air, gentle grip on the midpalate, reasonable length. Structure will allow for holding for a few more years, however I doubt there will be any further positive developments - more just softening of the fruit and structure.

Still has life in it with lovely, deep blackberry pie fruit, coffee grounds, and nice acidity. Unfortunately had a bit of the "cooked carrot" note found in some of these old shiraz bottles that I dont love, but still clearly well made, and nicely purply tasting even with the bricky color; not too hot or overwhelming at all. Drink now for sure; I'm not sure if this was stored in ideal conditions (especially as the cork broke horribly, and others …

Was sure this would be stuffed when I pulled the capsule off to reveal signs of previous weeping. Cork was saturated, but came out in one piece. Three hours in the decanter and this was a beautiful wine. Not possibly the power I was expecting for the vintage, but beautiful balanced fruit. Plenty of primary and secondary flavours, with little sign of tertiary, suggesting that well cellared bottles might have a long way to go. Beautiful aged wine and a …

Nearly perfect cork. After quick decant to remove loads of sediment, initial nose pretty off-putting of ash and slightly plastic? - But first taste was quite nice. Good fruit, predominantly cherry/sour cherry, some complexity, ashy, with a bit of tannic grip. - ended up fading too quickly. Flat/dead.

Beautiful wine. Quality all the way and consumed with probably another 2yrs before hitting it peak. Decanted for 2.5hrs before consuming. Tannins are powdery but not yet fully integrated resulting in a wine with sufficient structure to support the fruit should you want to get the bottle to 15yrs. The fruit is surprisingly vibrant for a 13yr old wine and drinking perfectly. I'm so glad I opened this bottle (especially considering that I'm not a huge cool climate Shiraz drinker). …

Not as powerful as I had hoped but might be due to the cork which was stained all the way to about 1mm form the basis of top (or the storage that led to this). Still a lovely complex wine with a savoury finish.

NobleRottersSydney - Blind Shiraz Options 2004-06 (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney) : {screwcap, 15%} {Aaron} Developing nose of tar & bitumen. I was picking McLaren Vale on the nose, but that’s likely the ultra-ripe fruit coming through. The palate does offer a little of the classic Langi white pepper flavour, and is less sweet and raisiny than the nose suggests. Becomes increasingly spicy with air (decanted just before serving). In the end, is around medium-bodied, and less hot that the …

I thought I'd try this again after ten years. What was I thinking? I guess I just don't like Syrah (unless it's a blend from the Rhone). I didn't like it then, and I don't like it now. The big, full-bodied, ripe, sour-fruited, oaky thing just doesn't do it for me. Even after a decade. I see what lights people up, but it's just not me.

Mix of wines at Via Alta : Spice, earthy, raspberry and leather. The palate has a bit more fruit presence than a previous bottle and it is a better wine for it, though it still doesn't hit extreme heights. Still, it is very pleasant to drink at the moment, but probably not a long term wine.

A very nice Shiraz which is peaking right now. First impression is one of clean fruit, thyme, sage, Eucalyptus and a lovely integration. The palate follows through nicely with a perfect balance. There are no hard edges, still this wine exhibits a clean and slender profile compared to many Australian Shirazes which are perceived as over-ripe and too alcoholic. Drink up now. There is no reason for further cellaring.

A reddish hue. Seductive nose with some black fruit but an earthiness, leather and a hint of licorice to the fore. 7 out of 7, just delightful. The palate is rich and still has some tannic grip. If I am to be critical, perhaps it tails away a little at the end. I wish I had a box of these.

Grampians Shiraz Verticals - Seppelt and Mount Langi Ghiran Tasting (Sydney, Australia) : Sage and herbs, very earthy and some leather. It's nicely savoury and complex on the nose, the palate isn't as interesting unfortunately. It is fairly lightly weighted, which isn't a problem in itself, but I felt the depth and length were not playing enough of a part to shine in this company. Drink now and in the short term.

This wine had faded somewhat, but still had fruit and plenty of secondary, aged character. This is the kind of wine (ie aged quality stuff) that can give similar level and aged European wine a run for its money.

2012 Sydney Royal Wine Show - Exhibitor's Tasting (Olympic Park, Homebush) : Gold medal. {screwcap} Youthful blueberry & earth nose. Sweet blueberry/blackberry flavours; seems all fruit at this age; medium powdery tannins are well-concealed, oak is similarly discreet. It’s medium-bodied, but the balance along the palate is terrific. Perhaps that’s what the serious asking price is factoring in… Medium-length finish. One for the long haul.

Far superior to the 2003 version that was consumed a night earlier. I approached this bottle with some trepidation. Reviewing old notes, I found this to be "OK" in 2008, "VG" in 2009 and excellent now. I didn't keep notes, but excellent generally means full of fruit in the nose and the mouth, good mouthfeel, some level of complexity (or not if the fruit has enough stuffing), medium to long finish and lots of pleasure without any detracting qualities. 2011 Sydney Royal Wine Show - Exhibitor's Tasting (Olympic Park, Homebush) : Bronze medal {screwcap, 14%} Youthful, but weedy and earthy nose. A peppery palate follows that melds some blackcurrant fruits with earth and iron flavours. Strong chalky tannins make up a medium-full bodied impression on the tongue, with an evenly balanced palate, and a long savoury finish. 3 of these left to follow. A medium, ruby robe with no signs of bricking. Spicy, brambly red berries, pepper, and a minty/menthol note. Fresh, lively, and food friendly, but lacking a bit of oomph and ripeness. Finishes with firm tannins. There's no shortage of structure and this should continue to age nicely into a nuanced, medium-bodied shiraz, but I don't think the opulence is there to elevate this wine with extended cellaring.
