2012 Hospice du Rhone Grand Tastings; 4/27/2012-4/28/2012 (Hospice du Rhone, Paso Robles, California) : Light medium golden yellow color; honeyed, honeycomb nose; mature, a little oxidized, lanolin, honeycomb palate; medium-plus finish

Clear pale yellow. Orange and honeysuckle nose - not too floral (which often is the case with CA Viognier). A little pineapple and spice on the palate - with a wonderful bit of salinity that contrasts beautifully with the fruit. Lovely finish with nice brace of minerality. Love it!

This one personally didn't sit well with me. I didn't have the floral notes I expect in a viognier, and the fruit was flat.

great example of the evolving CA Viognier style. Not as floral and fruit fwd as the Central Coast Rhone Rangers. That subtle restraint and the wonderfully complex finish wins me over. Still not convinced.

All the components I like in a Viognier, plus violet! Terrific with a mustard-glazed chicken breast.

DuMOL Prebuy (K&L Distributors) : Rich aromatics of tropical fruits, orange blossoms, and coriander. Nice acidity up front with only moderate richness. The floral element follows through on the palate with white pepper. Unique and enjoyable, but not cheap.

Another great bottle. The wine is showing more of a floral component on the nose... it was very nice with some Asian fare.

I'm liking this better the second time around; the exotic tropical flavors are showing their stuff. Maybe it was too long since I had a Viognier, so I tasted a white Hermitage to get the palate revved up again. This shows quite well in comparison.

Tasty, but a bit nondescript. Served blind, I don't think you would know what you were drinking. Some heat masks the spicy, exotic Viognier character I'm expecting. Could it be too young? I have one more bottle, so we'll see.

Hospice du Rhone 2007 "It's Only Natural" Seminar (Paso Robles, California) : Pretty honeysuckle and melon. Flashy and bright viognier, that is balance out nicely by the acidity and minerality. Very nice.

In the glass, clear, slightly pale yellow. On the nose, honeysuckle with hints of peach and flint. On the palate, a slightly viscous mouthfeel with floral notes, peach, and more noticeable minerality, with a touch of black pepper on the finish. A nice viognier, pleasant on its own or with seafood. Would be really nice with oysters.
