A complex melange of orange peel, plums, prunes and blackcurrant seasoned with spice. Barely medium sweet, it didn’t quite achieve the weight or complexity of an aged Tawny port, nonetheless it combined perfectly with a dish of pears poached in red wine. CHP 90 pts Bottle revisited after being opened on 30/12. Rich and succulent the sweetness feels more pronounced. By the glass. Masculine aromas of cedar, dark chocolate and coffee. Also some mature fruit. On the palate has a bright acidity and a extraordinary length. Unsurprisingly a very good bottle. This wine is fantastic with chocolate cake. The rancio flavors, the earthiness and stamina of this wine makes it of very few to pull this off. Terribly under-rated and under-priced as so many dessert wines.

A solid wine. Great QPR.

2012 vintage

Fairly pale and evolved color as you would expect with the oxidative aging followed by cask aging. Combines evolved fruit with tertiary aromas. Intense plummy, eau-de-vie nose with earthy, cacao. great richness, texture and length. Not likely to evolve much but should last quite a while. Delicious!

Sepia with Elaine and Chirong (Sepia, Sydney) : Yeasty sherry, madeirized nose. Complex, meaty and savory, reminiscent of PX, and lees. Toasted nuts, honey and figs on palate, and beautifully yummy with the autumn chocolate forest with hazelnut, almond, violet crumble cream, blackberry sorbet, rose jelly, green tea, licorice, chocolate twigs, fennel and violets!

The color is clear, developed brick red. The nose is clean, med+ intensity, raisins, ripe fig, prunes, caramel, fig jam, apple marmelade, warm character and well hidden alcohol. Sweet, med body and med+ intensity, 16% alcohol that shows, fig and raisin mostly, apple marmelade, hints of chocolate and coffee, med to long finish, could have used more concentration in the palate. Very good quality, drink now but I'm guessing it can hold

2006 vintage

Tawny color. Prunes, raisins, and raspberry. Not that sweet nor overwhelmingly alcoholic, this had delightfully fresh, syrupy red fruit that was as good an accompaniment to chocolate as billed.

I was surprised on the last glass to find this holding its own with a Malmsey of equivalent (15 years') age. Different but no less interesting, and if memory serves, a good bit cheaper.

Dry run for my sister's visit -- little chocolate soufflés with raspberries and whipped cream. Experimenting with different recipes. This wine was great with the dish, I felt it was a better match than the tawny port we also deployed -- the tawny burned our noses. A vintage port might be a little more compelling (i.e. one where the brandy had properly 'married' to the grapes) but the Maury was just right out of the bottle. As good a match …

Good slightly porty, slightly pruney nose. paired with chocolate - not quite sweet enough to work. Good rancio finish. Lovely drink in its own right.

At a tasting at K&L Wines. Quick notes: dark honey colored, thick, sweet, syrupy nose with a good oily mouthfeel on the palate with pronounced smoked raisins and licorice with a dry, sweet finish. Good.
