10 years, most of it in our cellar, for a modest wine usually tagged for early drinking. Should be dead? But this was a 2003, so who knows. It was excellent as it happens, a passable imitation of a lightweight Burgundy with some age on it.

The lighter style of Bourgueil from vines grown on the gravels. Splendid example of an appetising Loire Cab Franc from a hot vintage. Good colour, surprisingly assertive cedary nose. Palate of ripe red berries and chocolate, both lifted by good acidity. Medium bodied, arguably at its peak. This might age interestingly, but when it drinks so well at this stage why hold? We will apply ourselves to drinking up our stock over the next 12 months. Deserves its Guide Hachette …
