did I reread my last note from 9 months ago saying this was better with time open? no: so I opened and started this quickly, which was a mistake. On opening, it's quite weedy not much depth. 6 hours later it's delicious. Didn't get a candied note I had last time, and it really did pull itself together with red fruits and spiciness and length.

Rich red and black fruit, vanilla, oak spice, lavender, roasted coffee and a slight resinous character. Still quite big and oaky, but the fruit to back it up. Enjoyable now, but could benefit from a few more years in the cellar.

Burg Villages Dinner at Jia He Grand. Tasted blind. Drank in Grassl Cru. Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of dark red cherries, dark toast oak, dark spices, earth with some roasted coffee. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), structured medium+ tannins, medium+ almost full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sleek dark red cherries, roasted coffee and earth, dark spices. Long finish. Very good quality. …

PnP. Extremely young and tight. Very dark and brooding. Screams syrah more than Burg at this point.

Clarijs Fine Wine Selections Tasting and Lunch (Restaurant De Kas *, Amsterdam, NL) : Trade tasting, brief note. Spicy depth, black fruit, rich and ripe, fresh and minerally, has good weight and a masculine terroir expression. Not marker by the heat. Very fine.

Very young but gorgeous red and darker fruit on the palate, some extraction but nice balance and freshness still, the fruit is very present and energetic, nice depth and silky and rich texture, but nothing too much. Beau fruit rouge et noir, texture enveloppante avec de lextraction mais sans excs, belle fracheur tout de mme.

pours a dark crimson, on the nose the oak comes first, toasty, with some cherry. On the palate, the tannins are fine grained and integrated, more secondary savoury flavours, tobacco leaves, fine acidity, balance. Good finish.

Slightly disjointed on opening, with a prominent candied note. Given time (eventually overnight) it pulled itself together, and while slightly on the sweet side, drank very well on day 2. Definitely open in good time ahead of drinking.

2020 Domaine Denis Mortet, Mes Cinq Terroire: I love this wine. Garnet red color, lots of red fruit on the nose, cherry, violet, lots of red fruit on the palate with a nice spicy note, pink pepper and very finely integrated tannins. Very long finish. (94/100 - 18/20)

Third time with this wine, I like it less each time I taste it, nose is odd more vegetal than cherry, thin in the mouth, dies mid palate, not much finish, sadly have 3 bottles left

A cornucopia of black and red currants, juniper, pine resin, wet earth and a hint of animalistic notes. Ripe, yet pure and fresh, very true to its roots. Slightly short on the finish but very promising.

Garnet color - delicate but intense nose of crushed fruit, perfumed - with a hint of spice. On taste - young fresh fruit expands delicately on your palate, fine tannins with a spice finish on the back end. Long finish. The body is light and expansive - not your typical Burgundy. Very elegant and alluring. As you taste over time you appreciate the delicate fruit underlying the wine. Very nice. At this point it is very primary and fruit driven.

PnP Highly aromatic; bright red nose, floral tones, spice and a dollop of wood. Rich body with some effervescence and an evolving structure that carries punch. Long finish; quite good. Really like the style

Initial coravin pour was thin, bitter, and medicinal. Two months later with a short decant -- Cherry and fall spice on the nose, with medium-light body, medium acid, light tannins, and a lovely juicy palate featuring sappy red cherries.

Beautiful nose but needed a little time before finally opening on the palate. Good concentration and dark berries. Clearly stems used. Very good and punches above its village designation

See my note on the 2019. 2020 more fruit-concentrated, and slightly more tannic.

Good floral aromatics draw you in on pouring. Clean display of red berries with spices and oak integration on the palate with a silky finish. There's enough tertiary characters hidden throughout to keep things interesting. This would've been a fantastic house red in a previous era. Easy to drink, yet still has enough to keep subsequent glasses fun.

Oops! Wrong decision perhaps, to open this. Dark purplish, this nosed of wood, wood & more wood, plus wood-spice. No resemblance of a Burg on the palate; I’d have guessed a GSM (w/o the tannins) or something, if blinded... Decided to save 3/4 of the btl for the 2nd-day, hoping it will come together. Nope, this was just as closed & impenetrable as the day before. Hrmm, maybe another 5-yrs???

Ouch! Oak, oak and then some chocolate. I usually love the older wines of Denis Motet but boy, this reminds me of a Carmenere from Chile or a Malbec from Mendoza. Will it ever become balanced Burgundy? Write me a note should it happen... 84-?

Annual Roi Chambertin tasting: 2016 Gevreys from village to grand cru (Espace Chambertin, Bourgogne) : Sweet entry, and even just somewhat drying on the finish. But far better than the Thierry Mortets and the mid palate sap appeals. Let's just see how it integrates with time in bottle.
