Tasted alongside the 2009 vintage. In a sense, the wine did not surprise. Deeper garnet color than the 2009, aside the typical balsamic note the wine developed quite a bit of sweetness. The first impression is of a lot of overripe fruit, prunes, drying fruit and lots of sweetness. At some point it could have been confused with a merlot or bordeaux blend from california. Shy at first, opens up wonderfully an hour after decanting. Great clarity. Florals, cherry juice, some citrus and a hint of mint on the nose. The weightiness on the palate matches the nose's cherry intensity. Good structure. A bit savory, too. Accessible and easy to drink.

Barolo sampler : From magnum. The unexpected standout of the lineup. This wine delivered the goods: freshness, secondary notes (tea and dried florals) in a silky package exuding effortless harmony. Stood up for weeks, decanted off a small amount of sediment. Light ruby; aromatic, red cherry, almost like a sour cherry or a maraschino cherry, some rose petals; palate is light bodied, high youthful tannin, medium-plus to high acidity, notably high alcohol (14% on bottle, seems higher), red fruited; finish is medium length. This old school barolo is not for me. Although the mid is OK, it gets spoiled by the overly sweetness at the back. Not my style. Got described as "the more polite and docile brother of amarone", and I think that is an accurate description.

Josh's Mascarello dinner (Cloth) : Back to classic monprivato florality on the nose. Super delicate, super truffled. It’s still a “warm” wine – all of the fruit is pretty ripe, strawberry notes the most dominant. Palate follows, albeit with a fair amount of restraint – all very ‘in place’. My preference would be for a little more acidity but this is a very pretty, delicate wine

Josh's Mascarello dinner (Cloth, London) : Medium red. Classic nebbiolo nose - flowers, cherry, freshly laid road tarmac, it's all there. On the palate the red fruit is so elegant, yet the wine has such latent grippy power at the same time. Monprivato Vertical: 04-12 (Cru and Domaine, Portland OR) : This is a lot like the bottle I had in March. It's expressive and red-fruited that shows off the warmth of the vintage very well. It could use a few more years to smooth out some rough edges, but I imagine that it will always have a bit of fatness to it due to the vintage.

Dinner at Osteria Langhe (Osteria Langhe, Chicago IL) : Where the Rinaldi Tre Tine was lush and a bit too rich, this bottle took the vintage and really ran with it. Yes, there is a red-fruited take to the nose, but it is fresh and perfumed with tones of strawberries, raspberries, roasted herbs, morning dew, crushed rocks, violets, and rose petals. Quite tight and unyielding at first, showing a whiff of tar and some ironstone. Really breathes up beautifully, with red jube-like fruits and engaging florals. It is rich and heady through the mid-palate and finishes with plenty of muscle and very good persistence.

Piedmont theme : Incredibly fresh with a brilliant ruby colour. Would have guessed 2015 if not for the 2013 vintage cut-off. Light-footed and elegant, attractive strawberry red fruit but lacked the stuffing I expected of Monprivato.

Pretty nose full of fresh roses, bright red strawberry and cherry fruit, laced with some cherry liqueur. Chirpy, elegant and fine.. Some minerals and dusty tannins at the back. This had sort of an understated beauty to it which was quite lovely.

I have to say: there are plenty of Barolis to prove that 2011 is an underrated vintage in piedmont and probably also in Tuscany. I have had so many great 2011 baroli but I think this one might be the best one to date. So complex, tertiary but still energetic and intense. A top class Barolo. Close to perfection - but I have to leave room for the 2010’s, 13’s and 16’s waiting for us.

Complex. Starts with intense fruity nose, strawberries and red fruits. But then it evolves in more earthy notes, mushrooms, nearly spicy. The tannins are still quite grippy, the acidity has lowered. At taste the earthy, spicy notes are more dominant. Medium to full body, long finish. Delicious and very much in evolution during the evening.

Slow-O for 6 hours prior to dinner and this needed every minute of that air, it really didn't show it's best until after being in the glass for another 2 hours. Initially quite light, had an edge of bricky maturity and felt like it could be on a downward slope.
